1 Welcome to the 2011 Western PA Quilt Along Hi Ladies, Our 2011 Block Contest results are in and Pinwheel won hands down with ten submissions as of April 8, Congratulations Carol; and thanks to all who participated in the contest. In Maggie Mallon s book, 5,500 Quilt Block Designs, if you look up Pinwheel, you will find forty-five variations for the Pinwheel block. So I decided that I would choose one from the middle range not too easy and definitely not too complex. So without further ado, allow me to introduce the Pinwheel block for our project: Louisiana Pinwheel (Louisiana Block) As you can see this block is a simple four patch that finishes up looking quite complicated. Check out the following suggested quilt setting. "

2 Waiting for a Summer Breeze Finished Block Size: 8 Finished Quilt Size: 91 Square (approx.) So here s your invitation to join me for our third annual WPA Quilt Along. This year, I will be making this beautiful quilt and I was hoping that perhaps you might want to quilt along with me? For our new members who don t know the ropes, the project will begin on May 1 st, and if you are able to complete one Pinwheel block each day, you should be able to complete a full size quilt by the middle of August. We will close the project with a Show & Tell Covered Dish Supper in North Park, Allison Park, PA. (More information on our Picnic will be forth coming toward the end of July.) Below you will find fabric requirements and cutting instructions for the suggested quilt setting as shown on page 2 above. This is strictly a #

3 suggested quilt setting. Remember, since we have no quilt police, you will be able to work at your own pace, choose any quilt setting in any size or color combination you wish. The only request is that you use the new 2011 Pinwheel quilt blocks in your project. Suggested Quilt Setting Yardage Requirements and Cutting Directions for: Waiting for a Summer Breeze Finished Quilt Size is 91 Square (approx.) Total Blocks: 61 Block Size: 8 Finished Light Value Block Background Fabric 2-3/4 yards Rectangles: Need /2 x 4-1/2 rectangles Cut: 15.5 strips - 4-1/2 x 42 each Recut: 15.5 strips into: /2 x 4-1/2 rectangles (Yield: approx. 16 rectangles per strip) Squares: Need: /8 s Cut: 9 strips - 2-7/8 x 42 each Recut: 9 strips into: /8 s (Yield approx. 14 s per strip) Recut: 122 s diagonally once for a total of 244 s Medium Value Scraps for Pinwheel Blade Accents Approx. 1+ yards of fabric scraps 3-1/4 or better are needed. Squares: From 122 scraps of 3-1/4 or better: Cut: /8 s from scrap fabrics Recut: 122 s diagonally once for a total of 244 s **Note: If using a Non-Scrappy Medium Value Fabric for the Pinwheel Blade Accents, you will need 3/4 yard of fabric. Follow the cutting directions for the Light Value Squares above. Dark Value Scraps for the Pinwheel Blades Approx. 1-1/2 yards of fabric scraps 5-3/4 or better are needed. Squares: From 61 scraps of 5-3/4 or better: Cut: /4 s Recut: 61 s diagonally " for a total of 244 s. $

4 **Note: If using a Non-Scrappy Dark Value Fabric for the Pinwheel Blades, you will need 1-1/2 yards of dark fabric. Cut: 8 strips 5-1/4 x 42 each. Recut: 5-1/4 strips into /4 s Recut: 61 s diagonally " for a total of 244 s. Sashing: 1-1/2 yards for the 144, 1-1/2 unfinished sashing pieces. Cut: 6 strips 8-1/2 x 42. Recut: 6 strips into 144 sashing pieces - 1-1/2 x 8-1/2 rectangles. Sashing Corner Squares: 1/3 yard for the 84 small sashing corners. Cut: 3 strips 1-1/5 x 42 and Recut: 3 strips into /5 s. Setting Triangles: 3/4 yard for the 20 setting triangles. Cut: /2 s Recut: 5 s diagonally " for a total of 20 setting s. Corner Setting Triangles: 1/8 yard for the 4 corner setting triangles. Cut: 2-6-1/2 s Recut: 2 s diagonally once for a total of 4 corner s. Narrow Inner Border: 3/4 yard - This yardage assumes that you are piecing the border and that your narrow border is 1-1/2 unfinished. Medium Inner Border: 7/8 yard - This yardage assumes that you are piecing the border and that your narrow border is 2-1/2 unfinished Wide Outer Border: 1-3/8 yards - This yardage assumes that you are piecing the border and that your wide border is 4-1/2 unfinished. Binding: 3/4 yard for 400 of 2-1/4 wide straight of grain binding Cut: 10 strips: 2-1/4 x 42 %

5 Block Assembly For each unfinished 8-1/2 Louisiana Pinwheel block, you will need to cut: A. Four Rectangles: Cut four 2-1/2 x 4-1/2 each from the light background fabric: B. Four Small Light Triangles: Take two - 2-7/8 light background s that have been recut diagonally once into 2 s each, for a total of 4 s. C. Four Small Medium Triangles: Take two - 2-7/8 medium background s that have been recut diagonally once into 2 s each, for a total of 4 s. D. Four Large Dark Triangles: Take one 5-1/4 that has been Recut: diagonally " for a total of 4 s. &

6 Stitching Directions: A. The Flying Geese Units: Stitch one medium value triangle to the right side of the large dark value triangle; and stitch a light value triangle to the left side of the dark value triangle. Piece three more Flying Geese Units. B. Piece one light value rectangle to the top of the each of the Flying Geese Units. You have now completed 4 square units C. Lay out the 4 square units together. After rotating each square until they resemble the sample block, stitch the squares together to complete your Louisiana Pinwheel block. Voila Only a few more blocks to do Enjoy. '

7 I m going to try it. One block a day doesn t sound like much as long as I don t get too behind with my life s little adventures. There s no pressure since I still haven t hired any badgering quilt police. It s not difficult to join and I really think you will enjoy it.
