Design and Instruction by Larene Smith The Quilted Button, Mission Viejo, CA Finished Size: 65 x 65 General Information All seams are sewn with a 1/4 seam allowance. Pre-wash and press with spray starch. WOF = Width of Fabric. Press all seams open unless directed as will decrease bulk. Center is 18 Square finished. Refer to the COVER PICTURE as a guide. Label all fabric for easier construction. There are TEN borders and some have blocks within the borders.

Fabric A Cut as follows: a. Cut (1) strip at 18-1/2 x WOF Sub-cut into (1) 18-1/2 square Center. b. Cut (4) strips at 2-1/2 x WOF Block A. 2. Fabric B Cut as follows: a. Fussy Cut (2) pieces from RAW edge to RAW edge (lengthwise) from the LIGHT section at 5-1/2 x 45-1/2 (Piece 1) and (4) 5-1/2 squares (Piece 2). b. Fussy Cut (8) 5-1/2 squares from the DARK section of the remaining fabric (Piece 3). 3. Fabric C Cut (8) strips at 2-1/2 x WOF Side Outer Border 10 and Block B. 4. Fabric D Cut as follows: a. Cut (4) strips at 3-1/2 x WOF Sub-cut into (4) 3-1/2 x 37-1/2 rectangles Border 4. b. Cut (5) strips at 3-1/2 x WOF Sew all the strips together at the 3-1/2 edge then sub-cut into (2) 3-1/2 x 45-1/2 rectangles (Sides Border 8) and (2) 3-1/2 x 53-1/2 rectangles (Top/Bottom Border 8). 5. Fabric E Cut (2) strips at 5-1/2 x WOF Sub-cut into (8) 5-1/2 squares (Piece 4). 6. Fabric F Cut as follows: a. Cut (2) strips at 1-1/2 x WOF Sub-cut into (2) 1-1/2 x 20-1/2 rectangles and (2) 1-1/2 x 18-1/2 rectangles Border 1. b. Cut (5) strips at 1-1/2 x WOF Sew all the strips together at the 1-1/2 edge then sub-cut into (2) 1-1/2 x 45-1/2 rectangles Sides Border 7 and (2) 1-1/2 x 47-1/2 rectangles Top/Bottom Border 7. c. Cut (6) strips at 1-1/2 x WOF Sew all the strips together at the 1-1/2 edge then sub-cut into (2) 1-1/2 x 53-1/2 rectangles (Sides Border 9) and (2) 1-1/2 x 55-1/2 rectangles (Top/Bottom Border 9). 7. Fabric G Cut as follows: a. Cut (2) strips at 1-1/2 x WOF Block A. b. Cut (2) strips at 3 x WOF Border Fabric H Cut (2) strips at 3 x WOF Border Fabric I Cut as follows: a. Cut (4) strips at 1-1/2 x WOF Side Outer Border 11 and Block B.

Cut (4) strips at 1-1/2 x WOF Sub-cut into (2) 1-1/2 x 33-1/2 rectangles Sides Border 5 and (2) 1-1/2 x 35-1/2 rectangles Top/Bottom Border 5. 10.

5 b. Cut (4) strips at 1-1/2 x WOF Sub-cut into (2) 1-1/2 x 25-1/2 rectangles Sides Border 3 and (2) 1-1/2 x 27-1/2 rectangles Top/Bottom Border 3. c. Cut (1) strip at 3-1/2 x WOF Sub-cut into (4) 3-1/2 squares Border 4 (cornerstones). d. Cut (4) strips at 1-1/2 x WOF Sub-cut into (2) 1-1/2 x 33-1/2 rectangles Sides Border 5 and (2) 1-1/2 x 35-1/2 rectangles Top/Bottom Border Binding Cut (7) strips at 2-1/2 x WOF Cut off the selvage and sew all the strips together at the 2-1/2 edge. Step 2 Block A 11. Sew (1) Fabric A 2-1/2 strip to each side of (1) Fabric G 1-1/2 strip to make a new strip at 5-1/2 x WOF Sub-cut into (12) 5-1/2 squares. 12. Label and set aside for use later. Step 3 Block B 13. Sew (1) Fabric C 2-1/2 strip to each side of (1) Fabric I 1-1/2 strip to make a new strip at 5-1/2 x WOF. 14. Cut off the selvages and sew the new strips together at the 5-1/2 edge then sub-cut into (2) 5-1/2 x 65-1/2 rectangles Side Outer Border 10 and (4) 5-1/2 squares Block B. 15. Label and set aside for use later. Block A Block B Step 4 Borders Border Sew (1) Fabric F 1-1/2 x 18-1/2 rectangle to the SIDES of the CENTER and then sew (1) Fabric F 1-1/2 x 20-1/2 rectangle to TOP and BOTTOM to finish BORDER 1 at 20-1/2 square. Note: From this point on each time a border is added it will be labeled CENTER for easier construction of the Borders. Border Sew (1) Fabric G (LIGHT) 3 strip to (1) Fabric H (DARK) 3 strip to make a new strip at 5-1/2 x WOF Make (2) Sub-cut into (18) 5-1/2 x 3 rectangles. 18. Sew (5) of the rectangles just completed together at the 3 edge with the DARK towards the LEFT to measure 25-1/2 x 3 for the Top and Bottom of Border Sew (4) of the rectangles together as previously done to measure 20-1/2 x 3 for the Sides of Border Sew (1) of the 20-1/2 x 3 rectangles to the LEFT side with LIGHT towards the top. 21. Sew the remaining 20-1/2 x 3 rectangle to the RIGHT side with DARK towards the top. 22. Sew (1) of the 25-1/2 x 3 rectangle to the Top with the DARK towards the Left. 23. Sew the remaining 25-1/2 x 3 rectangle to the Bottom with the LIGHT towards the Left to measure at 25-1/2 square. Border Sew (1) Fabric I 1-1/2 x 25-1/2 rectangle to each side of the CENTER then sew (1) Fabric I 1-1/2 x 27-1/2 rectangles to the top and bottom to measure 27-1/2 square. Border Sew (1) Fabric D 3-1/2 x 27-1/2 to each side of the CENTER.

6 26. Sew (1) Fabric I 3-1/2 square to each 3-1/2 edge of (1) Fabric D 3-1/2 x 27-1/2 rectangle to measure 33-1/2 x 3-1/2 Make (2) then sew to the top and bottom to measure 33-1/2 square. Border Sew (1) Fabric I 1-1/2 x 33-1/2 rectangle to each side of the CENTER then sew (1) Fabric I 1-1/2 x 35-1/2 rectangle to the top and bottom to measure 35-1/2 square. Border Sew (1) Block A, Piece 4, Piece 3, Block A, Piece 3, Piece 4, Block A together as shown below to measure 35-1/2 x 5-1/2 Make (2) and sew to the top and bottom of the CENTER to measure 35-1/2 x 45-1/2. Border 6 Top and Bottom 29. Sew (1) of Piece 1 (Fabric B) 45-1/2 x 5-1/2 rectangles to each side to measure 45-1/2 square. Border Sew (1) Fabric F 1-1/2 x 45-1/2 rectangle to the sides of the CENTER then sew (1) Fabric F 1-1/2 x 47-1/2 rectangle to the top and bottom to measure 47-1/2 square. Border Sew (1) Fabric D 3-1/2 x 45-1/2 rectangle to each side of the CENTER then sew (1) Fabric D 3-1/2 x 53-1/2 rectangle to the top and bottom to measure 53-1/2 square. Border Sew (1) Fabric F 1-1/2 x 53-1/2 rectangle to each side of the CENTER then sew (1) Fabric F 1-1/2 x 55-1/2 rectangle to the top and bottom to measure 55-1/2 square. Border Sew (1) Block B, Piece 2, Block A, Piece 4, Piece 3, Block A, Piece 3, Piece 4, Block A, Piece 2, Block B together to measure 55-1/2 x 5-1/2 Make (2) and sew to the top and bottom of the center to measure 55-1/2 x 65-1/2. Border 10 Top and Bottom 34. Sew (1) Block B (Side Outer Border) 5-1/2 x 65-1/2 rectangle to each side to finish the quilt top at 65-1/2 square. Step 5 Finishing the Quilt 35. Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top and quilt as desired. 36. Using the Binding 2-1/2 strips sew on the binding to finish the quilt.
