1 LittleOwlsHut Crochet Pattern By Chirkova Tatiana Skill level: Experienced About this pattern Please, read the whole pattern carefully before you start. I ve tried to do my best to present you with accurate pictures of how to crochet and decorate the dog. Due to the presence of small parts and wire the dog is not suitable as a toy for little children. I really hope that detailed stepby-step instructions and pictures will help you to gain experience and provide you with satisfaction from creative work. Everybody works differently. This pattern is just a guideline to help you make your own unique doggie. It is up to you to decide the way your toy will look like! I use USA terminology for my pattern (don t worry if you use UK terms, all the differences are explained in the pattern). Finished size 16 cm (6.3 inches) tall using the materials stated in the pattern. Materials Chinese crested dog Main and contrasting color yarn I used 25 g of Angora Special by Alize (550m/100g, 70% mohair, 30% acrylic). You can order yarn here: Steel crochet hook. I used 1.5 mm crochet hook for the yarn mentioned above, 1.25 mm and 1.0 mm crochet hooks to attach to wool for felting. Stuffing. Fabric tape 1 cm wide to work up the wire (the one you use to cover wounds). Single core copper electrical wire for the main parts approximately 100 cm (approximately 40 inches) long 1.5 mm in diameter. Use only copper wire for the frame as copper can better stand bending compared to aluminum. You can buy it at electric supplies stores. Thin copper PVC electrical wire for the ears approx. 15 cm (5.9 inches) long. You can find this type of wire wound together inside a cable. You need one of those thin wires (not the whole cable). You can buy it at electric supplies stores. Wire for making jewelry can also be used.

2 LittleOwlsHut Crochet Pattern 2016 Sewing and tapestry needles. Strong thread for needle sculpting (matching the color of the main yarn). Two black beads or half beads for the eyes I used 6-7 mm in diameter. Any thin strong smooth black thread to sew the beads. Wool for felting. Ready-made nose. You can make the nose using polymer clay as well (instructions are given in the pattern). Comb to brush out extra wool for felting. For nose made of polymer clay: Black polymer clay. Varnish. 2

3 LittleOwlsHut Crochet Pattern 2016 Marker The toy is crocheted in continuous spirals (unless otherwise stated in the pattern) so you ll need a stitch marker to keep track of where the beginning of each round starts. If you don't have a stitch marker you can always use a scrap of contrasting yarn instead. You can see it in my photos. Put it between the first and the last sts of the rnd leaving the short tail in front of you and the main part behind the work. Work the next rnd to the marked place and put its main part in front of the work. This simple way of putting the thread in front of and behind the work after each rnd will let you know where the beginning of your rnd is. After you finish, it is easy to pull the thread out. It is the quickest and the easiest way to mark rounds. Tip (make it right) If there are no special notes, the toy is crocheted under both parts of the loop. In some rows, there are special notes: into the front loop only or into the back loop only. In that case, you need to follow these instructions. Tip (make it right) When making toys the right side looks like this: And the backside looks like this: Abbreviations ch(s) = chain(s) st(s) = stitch(es) sc = single crochet inc(s) = increasing(s) (2 sc in 1 st) dec(s) = decreasing(s) (2 sc together) sc3tog = 3 sc together sl st = slip stitch hdc = half double crochet hdc inc = 2 hdc in one st dc = double crochet rnd = round bs = bobble stitch (Refer to Bobble stitch section for the detailed explanation). picot st = picot stitch (ch 2, insert your hook in the 2 nd chain from the hook, yarn over and and draw the yarn through the stitch and through the loop on the hook) If there is a record in the brackets in the pattern, multiplied by some number, for example (3 sc, 1 inc) x 3, it means you need to repeat this action 3 times, that is 3 sc, 1 inc, 3 sc, 1 inc, 3 sc, 1 inc. Minimal shaping. Projects using yarn with basic stitches, repetitive stitch patterns, simple color changes, and simple shaping and finishing. Projects using a variety of techniques, such as basic lace patterns or color patterns, mid-level shaping and finishing. Projects with intricate stitch patterns, techniques and dimension, such as non-repeating patterns, multicolor techniques, fine threads, small hooks, detailed shaping and refined finishing.

4 LittleOwlsHut Crochet Pattern 2016 Bobble stitch 1. Make 4 unfinished dc in one st (total 5 loops on hook). 2. Grab the color B yarn, leaving a tail, and pull up a loop with the color B through both loops on the hook. 3. Work 3 stitches, inserting the hook in the loop and then under both the color A yarn and the tail you have left when you attached the color B. 2. Yarn over and pull yarn through all loops on the hook. 1 bobble stitch (bs) is ready. 4. Cut the color A yarn and continue working with the color B yarn. Changing colors (A main color, B new color) 1. Leave the last stitch unfinished. You save yarn working this way, get a nice right side as all tails remain at the back side. Your work is not tightened and deformed. 4

5 LittleOwlsHut Crochet Pattern 2016 Find the right position for the pattern on the piece you need to crochet along. Shift stitch As work tends to twist to the right you need to adjust position of the marker periodically. Sometimes you will have to work one extra stitch at the end of round and move the round marker behind the last worked st. This is a shift stitch. It will be mentioned in the pattern and will not be counted. If you use other yarn than mentioned in the Materials and tools section, you may need to work more or less shift sts. In this case try to follow my stitch marker in the picture making shift st(s) or unravelling a stitch or more at the end of the round if needed. If you follow the gauge mentioned in the Gauge section (page 3), you will not need to work any shift sts other than mentioned in the pattern. 2. Insert your hook at any point you like (unless otherwise stated) under the post between the stitches or rounds/rows. Chain 1 and work a sc into the same point (the tail of yarn should be on the wrong side of the piece otherwise secure the tail of yarn and weave in loose ends) Work the next sc into the next post between the sts, etc. How to crochet along the finished piece using a pattern We often need to crochet using the stitches of the finished piece. But it is hard sometimes to make it look neat. 1. Cut out a pattern of the size and shape needed out of a piece of paper (or crochet it instead). 5

6 LittleOwlsHut Crochet Pattern 2016 Adding wool for felting There are three ways to add wool for felting to your work. You can use all three or just choose one. Method 1a and 1b: The wool is added from the right side of the work the way you fasten fringe. 3. If you do not miss the posts, you will end up with a neat row/round at the end. 1a: thin pieces of wool are folded in half and secured to the unworked front loops. 1b: thin pieces of wool are folded in half and secured to the running threads between the rows/rounds and the sts. 6

7 LittleOwlsHut Crochet Pattern 2016 Method 2 The wool is added from the right side of the piece without any knots between the stitches. 1. Insert the hook behind a running thread between the sts and rows/rounds. 5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 to end. Finish with method 1b. Pull up all pieces of wool to hide all stitches. 2. Fold the piece of wool in half. Pull the looped end through. Remove the hook. Method 3 (a, b) The wool is crocheted into the fabric. 3a the wool is on the right side of the piece. 1. Crochet until you reach the st needed. Insert the hook into the next st. Take a piece of wool and put it with its center being above the st you are going to work (see picture). 3. Insert the hook into the next running thread and the pulled-through loop of wool. 2. Yarn over and pull your working yarn together with the center of the wool piece through the st. Bring the left tail of wool to the right side of your work. 4. Fold another piece of wool in half and pull the looped end through all loops on the hook Complete the sc with your working yarn.

8 LittleOwlsHut Crochet Pattern Repeat the steps above to end. 3. Complete the sc with your working yarn. 3b the wool is on the wrong side of the piece 1. Crochet until you reach the st needed. Insert the hook into the next st. Take a piece of wool and put it with its center being above the st you are going to work (see picture). 4. Repeat the steps above to end. 2. Yarn over and pull your working yarn together with the center of the wool piece through the st. Bring the left tail of wool to the wrong side of your work. Tip: You can needle felt the wool pieces at the places needed instead of using any of the method above (instructions are not given). The result may look more natural and possible knots resulting from attaching wool pieces will be less or not visible. 8

It is the middle of the muzzle s bottom part. Try not to distort it and not to stretch it lengthwise while stuffing. Hold it in your palm while stuffing. Don t forget about the bridge of the nose. Rnd 21: 5 sc, 1 dec, 18 sc, 1 dec, 5 sc, 1 dec (31) Rnd 22: 1 sc in each st around (31) Rnd 23: 3 sc, 1 dec, 22 sc, 1 dec, 2 sc (29) Rnd 24: 3 sc, 1 dec, 10 sc, 1 sc (mark it as the center of the head s top part), 10 sc, 1 dec, 1 sc (27) Start to stuff the head. Keep in mind that you will need to needle sculpt it later so the head should be stuffed firmly but not overstuffed. If you don t stuff enough though, you will end up with a small flattened ball instead of a nice head. Rnd 25: 25 sc, 1 dec (26) Rnd 26: 1 sc, 1 dec, 19 sc, 1 dec, 2 sc (24) Rnd 27: (1 sc, 1 dec) х 8 (16) Finish stuffing the head shaping it nicely. Rnd 28: 8 dec End with a sl st and fasten off, leaving a tail to close up the opening. Do not close up the opening now. You can remove the round marker. Note: Try to shape the head correctly. The straight lines of the muzzle s top part and the forehead should be parallel. The back bottom part of the head should be cut off. Try to keep this shape to the end of your work.
