As April is in full swing, I m seeing so many changes around me. The colors are amazing as the flowers and trees begin to bud and bloom. The grass is a vibrant shade of green. And if you live near me, there are honey bees everywhere, beginning their season of honey production. We took on the hobby of bee keeping this year. And this past week we moved 4 swarms of honey bees into their new homes. What an adventure! My two sons loved it...my black lab...he s not so sure yet. :-) Take a look at a few of the photos on pg. 4. I decided with all this change, I update the colors on our newsletter a bit. I hope you like it. :-) Also, I m beginning a series this month on interesting landmarks that have stood the test of time. My first is one in my own state of Indiana. The West Baden Springs Hotel. If your state has a landmark you would like to see featured, me and I will do my best to put it in future newsletter. Blessings, History of The West Baden Springs Resort... GARRISON HOLLOW PUBLISHING There is so much history with this resort. I m going to try to share as much as possible. But, let me begin by saying it is one of the most magnificent places I ve ever seen. The architecture is breathtaking, the rooms are clean and comfortable (just like home) and the staff warm and welcoming. Walking through the domed atrium is like walking back in time. The peacefulness just envelopes you and the furniture invites you to sit and enjoy the moment. This resort was originally built in 1855 by Dr. John Lane and in 1888 Lee W. Sinclair, an Indiana banker, obtained controlling interest in the hotel. In 1901 a fire completely destroyed the structure and Sinclair saw an opportunity to build the hotel of his dreams. Re-built in 1902, West Baden Springs Hotel was a magnificent site located in Orange County in Southern Indiana; a place where most people would least expect to find such a Inside this issue: Vintage Shawl Pattern 2 History of West Baden Springs 3 Honey Bee Move-In Photos! 4 unique and massive structure. Featuring a six-story domed atrium (the largest clear-span dome in the world until the Astrodome was built in 1963), 700 rooms, natural mineral springs used for bathing and drinking (it was advertised that drinking the water would cure a number of illnesses), the resort drew celebrities from all around the country. Well-known patrons to the hotel were "Diamond Jim" Brady, Al Capone, mayors from major cities, governors and even a presidential candidate. The stock market crash in 1929 caused the hotel to fall on hard times. In 1934, the Jesuits took over the property and, over time, altered the structure, removing much of its original ornamental design. (Continued on page 3)

3 History of The West Baden Springs Resort...continued In 1966 the Jesuits sold the property to a Michigan couple, who donated it to Northwood Institute, a private college offering a variety of bachelor's and associates' degrees. Especially wellknown were the automotive marketing and hotel and restaurant management programs, which held large shows and demonstrations under the domed atrium. In the early 80 s Larry Bird held overnight basketball camps--with games inside the domed atrium--at the facility. The college eventually closed and the property was tied up in litigation and over the next 13 years, the property was idle, allowing weather and time to take its toll on the place once known as the "Eighth Wonder of the World". The property was designated a National Landmark in 1987 and in 1996, Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana (HLFI) of Indianapolis, the largest nonprofit organization in the state, whose purpose is to preserve and protect historic buildings along with educating the public on the value of historic places, purchased the property in the hopes of preserving part of it and protecting it from more ruin. Cook Group decided to help HLFI by contributing to the cost of partial renovation of the historic hotel in the hopes that, together, they will attract a buyer who could put the landmark to use in some capacity, such as a hotel, corporate headquarters or even commercial/residential use.
