1 LittleOwlsHut Knitting Pattern By Svetlana Zabelina Skill level: Easy Hen and Rooster Abbreviations K knit P - purl KFB knit the front and back of a stitch (a way to make an increase) K2tog knit two sts together (a way to make a decrease) K7tog knit seven sts together st st stocking stitch (K on the one side and P on the other side) Rnd round (N sts) number of sts in a row/round ( ) x N repeat instructions in brackets N times st stitch edge st - edge stitch yo yarn over tbl - through back of loop Materials and Tools You will need: ü Yarn any yarn that has about m per 100 g skein - beige color 30g - brown color 16 g - yellow and orange 14 g of each color - white 10 g - red 3 g - small amount of green and blue color ü Small piece of red satin ribbon ü A white button or white half bead to decorate the chicken ü 4 black beads for the eyes (I used 8 mm in diameter) ü Transparent glue ü Stuffing ü A pair of 2.5 mm knitting needles ü A piece of cardboard Finished size Hen - approx. 17 cm/6.7 inches Rooster approx. 18 cm/7 inches Happy knitting!

2 LittleOwlsHut Knitting pattern 2015 Tip (yarn) If you use different yarn, project will be bigger or smaller and you will need more or less yarn than stated in the pattern (i.e. thicker yarn will produce a larger project and you may require more yarn). Minimal shaping. Projects using yarn with basic stitches, repetitive stitch patterns, simple color changes, and simple shaping and finishing. Projects using a variety of techniques, color patterns, mid-level shaping and finishing. Projects with intricate stitch patterns, techniques and dimension, such as non-repeating patterns, multi-color techniques, fine threads, small needles, detailed shaping and refined finishing. 2

Ladies who tested this pattern would love to answer your questions. Note: You don t need to add edge sts. They are already included in the pattern. I recommend that you don t slip but work the first st. It will make the row edges more elastic and the seam neater when assembling the toy. ROOSTER Tail (make 5 pieces of different colors yellow, red, blue, green and orange) Cast on 40 sts with the color needed. Row 1: knit Row 2: K35 Leave the remaining 5 sts unworked. Turn. Row 3: slip 1, K29 Leave the remaining 5 sts unworked. Turn. Row 4: slip 1, K7, (K2tog) x 7, K13 (33 sts) Cast off. Break yarn, leaving a long tail. Fold the piece in half and oversew the center of the piece (see Appendix). Neck feathers Cast on 56 sts with yellow color yarn. Rows 1-2: purl Row 3: knit Rows 4-6: purl Row 7: K1, (K1, yo, K7tog, yo, K1) x 6, K1 (32 sts) Note: You can use a crochet hook to pull yarn through the 7 loops when it calls for K7tog. Row 8: P1, (P1, P1tbl, P1, P1tbl, P1) x 6, P1 (see Appendix for guidance how to work Ptbl) Rows 9-11: st st starting with a knit row 3

4 LittleOwlsHut Knitting pattern 2015 Cast off. Break yarn, leaving a long tail. Sew the row edges together using vertical mattress stitch. Comb Wind off some red color yarn before starting and put it aside. I wind 3-4 m. Cast on 22 sts with red color yarn. Work two rows of st st starting with a knit row. Front part of the comb Move 6 center sts onto a spare needle. Join reserved strand of red color yarn and work: Row 1: 3KFB, K2, 3KFB (14 sts), turn Rows 2-6: st st starting with a purl row Row 7: K1, (K2tog, K1) x 4, K1 (10 sts) Row 8: purl Row 9: K1, (K2tog) x 4, K1 (6 sts) of the last row and draw up tightly. Join reserved red color strand of yarn to these moved sts and work: Row 1: 6KFB (12 sts), turn Rows 2-4: st st Row 5: K1, (K2tog) x 5, K1 (7 sts) Row 6: purl of the last row and draw up tightly. Back part of the comb Continue working with your main working yarn. Move all remaining sts onto one needle. Row 1: K1, 2KFB, K2, 2KFB, K1 (12 sts) Rows 2-4: st st starting with a purl row Row 5: K1, (K2tog) x 5, K1 (7 sts) Row 6: purl of the last row and draw up tightly. Middle part of the comb Move the last four sts of the left needle and the first four sts of the right needle onto a spare needle. 4

Rows 1-6: st st starting with a knit row Row 7: K1, (K2tog) x 4 (5 sts) Row 8: purl on the needle and draw up tightly. Sew the row edges together using vertical mattress stitch. Stuff the piece. Beak Cast on 16 sts with orange color yarn. Rows 1-4: st st starting with a knit row Row 5: K1, (K2tog, K1) x 5 (11 sts) Row 6: purl Row 7: K1, (K2tog) x 5 (6 sts) on the needle and draw up tightly. 6 LittleOwlsHut Knitting pattern 2015 APPENDIX VERTICAL MATTRESS STITCH HORIZONTAL MATTRESS STITCH Insert your needle under the horizontal running thread between the edge stitch and the stitch next to it. Run the yarn under the running thread and then insert the needle under the matching horizontal running thread of the opposite edge. Work back and forth from one edge to the other until you ve worked several rows. Pull the yarn in the direction of the seam and edges of the pieces will start to adjoin. PURL THROUGH BACK LOOP (Ptbl) OVERSEW Insert right hand needle into the next stitch on the left hand needle through the back loop (the loop farthest from you). Wrap yarn around needle in the same way you normally would to purl and complete the purl stitch. Purling through the back loop results in a twisted stitch. 6
