18 HOW TO CROCHET: Solomon s knot By Claire Montgomerie This mesh-like stitch once mastered is very easy and quick to work up, creating the perfect fabric for open shawls and scarves. 2 3 This decorative mesh stitch is socalled after the ancient name for a decorative motif made up of two crossing loops or ovals, creating four points. From our final sample, you can therefore see why it has come to be known as a Solomon s knot, but it can also be called a love or lover s knot. The basic stitch is a series of lengthened chains interlocked with double crochet to hold the stitches in place. This simple chain of extended loops can be used instead of a normal base chain to create a more decorative look, especially useful in jewelry chains. Due to the imprecise nature of working extended chains, the stitch can be fiddly to conquer but, once practiced, you will find that it becomes easier to create an even length of chain and a resulting neat and uniform fabric. To create the all over, knotted fabric, you must keep repeating the rows of extended loops locked with single crochet, joining rows with single crochet into alternate scs across the row. The edging stitches are usually made up of slightly shorter elongated chains (about two-thirds as long as the basic chain) to create a neat border Guides Love of Crochet

19 Photo 1 Making the basic chain Work one chain, lengthening the loop as much as required by the pattern or your own aesthetics. If you want to ensure a constant extended chain, you can insert the end of a ruler or a finger or two into every loop. Photo 2 Yo and pull loop through extended chain. Photo 3 To lock this extended loop, insert hook through back thread of the long chain, keeping it separate from the two main front threads. Yo. Photo 4 Draw a loop through this single back thread.
