Project One: Pincushion The objectives of this project are to follow the production plan (tutorial) to produce and evaluate a pincushion. Throughout this project, you will be required to: follow the production plan supplied, reading ALL instructions, design the colours and embroidery of your pincushion, produce your pincushion; and briefly evaluate your product and production process. You are required to submit your workbook, with the pincushion evaluation completed, along with your finished product for assessment. Basic production plan Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Make your 10cm X 10cm pattern piece Cut out your four pieces of fabric (two of each colour) Design your embroidery Embroider your design using backstitch Sew your pincushion using the tutorial on the following pages Stuff your pincushion Hand sew your gap closed Evaluate your work and hand it in Finish any incomplete work. Your pincushion is now due for assessment. Textiles & Design, Alamanda College Pincushion instructions 1
Pincushion Instructions Materials required: Two contrasting fabric scraps Paper square (10x10cm) - pattern Toy Filler Rice Button Embroidery thread and needle Pins and sewing needle Scissors Rotary cutter and metal rule (optional) YouTube tutorial of a similar pincushion: Step one: Trace around the post- it note on one piece of fabric Step two: Remove post- it and fold over itself so the fabric is doubled and pin in place Textiles & Design, Alamanda College 2
Step three: Cut around the square Repeat for other fabric Cut the rectangles in half into squares. Step four: Arrange squares as shown below. Step five: Choose one square, fold into a triangle and press with hot iron Design your embroidery, and draw it in the box below Choose embroidery thread and draw design on triangle as shown above Step six: Use backstitch to fill in your embroidery design Tutorial on You Tube: re=youtu.be When your embroidery is complete, arrange your four fabric panels as shown Textiles & Design, Alamanda College 3
Step seven: Put right hand squares on top of left hand square RIGHT SIDE TOGETHER like turning a page in a book and pin in place Step eight: Use a SEAM ALLOWANCE OF 1cm Sew down the right hand edge with the sewing foot right on the edge of the fabric as a guide. Remember to back stitch the ends of your fabric so the threads do not come apart. Remove pins as you go DO NOT sew over pins. The needle can break. Repeat for the other two fabric pieces Step nine: Open the fabric and press with a hot iron Step ten: Put top sewn squares on top of bottom sewn squares - RIGHT SIDE TOGETHER and pin in place Sew along the pinned edge, again placing the foot on the edge of fabric. When you open out the sewn squares, your project should look like this: Textiles & Design, Alamanda College 4
Step eleven: Fold back over and pin the short edges together as shown. Sew the edges together, again using the foot on the edge of the fabric as a guide. Step twelve: Hold the middle seam of each free edge and pull apart to form a box like shape Pin along the free edge. Using extra pins, mark a 3cm gap to remember not to sew all the way across. You must leave a gap to turn your project the right way and to fill it with toy filler & rice. Step thirteen: Sew across the seam, remembering the LEAVE the GAP in the seam. Step fourteen: Turn your project the right way around and poke out the edges using a pencil through the gap you have created Stuff with toy filler and add a couple of teaspoons of rice for weight Textiles & Design, Alamanda College 5
Step fifteen: Use ladder stitch to close the seam. There is an external tutorial for this here: Qbnw Step seventeen: Sew your button in place. First, sew a few stitches from back to front, pulling tight to bring the pincushion together. Next, sew on the button. This is difficult to demonstrate on paper. Please ask for help if you need it. Put your pins in and you re FINISHED! Textiles & Design, Alamanda College Pincushion instructions 6
Evaluation of your pincushion Do you think you fulfilled the brief, developing a functional pincushion to use during textiles? Why/why not? Which steps of the pincushion did you find the most challenging and why? Describe at least two steps. If you made another pincushion, what would you do differently, or what would you seek more help with? Overall, are you happy with your product? Why/why not? On a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being less than satisfactory and 5 excellent, how would you rate your pincushion? (please circle a number) Function Aesthetics Presentation Why have you given these scores? Textiles & Design, Alamanda College 7
