5 wax carving tips Don t Let Custom Work Opportunities Melt Away service and skill are what separate real jewelers from nonjewlers. There is no limit to what a determined jeweler can do with a tube or block of wax. Speed is key to ensure profit, but never at the expense of quality. While a stone setter s objective is aesthetic in nature, a wax carver additionally must consider functionality, castability, weight, stone size and spacing precision. Functionality -Will the cast piece hang correctly, will the bangle hinge work, will the ring fit on the finger? Castability Wall thicknesses must not be too thin (.80mm is the min. acceptable thickness at Stuller). Proper spruing is critical. Weight How heavy will the cast piece be? (Refer to the weight conversion chart on pg.198 of The Metals Book.) Stone Size and Spacing Precision After all the work, it would be a shame if the stones did not fit. With these in mind, your customer is assured of a quality piece of jewelry that will mean the world to them. Here are a few tricks that work for me: Prong work Use monofilament fishing string to make small prongs. Using a drill bit equal to or slightly larger than the diameter of the fishing string, make a hole where the prong should go. Insert the string. Usually the tension exerted by the tight fit will hold the string in place. Cut the string to length, and slightly touch the tip of the new prong with your wax pen to round it off. The monofilament string will melt and vaporize during the burnout process. Speaker Wire Splice an old speaker wire and remove about four inches of copper strand. Now wrap it onto the tip of your wax pen and let about a quarter of an inch of the copper strand extend past the end of the pen. Now you have a wax pen capable of doing extremely fine work with inlay work and sealing prongs. Stuller s extraordinary wax carver, Mike Goin, taught me this one (and I owe him for it). Scroll Trick I use this technique in hollow areas with scrollwork. Once a recessed area is hollowed, I back fill it with a little casting investment. Once it sets up, I draw my scrollwork in pencil on the investment. Next, I use a round graver, like a #50, and grave out the pencil lines. This gives me a concave slot to add inlay wax with my fine tipped wax pen. Once the scroll pattern is inlaid, I put the wax carving into an unheated ultrasonic to remove investment. Voila intricate scroll work. Recommended tools, waxes and books: You will want to have a Double End Swiss Wax File , a single cut rotary file such a and the Wolf tools. As in all jewelry disciplines, wax carving is its own science. There is ample opportunity for those who spend the time developing their skills.
