I believe I bought them from Michaels, on a string in their bead department; they were not sold loose in a package. If this is something you cannot locate, you can just use all the same size of the fringe beads across the bottom of the crown. Sorry for any inconvenience. Here is a link to the product on ebay, but these are not the right color. I will show you this so you can see what they look like on the string. / ?pt=Craft_Beads&var= &hash=item3a59fcfb30

Welcome! Fun and Fanciful, will hopefully be your comment about this project once you learn the tricks to making these wonderful miniature crowns. Now, by miniature, I don t mean mini in terms of doll house scale, I mean mini versions of full size crowns we might see on fairy princesses, fantasy warrior heroes or majestic queens! I will demonstrate techniques on two different styles of crowns, but from those basic instructions and suggestions you will be able to go on and use your imagination to create your own versions of mini crowns and tiaras. But please, a word of warning, making these can be addictive! You may find yourself lost in the pages of a gems catalog or an online website that I will share with you. Really. Your imagination might just carry you away. I hope so anyway. Making these crowns is one of the MOST fun parts of the work I do. I hope you ll enjoy it as much as I do! Ready? Ok! Let s get started! 2 2

Getting Started A peek into my world! ;) I thought it would be fun to show you my work space when I am busy working on fairy crowns. I have stuff spread out all over! But you do see the tubes and the cases, everything is sorted and organized so I know where everything is. I suggest you get all your supplies ready and laid out so you can easily access whatever you need. These crowns are tiny about 1 inch in diameter, and the wire is very fine so a magnifier is also helpful if you have one. We ll begin by shaping the main frame wire and then gluing and wiring the components onto that frame. TIP: Something that I found very useful when making these crowns was having a cardboard covered in black velvet. Take a piece of heavy corrugated cardboard and make and sew a sleeve from black velvet to fit it snugly. Slip the cardboard inside and hand stitch the end closed. This helps keep the beads from rolling around and makes things easy to see and to pick up. There are also trays available at bead shops with velux fabric liners. 5

Using the heavy wire, shape as you see here to the left. Then take the two ends and bring them together. Shape around a bottle cap or other round item, about an inch or so in diameter. Use your pliers to twist the ends tightly. This gives you two round wires as your base structure and this will also give you a strong foundation wire on which to build the crown. Cut the ends off, leaving about 3/8 (9.525 mm) of twisted wire. The bottle cap will give you a nice round shape and the twisting of the ends makes it a snug fit. After cutting the ends, bend that twisted wire up at a right angle to the base wires. This will form the back support foundation for the center filigree. 6

Main Frame Structure The whole technique for making this style crown is to use both glue and wire to secure the components to the main frame wire structure. To begin, wrap the end of the 28 ga wire onto the main frame. You may start from the right, or left, it doesn t matter. After anchoring the wire onto the main frame, apply some Gem Tac glue to the twisted extension, then place the filigree against it. TIP: As you can see in this photo, I have placed this face down on a business card and taped the pieces down. This holds it all together so the glue can dry. Allow the glue to dry completely. After the filigree is in place, go across it with the wire and then twist on the other side once again, this attaches the filigree to the main frame. You can go back across it once again to make sure it s secure. 7

In these photos you can see the wire that goes across the first filigree. This will be covered up later. Next we will wire the smaller filigree pieces in place. First, I apply a coating of glue, then position the filigree pieces on the main frame, and twist the fine wire around the ends to secure onto the main frame. If you want to, you can thread the wire through the holes on the filigree, where appropriate. This will assure they will be held tight. Arrange the filigrees on the main frame, and keep the spacing uniform from right to left. They will wiggle back and forth, (like loose teeth) :) but we ll fix this in a few moments. 8

Next we attach the connectors. Two of them together give the effect of a forehead band. First check for position by holding the connector up to the center filigree, and measure back to see where it will attach to the side of the main frame. Wrap a fine piece of wire onto the main frame and secure it in place by wrapping it a few times. Then thread the end through the hole in the connector, and wire it in place. Wrap the wire on the main frame once again, this anchors that end of the connector onto the main frame. Take a short piece of fine wire and anchor it to the other end of the connector, twist the end and trim excess. Then wrap that wire around the end of the center filigree to hold it securely to the center of the crown. Now you can repeat the steps in reverse, and attach the other connector, using that wire you just wrapped around the center filigree to anchor the other connector in place. 9

Making it Secure In this close up photo you can see the wires wrapped around the center filigree as well as through the holes of the connectors. They are anchored on the sides of the main frame also. Once everything is secure, wrap the ends of the wire tightly and trim all the ends. Next, using the glitter paint, coat the whole inside of the crown, covering all the wrapped wires. Also, everywhere you put glue, cover that with the glitter paint also. It works so well to hold the parts secure. Love it!! In this photo you can see the all the brass filigree pieces wired to the main frame. Next we ll take a few steps to make sure everything is held securely. NOTE: In this photo, I have used a scrap of wire and threaded it through the tops of the filigree pieces, lining them up and trying to keep them straight. This will hold everything secure while the glitter paint dries. Glitter paint is just the most amazing product. I don t think I have ever used it as it was intended, and that is to do dimensional painting on clothing. No, it is strong and flexible and so great for uses like this! Plus, it s pretty! 10

Adding Chains Adding the chains is optional, but if you do decide to add them, cut two of each length. For this example, the first pieces were about 2.5 long, (63.50 mm) and each set was progressively shorter. ( 2.5, 2, 1.5 ) 2 each After the glitter paint is completely dry, wind a piece of thin wire around the main frame, and then capture the end of each of the chain pieces as you work your way, wrapping wire along the side of the crown. See the photo to the left. Repeat for the other side. 11

Here you see the chains anchored onto each side of the crown. You may wish to cover these wires with more glitter paint. Because the center filigree Neo Drop was antiqued and the other pieces were shiny brass, I will use some acrylic paint to dull the finish on the shiny pieces. Simply brush some black acrylic paint on the brass, front and back, and while the paint is still wet, wipe gently with a tissue to remove most of the paint. See below, left. Looks better, doesn t it! You may want to seal this with gloss glaze now to protect the surface of the brass. NOTE: Gem Tac glue. It is awesome. I will confess, I made this crown the first time and used Ultimate glue. Then I decided to add the chains as an afterthought. As I was attaching the chains, the gems I had glued on came right off again. I knew better, Gem Tac is made for gems. It holds like crazy, even on metal. I highly recommend it! 12

Adding Gems Now for the fun part! Gluing the gems onto the crown is fun and a matter of personal taste, how much or how little you use, or what colors. Or no color! You get to choose. Place a dot of Gem Tac glue on a piece of paper (I use old business cards) and apply the dots of glue with a toothpick. TIP: You might think super glue would be good to use for placing the gems. Not so. Super glue contains chemicals that will cause a halo effect or chalky surface to develop on the gems. This takes away all the shine. Please stay with white glues. For the heavier gems, in this case the colored cabochons, I will apply a bit more glue. But as I mentioned before, the Gem Tac glue holds extremely well, so just make sure the gem and the brass have a good contact. Then, using the tip of the toothpick to place tiny dots of glue, you can then position the rhinestones. You can follow my arrangement here, or come up with your own. That s the fun part, being completely creative! More about this next week. I apply the Gem Tac glue with a toothpick, working ahead about 6 spots. I will allow this to skin over 13 very slightly and then press the gems into the glue. By doing it this way; by only applying a few spots ahead, your glue won t dry out and will still be tacky enough to hold the gem. 13

Just for Fun Now! In the next few pages I will show you some additional examples of other crowns, using different brass filigree stampings. Below you will see the two examples of brass stampings used in this crown. It s almost as though you can t recognize them! But it s true, these two designs together make up this ornate crown! All the techniques are the same; wire wrapped onto the main frame to hold the pieces in place and gems glued to the filigree pieces. 14

More Styles Zena the Princess Warrior might have worn something like this! Quite simple really three pieces of brass attached to the main frame. Gems glued in place. TIP: Naturally the brass stamping pieces are flat and our crowns are curved. Using a pliers, or two pliers, gently bend the pieces until they form the curve needed to match the curve of the main frame wire. Something a little different on this crown, strands of seed bead drapes were added to the front of the crown. Fine wire was used for this step; wrapped around the main frame to anchor them in place. 15

Next Week Next week we will finish the embellishing on our Renaissance crown and then move on to a Swarovski rhinestone and crystal tiara. Certainly something fit for a Queen! 21 We re Back! Fun and Fanciful, is still the order of the day as this week we ll take it a step further and create a lovely miniature Swarovski crystal and rhinestone tiara. It s fairly simple and straight forward, and the steps will lead you to many new exciting ideas to come.! 2 2

Supplies For the crown featured above, the components are shown in the photo above. Enlarge the page to see better detail. They include: Swarovski Crystals: I used all AB (Aurora Borealis) Crystals and rhinestones 1- cube crystal bead, 4-6mm, 1-9x6mm teardrop bead, 4- bicone crystal beads, 6mm, 2- bicone crystal beads, 4mm, 2- round crystal beads, 4mm, 2 round crystal beads, 3mm. (or you may use 3mm or 4mm round beads for both) 13 small fringe beads, 3 large fringe beads. Silver lined seed beads 15/0 or 11/0 (I use 15/0 Rochelle beads) 13 ss9 flatback rhinestones, 2 ss16 flatback rhinestones 8 silver wire 20 ga or similar 36 silver wire 28 or 30 ga or similar 12 silver wire 30 or 32 ga for fringe edge These crystals are just suggestions, you may use whatever you wish! 23 Finishing the Gems Back to our Renaissance Crown for a few more steps. When we left off last week, we were placing the Czech Cabochons in place. We can also begin to place the rhinestones on the crown. The holes that are part of the connector pieces would be the first spots to place rhinestones. Again, using a toothpick with just a dot of glue, work ahead about 6 spots, then use the forceps or tweezers to place the gems. You may add as many or as few stones as you wish. To create a line of gems, just place a row of tiny dots of glue, then put the rhinestones in place and adjust for alignment. The glue sets up fairly quickly and it dries clear. It holds gems and stones better than any other glue I have tried so I can t recommend it highly enough. Plus, Gem Tac glue lasts a long time in the bottle so one bottle will go a long way for you. :) 4

When the glue is dry, finish the back of the crown with glitter paint where the stones were placed. You can see in this photo that I am putting another coating over the wires that attached the chains in Session 1. Below, little dots of glitter paint are placed on the backs of the filigree connectors, where the gems are placed, this gives the back a nice finish also. If you wanted to double up the gems, you could place rhinestones on the back side of the filigree too. Above, a Renaissance Princess models the crown for you and with her long dark curls, the chains show up as they are intended, as adornments for hair. You could add several chains all along the back of the crown; make the design your own. Next, we ll move on and create a rhinestone tiara! 5

It s as Simple as 1-2-3! TIP: Measuring and twisting is a guessing game until you get an idea of how much wire is used up with the twisting technique. Begin with the 20 ga wire, about 8. Our first steps are to create the Bezel cups. These will hold the rhinestones. Normally a bezel has an edge that overlaps the gem, in this case we are just creating the backing to hold the gem. Anchor the 28 or 30 ga wire to the main frame wire. For a Tiara, this main wire is called the band, or circlet. I ll call it the band. So anchor the fine wire to the band by wrapping it a couple times. Then bring the wire up, about 1/2 (12.70 mm) and make a loop. Bring the wire back down and twist it around the band again. I wind about 4 times between each bezel. To form the actual bezel, insert a darning needle or a knitting needle into the loop and twist. This twists the wires and makes a nice uniform bezel stand. I will repeat these steps for the next bezel, making the next one slightly shorter. As I mentioned above, this is a bit of a guessing game, how tall or how short to make them. It comes with practice 6

Bezel Cups The next one is twisted in the same manner, only as you can see, it is shorter. I will once again wrap the wire onto the band and make the next bezel, a little taller this time. Continue doing this until you have 7 bezels on this side. The three bezels closest to the center are each progressively taller, this is building up to the center spike which frames it in nicely. More about this on the next page. TIP: These bezels will just serve as a holder/stand for the rhinestones, they don t actually have a built up edge like a real bezel has. 7

Spike No, that s not the name of my dog! ;) The spike, or center design, I call it a tower is the next step. For this, extend the wire out and arrange the crystals on the wire in the order you see here. Two small seed beads, then the crystals, then the teardrop. After they are all in place, put another seed bead on the wire... Then thread the end of the wire back down through all the crystals again. It will be a snug fit, but the wire will fit. 28 ga wire doubled is about as heavy a wire as you will get to fit through these crystals. 30 ga wire will fit more easily, but the 28 ga wire is stronger and will hold this element more erect and sturdy. In the photo above, you can see the end of the wire coming through the bead, you might have to get a hold of this with a pliers and pull it through. Easy does it, though, you don t want to crack the crystals. Feed the wire all the way back down to the band wire. Give it a good tug with the pliers to snug up all the crystals. The single seed bead will keep the wire from going back down through the spike. Wrap this around the band wire again. 8

Building the Design Here you can see the complete design including the configuration of the center spike. 2 seed beads, round, seed bead, bicone, cube, bicone, seed bead, round, teardrop, seed bead. You ll notice 7 bezels on one side and 8 on the other. This is if you decide to make the tiara a circlet, as in a complete circle; you will have an odd number of bezels. If you plan to make it like a headband, then you will make the same number on each side so it will be balanced. Twisting the wires and getting everything even is hard to do, but just do your best. If the bezel wires end up bent, you can straighten them with the pliers. You can see mine isn t perfect by any means, but once the crown is done, small imperfections won t show that much. Keeping the wires you wrap on the band tight is helpful. Also, don t overlap those wound wires if you can help it, I will explain why next. NOTE: Always twist in the same direction when you re making the bezels. So always twist the needle away from yourself, or toward yourself, it just makes it look neater. 9

The Fringe Now we will add the beaded fringe, spacing the fringe beads out with seed beads. This time we re using the fine weight wire, either 30 or 32 ga wire. Once again, anchor the wire on the band wire. Then thread one seed bead, one fringe bead and another seed bead. Bring them up tight against the band wire and wind the wire on the band wire. Continue doing this between each of the bezels. The reason for the extra winding of the wire on the main band wire, this gives you some stretch in the design. You can slide the bezels farther apart, the wound wire allows for this, and then you can slide them back together again. So while adding the fringe, it s easier if you stretch the design out a little bit. Each fringe segment is added, and they are spaced between the bezels. When you get to the center spike, you can switch to a larger fringe bead if you have them. In this case, I used 3 larger beads there. 10

Here you see all of the fringe beads added. Next I ll show you one way to add a bead to the bezel wire. First, using a pliers, I will gently close the bezel loop down. This will allow it to fit through a bead. Fit a 6 mm bicone bead down onto the wire, sliding it all the way down to the base. Add a dot of glue to the wires, then slide the crystal bicone bead back up so it makes contact with the glue. Repeat this for the bezel on the opposite side of the design. Thank goodness the glue dries clear, huh. ;) 11

Adding Rhinestones Repeat these same steps for the rest of the bezels where you wish to add beads to the standing wires. There are other ways to do this, as is explained in the tip box below. But this method works well and it allows you to design as you go, you really don t need to plan ahead. Now we ll need to open those pinched bezel loops up again. Using a sharper needle tool, I insert the needle into the pinched loop. Once you get that opened a little bit, you can insert the same needle tool you used to shape the loop in the first place, and coax it open again! Good as new. Next, using a toothpick and Gem Tac glue, apply a dot of glue to each bezel loop, working ahead about 6 spots. Then set the rhinestones on the bezel and gently touch into place. TIP: You could thread the crystal bead onto the wire as you shape each bezel. You would put the bead on, then make the loop, then twist. In twisting, you would position the bead where you want it on the upright wires. However, this places one wire outside the bead and one through the bead. I prefer to glue the crystal bead on the wire after. I apply the Gem Tac glue with a toothpick, working ahead about 6 spots. I will allow this to skin over 12 very slightly and then press the gems into the glue. By doing it this way; by only applying a few spots ahead, your glue won t dry out and will still be sticky enough to hold the gem. 13

Setting the Stones Once again, each rhinestone is placed in the glue and lightly touched down into the glue. Next, I will apply a coating of the Glitter Paint to each wire, the band and all the wound wires, and also to the back of each rhinestone. This gives the back of the tiara a nice, finished look. You could add a matching sized rhinestone to the back side of each bezel if you wanted to. The glue would hold both stones. And it is certainly pretty! But it does double the amount of rhinestones you use, so that increases the cost. But it certainly looks nice to do that. The glitter paint dries translucent with the glitter suspension so that too gives a nice finish. It s up to you, remember you re the designer! :) 13

Finishing Touches TIP: Finishing your tiara with the glitter paint is both attractive and strong! This product is actually a glue. If you have trouble applying it, use a toothpick to get it into the small spots. In these photos you get a better glimpse of the glitter paint being added to each wire, as well as the whole inside frame of the tiara. This also coats all those wound wires on the main band wire so they don t show anymore. Notice the glitter paint on the bezels with the bicone beads, this too will help hold those beads in place. Try not to get the glitter paint on the beads, only apply it to the wires. 14

Finishing Touches Final steps. You will need to decide if your tiara will be a circlet or a headband. If you want it to be a circlet, measure the tiara around something (close to the size of the head of your sculpt) so you know that the size will be right for the doll you wish to use it on. Bring the two wires together in the back and wrap one around the other, trim the extra wire off. Coat this joint with more glitter paint to hide the join. Or if you want it to be like a headband, cut the excess length of wire off as you see in the first photo above. Then, using a needle nose that wire. Repeat on the around the bottle cap for a coat those two end loops with leave them open and use the to your sculpt s hair. Either all done. Let everything dry tempted to play with your pliers, make a loop from other side, then bend nice round shape. Then glitter paint also, or you can loops for stitching the tiara way is fine! That s it, you re completely before being new tiara! 15

Class Review Here are the crowns we ve covered, plus a couple that you didn t see! But knowing what you know now, you can make any style you like. Just have fun looking at the brass stampings or filigree findings in your local bead shop or other online source. Let your imagination take over! Have fun, I know I sure did!
