1 Patterns & Instructions by Happy PattyCrochet Skill Level Beginner Skill Needed Crochet, Sewing Introduction In here you will find pattern and instructions for an easy, elegant and stylish crochet triangular shaped earring. Pattern ebook includes a photo guide for the entire making of the earring, with a diagram, followed by instructions in American Standard Terms included inside the photo guide. 2 Materials Front - Crochet Thread Size #20 in your choice of colors. - Crochet Hook Size 1.0mm to 1.6mm (your choice). - 2 x Earring Hooks. - 4 x Jump or Split Rings. - Rhinestones (your preferred type, Optional). - Tapestry needle. - Utility knife (or equally sharp object), scissors. - An Empty plastic bottle (water / coke / etc) Pattern notes The e-book starts with a photo tutorial with the pattern diagram and then the instructions for the crocheted part is inserted when required (in American Standard Terms, See appendix for conversion to British). Materials Note : I recommend using a 100% mercerized cotton thread in Size #20. But, of course, any durable thread in size between #10 to #40 should work. 3 As mentioned before, there are few things more satisfying in DIY then to create something using simple, cheap or even better, used materials :) Here, we ll use a used plastic bottle to make the core of the earring (You can make 5 pairs of earrings from a single bottle). This earring is made in 3 stages : Stage 1 : Making the Earrings Core To achieve the earrings shape we ll use an empty coke bottle - any large plastic bottle should work. I m using a 1.25l coca-cola bottle, but, others bottle should work as well. Stage 2 : The Crocheting Part Next, we ll crochet around the Core - 2 rounds of easy and fun crochet :) Stage 3 : The sewing part Lastly, we ll make 2 zig-zag motions to create an x s shape in the gap in the middle, by sewing from side to side (while optionally adding rhinestones). This ebook shows how to make this earring following the stages above. It recommended to follow the photo guide before starting to crochet. Page 3

4 Preparing the Earring s Core The core is the part that gives the earrings its shape, and provides firmness and flexibility. We are going to make the core from a used/empty plastic bottle, I m using a 1.25L Coke bottle, but, of course, any bottle of that similar size, with a similar shape at the top would work great! Step 1 - Empty the bottle from its content (I can t recommend drinking it, lol). Step 2 - Using a utility knife, or any other equivalently sharp tool - cut the bottle, following the top end of the sticker. Step 3 - Store the left part (or throw/recycle). We ll only be using the right part. Step 4 - Next, cut the bottle following the bottom edge of the sticker. Step 5 - You ll be left with that... Page 4

5 Preparing the Earring s Core (#2) Step 6 - Finish the cutting part of the bottle, by cutting the bottom part (if you re using a standard coke bottle, you ll just have to follow a groove). Step 7 - Finally, you ll end up with this element. Step 8 - Next, cut out 2 elements from this element, buy cutting following the vertical grooves (see red arrows). Step 9 - And we have 2 rectangular elements. Step 10 - Next, apply fixes and smoothen the corners, to reach the elegant shape you desire. Step 11 - Cut the edges as well, if needed. Page 5

6 Preparing the Earring s Core (#3) Step 12 - One element - once fixes are done. Step 13 - Next, place the finished element on top of the other one, and simply cut around the shape of the finished element, to duplicate it. Step 14 - Now, using a marker, trace on the element, following its shape, in a distance of around a 0.5 / 1cm. Step 15 - Cut the element, following the line you marked. Step 16 - Once the element is done. Step 17 - Repeat the same with the next element, using the first one (copying it). Page 6

7 Preparing the Earring s Core (#4) Step 18 - Next, we ll shape the element to reach the wave-y shape we want. We ll start by tightly holding the element in the middle. Step and twisting it around its vertical axis. Do not use too much force as it might break it. Step 20 - Next, using a circular element (here I m using the back of my hook), press tightly (outwards) around the top part of both vertical edges. Step 21 - The element s edge will look roughly like this after you finish working on the edges. Step 22 - Repeat the same, for the other edges, press inwards this time. Step 23 - Finally, the element should look roughly like this. Repeat the same for the other element as well. Page 7

8 Earring - Pattern Diagram First Round is sc crochets all around, and around the earrings core. Please note that when you crochet the second round and reach the corners, you might or might not will need to crochet a single crochet increase. Simply see if the gap is filled or not, if not, crochet an inc. Red element imitates the earrings core. Happy PattyCrochet Page 8

9 Top Element - Instructions Make 2 of this. Keep the thread tight when doing the first round. Please see the photo tutorial in the following pages before crocheting this part. Crocheting the elements takes two rounds : Round 1 : Crochet sc around the element s core. Its better to start at one of the bottom corners (as this will prevent the thread from sliding at the beginning). The amount of sc is not important, make sure you cover the entire element in a tight and balanced manner. Finish the round with a sl-st to beg sc. Round 2 : Start with a chain, and continue to crochet a sc in each stitch around. Please note, when you reach the corners, if you crochet a single crochet around the corner and a gap is left, re-do the corner and crochet a single crochet increase in the corner s stitch. Finish the round with a sl-st to beg ch. Page 9

10 Crocheting the Earring Now that you have the finished cores, we can move on to crochet and finish the earrings. We will be thread size #20 (in you choice of colors), and crochet around the core (see photos). In the photos I m using crochet thread size #20, but you can easily use slightly smaller or larger threads. Step 24 - Use Thread size #20 with a matching hook size 1.0mm. Step 25 - And crocheting single crochets around the element, starting at on of the bottom corners. At the beginning, crochet around the short tail of the threads as well. Step 26 - Add the thread at on of the corners. Step Yarn over Step 28 - And complete the single crochet. Make sure the short tail of the thread is in the back of the element (that way it will be hidden). Page 10

11 Crocheting the Earring (#2) Step 29 - Keep crocheting single crochets. Step 30 - After around one third of the first edge. Step 31 - Last sc of the first round. Step 32 - Finish the round with a sl-st to beg sc. Step 33 - Complete the sl-st. Step 34 - Begin the second round with a chain. Page 11

12 Crocheting the Earring (#3) Step 35 - And work around, in each stitch, a single crochet. Step 36 - Finish with a sl-st to beg ch and Fasten off thread. Step 37 - Once the element is done. Page 12

13 The final step in making this crochet, is filling the middle of the element with some nice shiny rocks :) If you don t have anything to use, you can simply make this stage without the rocks, it will still look quite elegant! Sewing the Middle To make the zig-zags, we ll simply sew the thread from side to side, adding 4-5 stones to each side (it will vary, so you ll have to test). Step 38 - Using a thin tapestry needle (needs to go through the crystals). Step 39 - Add the thread at the back of the earring, at one of the bottom corners. Step 40 - In my case, I start the zig-zag with 5 rocks, they fill the gap nicely. Step 41 - The angle of the thread is completely up to your taste! Step 42 - Sew the thread a couple of times in place to ensure tightness. Page 13

14 Sewing the Middle (#2) Step 43 - Repeat 40-42, heading upwards (in my case I added 4 blingy rocks). Step 44 - Once you reach the top, slide the thread to the other side, and start repeating the same heading down. Step 45 - This is how, roughly, the element should after completing our way up. Step 46 - Head down in the same fashion, keeping the angles the same (this will make the element look balanced). Step 47 - Once you complete going down, tight the thread and cut. A front look at the element. Step 48 - And a look at the back. Page 14

15 Sewing the Middle (#3) Step 49 - Take 2 jump rings and a earring hook. Step and attach at the top of the element in the same fashion as shown in the photo. Step 51 - And here is a finished earring! Page 15

16 That s it :) The Earrings are done. Since you cut the plastic bottle already, why not finish it and crochet 4 pairs more?
