7 QUESTIONS AND ANWERS After installing FlyTampa-HongKong, FS still loads the default VHHX Airport. Please add FlyTampa-HongKong to your scenery database by clicking <SETTINGS> <SCENERY LIBRARY>. There click the <ADD AREA> button and choose the folder /Addon Scenery/FlyTampa-HongKong. FS2004 Note: You need to restart FS2004 for the changes to take effect. Kai-Tak is deserted of Aircraft. Simplest solution: Enable the Static Aircraft Option during installation. This will fill the airport with Airliners specifically designed for Kai-Tak. AI Traffic for Kai-Tak. Kai-Tak has been closed since 1998 and is therefore not included in the flight schedules of the default Flight Simulator as well as modern AI packages such as Ultimate-Traffic, MyTraffic, World-of-AI etc. There are however several simple solutions to get AI traffic to the airport, please see the section AI Traffic for Kai-Tak. Checkerboard is too small & IGS approach path & lights are misplaced. We highly recommended the following video for real VS. virtual comparisons. The checkerboard itself, the hill it was mounted on, as well as the approach lighting have been carefully designed and positioned. The expectation to see a much larger checkerboard is likely related to this element having been oversized in several Kai-Tak sceneries since the FS 2000 era. Flight Simulator 7

8 QUESTIONS AND ANWERS Trees have rendering problems in FS2004. Autogen trees can cause a temporary graphics glitch as they fade-in. If you see a permanent halo or corona type effect around trees, make sure to use default FS2004 trees or convert your tree textures to DXT1 format. Files: FS9/texture/treesSU.bmp, treessp.bmp, treesfa.bmp, treeswi.bmp, treeshw.bmp. Some AI aircraft don t land on the runway centerline. Each AI aircraft flies the IGS approach differently according to the Flight Dynamics in its aircraft.cfg file. This was also the case at the real Kai-Tak with various airliners using slightly different procedures. Some AI models will have difficulty aligning to the runway in time and land on a tilted angle etc. This varying behavior makes AI landings at Kai-Tak very interesting to watch. Jetways won t move in FSX. Install the scenery with the option Static Jetways disabled. Airport tarmac/ground appears grey at night in FSX. If you use FSX s DirectX-10 Preview mode you must install the scenery in SDK- Compliance Mode. IGS approach lighting is too dim. If you wish to intensify the approach lights, simply create one or more duplicates (copy & paste) of the file _kt_appr13_lights.bgl within the folder: /Addon Scenery/FlyTampa- HongKong/scenery/ Runway and PAPI lights are too small & dim in FSX. Install the scenery in SDK-Compliance Mode for brighter runway lighting. Can t obtain clearance when holding at the runway entrances. The hold-marking in this scenery have been placed at their real-world positions, which are too far from the runway for the FS engine to handle. The solution is to taxi closer to the runway until clearance can be obtained. 8

9 QUESTIONS AND ANWERS AI-Traffic jams. When runway 31 is used AI traffic congestions can easily occur. This is a natural limitation of Kai-Tak s taxiway layout that the AI engine cannot overcome. Fortunately, runway 31 is used very rarely if you rely on real world weather. AI-Ships don t show or move. For AI-Ships to work you must enable GA-Traffic within FS Settings. AI-Ships will begin moving immediately if you set the time within the first 14 minutes of every hour, or between 30 to 44 minutes. Note that not all ships within this scenery move. When are Fireworks displayed? Firework displays are scheduled for the first 10 minutes of every hour starting at 8 PM until 12 PM. What FS2004 files are copied besides /Addon Scenery/FlyTampa-HongKong? FS2004/scenery/name/scenery/HP bgl. Note: Original file renamed to HP bak. Depeding on the options you select during installation files will also be copied to the /effects/ and /aircraft/ folders. 9

10 AI TRAFFIC FOR KAI-TAK Because of the variety of AI-Addons that exist for Flight Simulator, it is not possible for us to provide a one-fits-all solution. Below you will find several options, some of which can be implemented with only a few mouse-clicks. World of AI Pre-compiled traffic for use with WoAI is available for download at the FlyTampa Forums ( Ultimate Traffic Traffic Redirection within Ultimate Traffic for FS2004 or FSX can be performed with this simple procedure: Press Utilities, then Airports. In the Search box enter VHHH and press Search. Next enter VHHX in the Assignment Identifier field and press Save. Finally press Compile. MyTrafficX For version 5.1b of MyTrafficX schedules can be downloaded and installed into the /MyTraffcic/Scenery/ folder. Version 5.2 of MyTrafficX will introduce traffic for KaiTak out of the box. Custom or generic Traffic 1. Simplest solution for FSX: Download and install Kai Tak (VHHX) AI Flight Plans by Jim Vile. It provides pre-compiled Traffic using FSX s default aircraft as well as Flightplan samples for use with 3rd party AI aircraft. Note that default FSX aircraft used as AI will have a drastic impact on performance. 10

11 AI TRAFFIC FOR KAI-TAK Custom or generic Traffic 2. Redirecting your existing Traffic from Hong Kong s new airport (VHHH) to Kai-Tak. To perform the redirection of traffic from VHHH to VHHX you must first decompile your main Traffic BGL file (FS/scenery/world/scenery/). Two of the three resulting TXT files must be edited as follows: In Airports***.txt insert line VHHX,N22* 19.01',E114* 12.11',0. Optionally remove the existing line containing the VHHH entry. Save the file. In Flightplans***.txt use the Search & Replace function to replace all VHHH instances with VHHX. Save the file and recompile your Traffic BGL. 3. VHHX Kai Tak by Kevin Schlünkes provides Flightplans based on 1998 schedules. This requires that you have AI models from AI Aardvark, Evolve AI, etc. as well as proper repaints and knowledge about editing and compiling Traffic. Whichever option you choose, keep in mind that creating additional schedules for Kai-Tak without redirecting or disabling the existing Chep Lak Kok traffic will result in increased traffic not only in the Hong Kong area but also at other airports around the world. 11

12 FSX MODES The FSX version of Kai-Tak can operate in two different Modes: SDK-Compliant Mode & Non-SDK Mode. The mode is set during installation and can be changed anytime by running the Kai-Tak installation program again. The Non-SDK Mode uses custom ground textures to provide detailed airport pavement, centerlines, markings, stains, skidmarks etc. These items cannot be created using the FSX-SDK and have to rely on FSX s backwards-compatibility to the FS 2002 SDK. This Non-SDK Mode is not compatible with FSX s DirectX-10 Preview and will result in much slower performance depending on your Graphics Card 3D settings. Specifically, you should run the Non-SDK Mode with AA set to Multisampling 4X or 8X. If you use Supersampling or Combined AA modes FSX performance will decrease dramatically when the airport is in view. See the FSX Recommended Settings section. The SDK-Compliance Mode uses FSX s own runway, aprons and taxiway features and is therefore fully FSX-SP2 compliant. This Mode can perform over twice the frames-per-second compared to the Non- SDK mode and features brighter runway lighting. If you run FSX s DirectX-10 Preview you must select the SDK-Compliance Option for the scenery to display properly at night. If you won t be flying into Kai- Tak itself but wish to use Hong Kong as a city scenery, you should also install this mode. Note the Mode selection only affects the airport ground textures. All 3D objects and other features of the Scenery are fully FSX-SP2 Compliant in either mode. 12

13 FSX PERFORMANCE Hong Kong performance varies a lot depending on the options you select during installation as well as your Graphics Card s Settings. The scenery can run as slow as 10 fps with all options checked, while on the same computer it may be setup to run at 30 fps without loosing any of the 3D buildings. As reference, performance at Hong Kong should be higher or at least similar to FSX s default large airports such as KSFO, KSEA, EGLL, EDDF, etc., given the same settings are used. Some of the most performance demanding features have been disabled by default during installation. Namely: Static Aircraft, Animated AI-Ships and Autogen Trees. Additional options that can be unchecked to increase performance are: Animated Vehicles and Fireworks FX. Note that you can run the installation program as often as needed while changing the Install Options to achieve best results. FSX RECOMMENDED SETTINGS Sliders should be within the green marked areas. Red will result in either poor graphics quality or poor performance. It is recommended you use your Graphics Card s Anti-Aliasing setting instead of FSX s ingame Anti-Aliasing, with a setting of Multisampling 4X or 8X. Ground Scenery Shadows is recommended OFF because FSX-SP2 introduces many rendering problems not only in Addon Scenery, but in default Scenery as well when this option is enabled. 13

15 NVIDIA RECOMMENDED SETTINGS If you install Kai-Tak in Non-SDK mode (with custom ground polygons), it is essential that you set Nvidia s Anit-Aliasing to Multisampling using either the Nvidia Control Panel or nhancer. 15

16 KNOWN ISSUES & LIMITATIONS FS2004: Parts of the city buildings disappear when Autogen is set to OFF (slider to the left). FS2004: Scenery objects are not visible when using Top-down view along with certain Camera Zoom factors. FSX: Non-SDK Mode is not compatible with DirectX-10 Preview. You must install the scenery in SDK-Compliance mode if you use DirectX-10 Preview. FSX: Airport pavement is completely dark at night in SDK-Compliance mode. FS2004 & FSX: Because taxiways at Kai-Tak are very tight, large AI aircraft may have their front wheel in the grass deepening on which runway exit is used.
