3 NEEDLE CASE CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS: From the grey fabric cut: 3 Size A hexagons from pattern insert From the cream fabric cut: 3 Size C hexagons from the pattern insert From the red fabric cut: 2 Size C hexagons from the pattern insert 1 ¾ Hexagon (follow EPP instructions) From the taupe fabric cut: 6 ¾ Hexagon Flower Petals From the wool felt: 1 Size D hexagon from the pattern insert From the stabilizer: 3 Size C hexagons from the pattern insert CONSTRUCTION: Follow the EPP instructions and the diagram below to make a hexagon flower. 4 Press. Remove the papers and applique to the right side of one of the cream hexagons, making sure it is centred. Fold the 2 red hexagons in half with wrong sides together. Press. Front of Needlecase Lay the grey hexagon A wrong side up on the ironing board. Centre a peltex hexagon on top and then the pieced hexagon. Sue Daley Designs Phone: Bibs and Bobs Page 3

5 Fold one edge over approx ¼ and press. Fold the same edge over again the same amount, and press. Continue in this manner until you have all six sides folded over and pressed. Using an appliqué stitch or a slip stitch, sew the edges in place. Note: The corners will mitre automatically. Do an extra stitch into each corner. With 2 strands of embroidery thread and a running stitch, sew the felted wool hexagon to the back of the pieced QAYG hexagon. Make another QAYG hexagon in the same manner. 6 This time you will layer: Hexagon A in grey fabric Peltex Hexagon C in cream fabric Hexagon C in red fabric folded in half with wrong sides together (to form a pocket) Make 2 exactly the same. With embroidery thread sew 3 rows of whipped running stitch as shown in the diagram on one of these hexagons. Whipped running stitch: Sue Daley Designs Phone: Bibs and Bobs Page 5

7 Running stitch: 2 strands of embroidery floss Whip stitch: 6 strands of embroidery floss Sew 1 row of whipped running stitch as shown in the diagram on the remaining hexagon. Sew these 2 pieces together with the grey sides together. Use a ladder stitch or a blind slip stitch leaving the top open. Sew the front hexagon to the left side with the same stitch. 9 PIN CUSHION CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS: From the red fabric cut: 1 Size C Hexagon from the pattern insert 1 ¾ Hexagon (follow EPP instructions) From the cream fabric cut: 1 Size C Hexagon From the taupe fabric cut: 6 ¾ Hexagon Flower Petals (follow EPP instructions) CONSTRUCTION: Follow the EPP and Applique instructions and the diagram to make the pincushion top as shown in the needle case instructions. Press. Lay the pieced top onto the Size C red hexagon with right sides together, and sew around the outside edges leaving a gap on one side. Turn right side out and stuff firmly with fibre fill. Sew the opening closed. Sew a button on the top and bottom, pulling tightly. Fasten off securely. Sue Daley Designs Phone: Bibs and Bobs Page 8

11 THREAD CATCHER CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS: From the grey fabric cut: 1 Size A Hexagon from the pattern insert From the cream fabric cut: 1 Size C Hexagon from the pattern insert From the stabilizer cut: 1 Size C Hexagon from the pattern insert You will need to cut the stabilizer piece again as shown: CONSTRUCTION: Follow the QAYG instructions to complete. Note: The stabilizer piece will lay on top of the Hexagon A cutting it just helps when folding it into a triangle. Make sure it is centred on the hexagon. 12 FLOWER BOWL CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS: From the grey fabric cut: 1 Size A Hexagon from the pattern insert From the red fabric cut: 1 Size C Hexagon from the pattern insert From the stabilizer cut: 1 Size C Hexagon from the pattern insert Follow the QAYG instructions to complete the hexagon. 13 ENGLISH PAPER PIECING GENERAL REQUIREMENTS Size 11 Milliners/straw needles. The finer the needles the neater your stitches will be. Sewline Fabric Glue Pen. Superior Bottom Line thread for sewing the pieces together. When you sew the pieces together the thread drags across the top of the card and it shreds therefore weakening the thread. Superior Bottom Line is a polyester thread and is extremely strong. The thread is very fine and it is not necessary to have lots of colours as it blends well and disappears into the fabric. INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SEWLINE FABRIC GLUE PEN METHOD These instructions apply to all shapes when paper piecing. Fold your fabric into layers if necessary and place your acrylic template on top of the fabric and rotary cut around the shape. HINT: If you are fussy cutting you will need to cut one shape out at a time on the same pattern repeat of the fabric for as many shapes as you need. Lay your fabric shape wrong side up and place the paper shape on top making sure you centre it. Run the glue pen along one side of the paper shape, being careful not to take it over the edge onto the fabric (this will cause a build up making it difficult to stitch through). Fold the fabric over and hold for a moment. Continue around the shape in the one direction until all sides are turned over. Sue Daley Designs Phone: Bibs and Bobs Page 12

14 Note: With some of the shapes the corners will fold in nice and neatly (e.g. the hexagon) and others (e.g. stars or pies) don t. See the diagram above. Leave the tails hanging out making sure that the fabric is nice and tight around the card. Note: 1. Don t use too much glue. You will get the hang of it after you have done a few. 2. In the warm weather the glue can become soft (i.e. you will use too much). I suggest putting it in the fridge for a few minutes. TO ASSEMBLE THE PIECES Place right sides together and whip stitch them from corner to corner. Open them out and with a dry iron give them a press. Note: 1. When sewing stars or pies together do not sew the tails in. They will automatically lay flat behind your work. 2. When sewing stars or pies make sure that you sew two halves and then sew them together with one seam through the middle. This will eliminate having a hole in the centre of your work. Paper can be removed once the blocks are surrounded and stabilised by other blocks. Gently peel the fabric back from the papers. Note: If you are having problems peeling the fabric back from the paper, you have probably used too much glue. Just dampen slightly with water which will soften the glue and help you to peel back the fabric. Papers can then be re-used a number of times. Sue Daley Designs Phone: Bibs and Bobs Page 13

15 CONSTRUCTION QUILT AS YOU GO HEXAGONS NOTE: This technique can be used for any sizes of the Busyfingers QAYG hexagons For each hexagon: If you have acrylic templates use your rotary cutter to cut around the shapes. If you are using the paper pattern you will need to trace around the shape and cut with scissors. Cut a large shape from your backing fabric. Cut a small shape from your main fabric. Cut a small shape from your wadding or stabilizer. OPTION 1. If you are doing embroidery, candlewicking or appliqué now is the time to do it. For embroidery or candlewicking, mark the pattern onto the main fabric and embroider your pattern. 2. For appliqué, use your preferred technique. 3. After you have finished the embroidery or appliqué give your work a press. 4. Place the wadding behind your main fabric and baste together with your preferred method. Place the small set (main fabric and wadding) right side up onto the wrong side of the large piece. Make sure that you centre it. I usually spray baste these together so as they will not move. Take the pieces to the iron and turn the first edge over approx ¼ and press. Turn the same edge over again and press. This should be approx ¼ wide. Work your way around the hexagon till you have done all 6 sides. With your needle and thread and using an appliqué stitch sew the edge all the way around. I always do an extra stitch into the corners. For stitching hexagons together place right sides together and join them together by using a slip stitch or a ladder stitch.
