1 CONTACT INFORMATION Becka Morgan: COURSE DESCRIPTION Computer Science 160 (3 credits): Introduction to the study of computer science. Topics will include: binary and hexadecimal number systems; data representation in binary, including a signed and unsigned fixed and floating point values; pseudo code and algorithm representation using pseudo code; use of a simple machine simulator to understand basic operation of a machine; and an introduction to data structures and object design using pseudo code. The following standards students will know and the assessments and tasks on which they will demonstrate their knowledge in order to earn credit. Module Standards Portfolio/Prompt Work Sample Elements Intro to Big Ideas of --Identify how the Big Ideas Computer Science apply to the modules Internet of Things -Identify how the internet has broadened their world -Explain how they (the student) contribute to the Internet -Demonstrate how the digital divide affects others ability to have these experiences. 1. Identify a culture have you become a part of because of the Internet (a culture you would not have had access to otherwise.) In what ways do you believe this has changes your life perception/connected you to people you would not have known or known of? 2. Explain how you see your contribution to web content (through our use of social media, blogs, and comments) adds to either folklore or the broadening of cultural understanding. Now watch 3. Applying the ideas you used in the previous 2 questions, explain how people who do not have internet may be disadvantaged. Include who is most likely to not have these advantages. 2 Number systems (base 2, 10, and 16) Binary Representation of Data Truth Tables/Logic Gates/Combinatorial Circuits Number System (bas 2, 10, and 16) -Describe the difference between different numbering systems -Convert between different number bases (2 to 10, 10 to 2, etc.) -Match terms related to storage with their definitions -Interpret binary data based on what it is supposed to represent (pixel color or asci text) Logic -Convert a problem into login statements -Evaluate the outcome of a logic statement Gates -Convert a problem into logic gates -Combine logic gates into a circuit -Interpret the outcome of a circuit 1. Make a video, write a song, or write fan fiction that in teaches a 10 year old what base 2 and base 16 number systems are and how they relate to each other and/or base Write a short note in ASCII using Hexadecimal. Translate that note into color swatches. 1. Using at least 3 different gates build a circuit of 4 gates combined (it is not necessary to define the function of this circuit). 3 Computer Architecture -Identify the major components of a CPU and recognize what they do -Explain how the CPU processes a set of instructions -Predict the outcome then process a simple program in machine language by hand -Understand how login gates relate to a CPU 1. Write a program in machine language adds the number one to a total until the total is equal to 5 at which point the machine should halt. Illustrate the step by step running of that program using several copies of the image of a CPU, bus, and memory below. ***A good machine language that can be found online is from the Brookshear s book Computer Science: An Overview Big Data and Information Management -Define Big Data -Identify pros and cons of Big data, Include modern examples -Describe applications of Big Data -Describe ways to secure personal information from being used in big data 1. 4 Encryption and Security -Define encryption, decryption, and key, and their role in computational security -Identify the importance of and current trends in encryption and security -Analyze modern issues surrounding encryption and security -Describe a simple encryption algorithm 1. Create an OpenPGP key and send an encrypted to the instructor. Artificial Intelligence -Define Artificial Intelligence using resources to support their definition -Defend a stance on true artificial intelligence with supporting resources 1. Write a paper that defends whether artificial intelligence can truly exist. This will require a definition of what true artificial intelligence is. Careers in Tech Algorithms -Develop ways to search for jobs in tech -Identifying jobs outside of tech that still need technology skills -Recognize if a set of directions contain all of criteria to be an algorithm -Express an algorithm in Pseudocode -Explain the outcome of a given algorithm 1. Pick a career in technology or an aspect of a career that uses technology and define the education path to achieve that goal 1. Write the Pseudocode for generating the Fibonacci sequence.
