2 Speculatve Artfcial Intelligence / exp. #1 (audiovisual associaton) diploma exam HGB Leipzig Feb 2018 artistic research material: metal pipes, nylon rope, led-stripes, cables, power supplies, controllers artificial intelligence, neural network, Ableton Live, java In the aesthetic experiment the question of the nature of artificial intelligence in neural networks is investigated. They are credited with intelligent behavior because they can generalize learned rules and apply them to unknown data. The artist Birk Schmithüsen describes the reaction to unknown data as predictable unpredictability. In the experiment, the training process of an artificial neural network as well as the predictable unpredictability are audiovisually translated and intuitively experienced. Sounds are used as input data associated with images as output data. A spherical object makes the sound-image associations visible. The object consists of a seemingly chaotic cluster of thirteen thousand LEDs in which readable patterns of light appear. Each LED is connected to an output neuron of the neural network and represent its state by its brightness. The LEDs are mapped in three-dimensional space. Training data are generated from classifications of sounds to three-dimensional shapes, and the state of the neural network is represented as a readable pattern of light.

3 Interspace Rundgang HGB Leipzig Feb 2017 light object material: led-stripes, cables, power supplies, controllers java, camera calibration The light sculpture consists of a seemingly chaotic cluster in which legible pictures and patterns materialise. 160m pixel LED strips are arranged organically to form a spherical object which is spaced wide enough to see through, so that every dimension of the sphere stays visible from all angles. The installation has randomly assembled pixels that are mapped in the three-dimensional space and are individually controllable. Because of the spatial representation of the pixels in virtual space, it is possible to form threedimensional shapes, patterns and structures out of the chaotic cluster: an apparent intelligence that reveals itself within the seemingly random formation. Inside the sphere, two light entities are dancing with each other, following one choreographic rule: Each entity tries to get as much distance as possible to the other one and to the wall. To decide about its next step, each one has a genetic algorithm evaluating possible options.

Visitors can enter the installation. Every intersection of the LED stripes is linked to a sound. When a light impulse reaches an intersection, it triggers the sound and the pulse is split. A chain reaction of light and sound spreads into the room.

But what if there is also a database, about the personality of each of us? What kind of decisions are made from these data and by whom? Are numbers, charts, list, calculations, big data really that meaningful? What about the parts of us, that nobody can put into data?

Within the development of the series different methods of interrelations are used. It started in the tradition of musicians and visual artist who come together to improvise. In the next part, the video was linked to the sound by algorithms, without human interaction. In the part LiveLooping Experiments #2 both approaches are combined: The video is linked to the sound via algorithms but also shaped by the video artist Felix Richter.
