Featuring the Fabric Collection: Climbing Jacob's Ladder by Barbara Brackman "In 1935, quilt collector Carrie Hall recorded the name Catch Me If You Can for an old block, that has many other names including Winding Blades, Devil s Puzzle, and Flyfoot. This pattern can remind us of the Underground Railroad when escaping slaves ran to freedom. Although the block s name is a twentieth century invention, the lively image seems to capture the cleverness such a journey required." Barbara Brackman

4 CONSTRUCTION CONT. Block 1 Block 3 Block 2 Block 1 The quilt consists of four large blocks with spinning blades. Rotate large block at left ¼ turn as you assemble quilt. In EACH block there are 3 different print combinations. (2 of one combination) Four blades in total. The blade tips extend into the center and outer sashing. Center Sashing Blocks 7. Using easy corner triangles sew one 3½"x 3½" blue print and one 3½" x 3½" yellow print to the 3½" x 6½" brown print. Note the fabric placement. 8. Using easy corner triangles sew one 3½" x 3½" blue print and one 3 ½" x 3½" brown print to the 3½" x 6½" yellow. Note the fabric placement. Block 3 making easy corner triangles: Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the square. Sew on the diagonal line. Cut the square ¼" away from the diagonal seam. Press towards to the corner to form the triangle. Refer to diagram above and assemble 4 large blocks. Blocks should measure 18½"x 18½" Block should measure 1. 6 ASSEMBLE QUILT TOP Refer to diagram below and layout various quilt units before assembling quilt. Be sure to match blade tip in the side and center sashing with the "blades" in large block. Sew blocks into Rows 1-5 and then join rows to complete quilt top. Quilt top should measure 48½"x 48½" before borders. BORDERS Each time you add a side border, measure the center of the quilt for the length of the border Each time you add a top or bottom border, measure the center of the quilt for the length of the border. Inner Border Add the 1½" inner borders. Add the side borders then the top and bottom. Final Border Add the 8½" print final borders. Miter the corners. FINISHING Quilt as desired and bind. Let Freedom Ring. Navy Stars Cut 1 strip 4¼" x WOF. Cut the strip into 2 squares 4¼" x 4¼" and 1 square 3½" x 3½".
