Every day skirts 7 different skirts Optional pockets Eu size (US 12mo-14y) This pattern is copyrighted, with all rights reserved. You may print copies of the PDF for your own use. You may not make duplicate copies of either the printed pattern, or the PDF file to share. You are not allowed to sell, trade, or share this pattern in any form. Small home based business are allowed to sell finished items made from this pattern.
Before you start: Read all instructions before starting project. Seam allowance is NOT included, add that where two pieces are sewn together. Do not add allowance where you re going to add binding. I usually have a seam allowance of 0.6 cm since I use a serger with a seam that is 0.5cm wide. If you wish to hem add seam allowance for that to the skirt. A stretchy knit fabric is suitable for the skirt. Pre-wash all fabrics before sewing to avoid color bleeding and shrinking. Measure the test square on the first page to make sure you printed correctly. It should measure exactly 4x4 cm (or 2x2 ) Make sure you are using the most up to date version of Adobe Reader. You will need: Sewing machine Scissors Thread Ballpoint needle (in machine) Wonder clips or pins Fabric Measuring tape Optional: Eyelets(for waistband) String (for waist band) Fabric requirements: The pattern does not include seam allowance. The table shows the total fabric requirement in cm if your fabric has atleast 150cm of width. You may also need fabric for pockets, waistband and ruffle. 2
It is possible to print only certain sizes using the layers function in acrobat. Select the Layers tab. Unselect the sizes you do not want to print, leave the last layer selected and the size you wish to sew. When printing make sure your printer settings are set to Actual size and Auto portrait/landscape. The files can be printed on Letter and A4 Tape the pattern together as shown to the right. Tip: Cut off the top and left edge of each pattern piece. Line up each line so the triangles meet and form a diamond. Do not cut out pattern pieces before taping all of the pages together. 3
More photos of finished dresses and more of my designs are posted regularly on: (please tag #madebyruni when you post photos of your creations) Facebook: All my patterns are available for purchase at several of them are also available as physical prints for those who prefere that. 5 Casual Skirt Cut out all pieces 1 front and 1 back on the fold Waistband Optional 2 pockets(mirrored) Binding for pocket openings and skirt hem If you instead wish to hem the skirt, add 2 cm extra seamallowance to the bottom of the skirt for hem. Pocket opening (skip to side seam if not adding pockets) Add binding to pocket openings For manual binding instructions see pages Pocket opening and pocket can be done in reverse, see note under pocket to why adding pockets first. Pockets Place your pocket pieces right side to wrong side of the skirt and use some temporary glue to keep in place. I use clips at the edges but glue where I can not use the clips. The reason to switch the order of pocket at pocket opening, as in my case the binding is pulling the fabric a bit, so it made it harder for me to get the pocket to lay flat before I sew it in placce. Sew pocket in place With a decorative or stretch seam sew the pocket in place. It is easier to sew from the wrong side since you can follow the pocket edge alot easier. I use a narrow zig zag. 5
Casual Skirt Side seam Place front and back piece right sides together and sew one side seam. Skirt edge There are several ways to finish the skirt edge. On this skirt I added edge bindingwhich is easier to do with only 1 side seam sewn. Other options are a normal hem, lace or a band. If you want to hem tdo not forget to add as much as you later fold up and sew down for the hem. I usually add 2cm. Sew other side seam Right sides together sew the other side seam. Prepare the waistband. Fold it in half right sides together and sew the short ends together. Fold it wrong sides together length wise, seam matching up. Make a mark for center front (back is markedwith the seam) Waistband Mark center front and back on the skirt, attach the waistband right sides together with the skirt, aligning the center back and front. Then find the center points on each side, pin in place. I also make sure to pin the pocket and bindings so they don t slip out of place when I sew. Sew the waistband in place, and you are done! 6
Casual Skirt with ruffle Cut out all pieces 1 front and 1 back on the fold (Remove as much as you add with the ruffle minus the hem.) Waistband, Ruffle x2 Optional 2+2 pockets (mirrored) Pocket with opening+full pocket Add 2 cm extra to the ruffle that you later use to hem. Pocket pouch Put the two pocket pieces right sides together, sew the curved edge. This can be done after the next step if you find it easier. Sew pocket opening to skirt With the pocket opening right sides together with the skirts pocket opening sew in place. Make sure not to get the other pocket piece caught in the seam. Pockets done. This is what the pockets look like sewn on from the wrong side. 7
Casual Skirt with ruffle Pockets from the right side As you can see here, the pockets should be longer then the skirt at this point. Time to fix the ruffles. Ruffle If you chose to hem, fold the 2cm up and sew, using a stretch stich or decorative stitch. I prefer to overlock the edge before I hem. Repeat for both ruffle pieces. Change to a straight stitch with longest stitch length. Do not backstitch, sew along the long raw edge about 1/8 from the edge. Leave a long thread in the beginning and the end. Attach ruffle Pull the bobbin thread carefully to gather the ruffle. Arrange the gathers evenly along the ruffle and gather until the ruffle is the same width as the skirt edge. Pin the ruffle right sides together with the skirt and sew in place. Repeat for the other ruffle and skirt piece. Front piece with ruffle Now both front and back piece should have ruffles attached. 8
Casual Skirt with ruffle Side seam Put front and back piece right sides together and sew the side seams together. Top edge of pocket Before we attach the waistband, pin or glue the top part of the pocket so it stays in place. Waistband Fold waistband right sides together, short ends meeting up and sew. Then fold lengthwise, wrong sides together, seams meeting up. It is easier to mark both band and skirt in quarter marks, I do this by first marking center back and front, then aligning them and marking the sides. Then pin those points together (right sides together) stretch the band to fit then sew in place. Done After this skirt was sewn the pockets were changed a little, but you still sew it the same way :) 9
Circle-, half circle- and high-low skirt Cut out all pieces 1 front and 1 back on the fold Waistband Optional 4 pockets (mirrored) Rolled hem or lace is recommended on these for best twirl. If you instead wish to hem the skirt, add 2 cm extra seam allowance to the bottom of the skirt for hem. Front The skirt piece on the photo is Circle skirt - Front. If you want a ordinary circle skirt cut this piece on the fold x2. High-Low If you want the High-low option cut 1 front piece and 1 back piece (se photo) on the fold. Pockets If you want pockets put the pockets top point at the marking shown on the pattern, right sides together on each side of the skirt pieces. 10
Circle-, half circle- and high-low skirt Pocket view All pocket pieces pinned to their skirt sides. Sew in place Sew each pocket in place, still right sides together. On the photo I have just folded one out to show what it loks like sewn together Sew side seam With right sides together, pin the side seam together, following the pocket pouch as photo shows. Sew in place. Go slow around the pocket, it can be a little bit tricky along the bottom of the pocket, you need to straighten it out, without stretching the fabric to much. If adding lace to the hem, do that before sewing the second side seam. Side seams done Skirt so far from the wrong side. 11
Circle-, half circle- and high-low skirt Waistband Fold waistband right sides together, short ends meeting up and sew. Then fold lengthwise, wrong sides together, seams meeting up. If you are using the same fabric as the skirt, do add some extra to the waistband since the measurements are for using ribbed fabric. Attach waistband It is easier to mark both band and skirt in quarter marks, I do this by first marking center back and front, then aligning them and marking the sides. Then pin those points together (right sides together) stretch the band to fit then sew in place. Finish skirt edge Now to finish the skirt edge. As I mentioned before I prefer lace or rolled hem for the best twirl. I choose a rolled hem. I use my overlock for this and just follow my instructions in the manual how to do a rolled hem. Done! Finally done and ready for twirling :) 12
Binding Classic edge binding. Start with measuring the pocket opening, hem or armhole depending on what you plan to attach binding to. Do some math. Mine measures 14cm (5.5 ) Take your measurement and multiply with 0.8 (or 0.75 if it is a very stretchy fabric) For me I get 14*0.75=10.5cm (size 92/2t) So I cut 2 pieces that are 10.5*4 (length*height) since I am binding pocket openings. Pin and sew. With right sides together, pin the edges together first then stretch the band to fit and pin where needed. Sew together. Fold over. This will create a rather thin band, I will show a different way I do when I want a wider band on the next page. Pin in place and sew using a stretch stitch. I like to use a ordinary small zig zag. 13
Binding Clean up. Cut of the excess fabric (or next time remember to cut about 3 cm instead for this one). Check out your awesome handy work and move on to sewing the pockets or side seams. For a wider band. Before I fold over I just use a straight stitch at the width I want the finished band to be. Fold over. The result is this after folding over. Sew using a stretch or decorative stitch as before. Finished! 14
Eyelets Squares for eyelets (Images from a different pattern) This is just a personal preference, for decorative purposes. I usually cut my squares 4-5cm. To get them perfectly square I use a ruler and rotary cutter and cut out both at the same time to get them the exact same size. Measure out placement I usually place them 3cm appart, for the waistband fold it in half and place them in the middle of the band (mark out center front). Go with what you think looks best, just make sure they are even. Just iron in place or use some glue to keep it in place. Place squares Place the squares on the right side and glue in place.if you do not want the squares, just mark out where to place the eyelets and skip the next 2 steps. Sew squares I use a straight stitch with 3.5 stitch length. I sew around the square then diagonally through the middle to make a X. 15
Eyelets Squares done Something like this. Cut hole for eyelet Fold square down the middle, then fold again so you get a little point. Carefully cut away a little on the top of the point. If you cut the hole to big the eylet will fall out! Done with hole You dont need a bigger hole than this. Woven fabric as stabilizer You need a stabilizer on the wrong side, a piece of woven fabric works well if you do not have any stabilizer. Cut a little hole in the same manner as with the squares. Put the fabric on the wrong sidethen place the eyelets. This will prevent the eyelets from creeping out because you have a stretchy fabric. 16
Eyelets Done When you buy eyelets there are usually instructions on the package on how to put them on. I prefer 5mm eylets the best, but many use 8mm. When eyelets are done add the string and then attach the waistband to the skirt. Katy Rose made this gorgeous skirt with pockets on the outside. Cut out a full front skirt (no pocket openings) Cut out 2 mirrored pockets with pocket opening. Add binding to the pocket opening, then just sew the pocket to the right side of the skirt. 17
