2 Homemaking has been part of the Guiding programme since the beginning, with Cook badge dating from among the earliest Guide badges. Lots of things have changed over the past century and new technology has led to time-saving appliances that take the hard work out of many domestic chores. But homemaking skills will never go out of fashion and this challenge encourages members to have a go at some of the skills needed to run a house. Guiding is sometimes the only place where today s girls have the opportunity to learn homemaking skills and they can have great fun trying out such things as baking, planting bulbs and sewing on buttons while at the same time learning life skills to stand them in good stead for fending for themselves and setting up home when it comes to college, university and beyond. The challenge consists of six zones, each based on a different badge or combination of badges from the last hundred years: Cook/Confectioner, Hostess, Knitter/Needlewoman, Laundress, Homemaker/Handywoman and Gardener/Flower Arranger. Each zone has a variety of activities making it suitable for all sections from Rainbows through to Trefoil Guild and ideas can be adapted if necessary to suit all units. Most, if not all, of the activities can be done in the meeting place or could form the basis of an indoor holiday. The inspiration for the badge design is the Little House Emblem, which in previous Guide programmes was awarded to Guides gaining a selection of domestic interest badges. To earn your 100 Years of Homemaking badge, complete a challenge from each of the six zones then send off the badge order form on the back page. Badges cost 1 each plus postage and packaging. We hope you enjoy! 14 th Woodford Brownies London Over the Border, LaSER This challenge was originally produced in 2010, the Guide centenary year, and has been reissued due to popular demand. Proceeds of this challenge will go to support the recently re-opened 14 th Woodford Brownie unit.

Try your hand at adjusting some garments, e.g. taking up the bottom of a skirt or pair of trousers, and re-hemming them. Learn some embroidery stitches previously unknown to you, and use this to make/decorate an item (e.g. bookmark or purse.) Here are some stitch ideas to get you started: Chain stitch Stem stitch Cross stitch Lazy Daisy stitch French Knot Make a toy using some knitting/needlework skills. This could be a sock puppet, a felt toy, or even a knitted teddy. Learn to sew badges onto a garment or blanket. Use these methods to clean floors or windows.

How about using the GirlGuiding centenary colours to create a special themed arrangement? Or you could create a gift for someone special on Mother s Day? Decorate a flowerpot and then plant a bulb in the pot. You could use some of the following: Paint Foam shapes Tissue paper Stencils/sponges Make a bird feeder/fat ball. Grow some cress. You could grow it in the form of a cress head or a cress creature! Plant a window box or a hanging basket. Decide on a colour theme and find flowers that fit the theme.
