2 Notes Before You Begin - Read through all of the instructions before beginning. - All of the seam allowances are 1/4 unless otherwise noted. - Press seam allowances open unless otherwise noted. - Width of fabric (WOF) is equal to at least 40 wide. - Right sides together has been abbreviated to RST. - Remember to measure twice and cut once! Tips - Always lay borders fl at and pin together, to avoid stretching. - Use a slightly smaller stitch length and press seams to one side when strip piecing. From Fabric A: trim the panel to 23-1/2 x 42-1/2 Cutting and Assembly Instructions Border 1: From Fabric B, cut: four 3-1/2 x WOF strips. Subcut: two 3-1/2 x 42-1/2 side borders two 3-1/2 x 29-1/2 top/bottom borders Sew the side borders to the center panel. Press toward the border. Sew the top and bottom borders to the center panel. Press toward the border. Border 2: From each of Fabrics C and D, cut: two 2-1/2 x WOF strips. Sew all four strips together into a strip set (Fabric C/Fabric D/Fabric C/Fabric D). Sub cut the strip set into twelve 2 units. Sew six units together along the short sides to make a side border. Repeat to make a second side border. Sew one border to each of the two sides of the quilt center. page 3

4 Border 3: (Twenty Irish Chain and four Star Blocks): Create the Center 4-patch units for all twenty-four blocks From each of Fabrics E and F, cut: two 1-1/2 x WOF strips. Sew into two strips sets (Fabric E/Fabric F) and press seam allowance toward Fabric E. Sub cut the strip set into forty-eight 1-1/2 units. Sew the units together in pairs to make twenty-four 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 center 2-patch units. Twenty are for the Irish chain blocks and four are for the Star Blocks. Irish Chain Blocks (make twenty): From Fabric G, cut: two 2-1/2 x WOF strips. Subcut: forty 1-1/2 x 2-1/2 rectangles. Make two piles: twenty rectangles with few dots and twenty rectangles with lots of dots. Set aside From Fabric H, cut: two 2-1/2 x WOF strips From each of Fabrics E and F, cut: two 1-1/2 x WOF strips. Together with Fabric H strips cut above, sew into two strip sets (Fabric E/Fabric H/Fabric F),press seams toward Fabric H and cut into forty 1-1/2 units. Set aside. HSTs for Irish Chain Blocks: From Fabric H, cut: three 3 x WOF strips. Subcut thirty-two 3 x 3 squares. From Fabric I, cut: two 3 x WOF strips. Subcut sixteen 3 x 3 squares. From Fabric J, cut: two 3 x WOF strips. Subcut sixteen 3 x 3 squares. Pair each Fabric I and J square with a Fabric H square. Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of one fabric in the pair. Sew 1/4 away on both sides of the marked line. Cut on the marked line to create two half-square triangle (HST) blocks. Press the seam to one side and trim to 2-1/2 x 2-1/2. Repeat to make sixteen H/I HSTs and sixteen H/J HSTs. page 4

5 Sew into sixteen sets of two, half with Fabric I on the left and half with Fabric J on the left, noting the orientation in the illustration. Press the seam open. Set aside. From Fabric H, cut: one 2-1/2 x WOF strip. Sub cut: eight 2-1/2 x 4-1/2 rectangles. Set aside. Outer 4-patch units for Irish Chain Blocks: From Fabric F, cut: four 1-1/2 x WOF strips From Fabric E, cut: fi ve 1-1/2 x WOF strips From Fabric G, cut: four 1-1/2 x WOF strips From Fabric H, cut: fi ve 1-1/2 x WOF strips Sew into pairs in strips sets: two of Fabric F/Fabric H two of Fabric F/Fabric G two of Fabric E/Fabric G three of Fabric E/Fabric H Sub cut each strip set into 1-1/2 units. page 5

6 You will need: forty Fabric F/H seventy-two Fabric E/H twenty Fabric F/G (with few dots) twenty Fabric F/G (lots of dots) twenty Fabric E/G (with few dots) twenty Fabric E/G (lots of dots) Sew the units together in pairs to make 4-patch units according to the diagram. Set the sixteen E/H units aside for the Star Blocks. From Fabric G, cut: three 4-1/2 x WOF strips. Sub cut: forty 2-1/2 x 4-1/2 rectangles. Make two piles: twenty rectangles with few dots and twenty rectangles with lots of dots. Sew the 4-patch units from above to either short side of the rectangles, according to the diagram and noting the orientation of the 4-patch units. Make ten of each. page 6

7 Assemble the twenty Irish Chain Blocks according to the diagram. Note the orientation and placement of the fabrics, as each block type has subtle differences. Tip: Stack fabrics by block type prior to sewing, to ensure that all units are with the correct block type. Star Blocks (make four): From Fabric E, cut: two 1-1/2 x WOF strips From Fabric H, cut: one 2-1/2 x WOF strip Sew the Fabric E strips to either long side of the Fabric H strip to make a strip set. Cut into eight 1-1/2 units. From Fabric H, cut: one 2-1/2 x WOF strip. Subcut: eight rectangles 1-1/2 x 2-1/2. Set aside. Flying Geese for Star Blocks (make sixteen): From Fabric H, cut: one 4-1/2 x WOF strip. Subcut: sixteen rectangles 2-1/2 x 4-1/2 From Fabric D, cut: two 2-1/2 x WOF strips. Subcut: thirty-two squares 2-1/2 x 4-1/2. Mark a diagonal line on the back side of each square. page 7

8 Gather one Fabric H rectangle and two Fabric D squares. Place one square RST at one end of the rectangle. Sew on the marked line, then trim excess fabric away, leaving a 1/4 seam allowance. Press toward the triangle. Repeat at the other side of the rectangle, creating a flying geese block. Repeat to make sixteen flying geese. Assemble the star blocks as illustrated. Press seams away from the flying geese blocks. Repeat to make four star blocks. Assemble two side borders, following the Quilt Assembly Diagram, using six Irish Chain blocks each and noting the placement of the lots of dots and few dots fabrics. Sew one border page 8

9 to each side of the quilt center. Assemble top and bottom borders, following the Quilt Assembly Diagram, using four Irish Chain Blocks and two Star Blocks each and noting the placement of the lots of dots and few dots fabrics. Sew one border to the top and bottom of the quilt center. Border 4: From Fabric K, cut: six 2-1/2 x WOF strips From Fabric L, cut: twelve 1-1/2 x WOF strips four squares 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 (for the corner blocks) Sew a 1-1/2 Fabric L strip to either side of a 2-1/2 Fabric K strip. Piece the units together, end-to-end, to make border strips, trimming to yield: two 4-1/2 x 48-1/2 two 4-1/2 x 64-1/2 Sew the 64-1/2 border strips to the sides of the quilt. Sew the corner blocks to the short ends of the top and bottom border and sew the borders to the quilt center. Border 5: From Fabric M, cut: four squares 5-1/2 x 5-1/2 From each of Fabrics F, D, J and N-R, cut: fi ve 1-1/2 x WOF strips Sew into strips sets (using the following fabric order: N-O-P-F-Q-J-R-D). Make fi ve strip sets. Sub cut each strip set into 5-1/2 units to yield seven 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 blocks per strip set. Tip: True up (square) the edge every couple of cuts, so you maintain a straight 90º block. Sew strip set blocks together along the short sides to make borders: seven blocks each for the top and bottom, nine blocks each for the sides. Sew Fabric L corner blocks to the ends of the top and bottom borders. Sew the side borders to the quilt top, pressing toward the quilt center. Sew the top and bottom borders to the quilt top, pressing toward the quilt center. page 9

10 Tip: when sewing this border on, you may need to ease it in our stretch it a bit to fit, because of variations in seam allowances. If you find your seam allowances varied too much and the border is too long or too short, you may add or subtract 1-1/2 strips to make it fit.
