30 UV Curing Adhesives Modern technology made the development of adhesives possible which just a few years earlier nobody would have dreamt of. Originally developed as a cast material for the electronic industry, UV curing adhesives were found to be suitable for durable, stable bonds of many different materials such as glass-glass oder glass-metal. For this purpose, Bohle developed a large range of UV adhesives and is today known as the technology leader also in the field of glass bonding. Hazardous Goods Products may have to be declared as "hazardous" depending on the version, mode of transportation and destination - please ask your contact person for details. UV Adhesive Bohle B Lamifix UV Adhesive B This UV-curing adhesive is crystal clear and has medium viscosity. It shows good capillary properties with glass up to 6 mm. Due to its elasticity, this adhesive is ideal for bonding many different material combinations. It also has the capacity to absorb vibrations in the bonding joint. Especially interesting, however, is its suitability for bonding laminated safety glass, where the PVB film absorbs much of the UVA radiation. Because this adhesive has the ability to cure with just daylight, it reacts with less intensive radiation. This UV-curing adhesive is crystal clear, has medium viscosity and shows good capillary properties with glass up to 6 mm. Due to its elasticity, this adhesive is ideal for bonding many different material combinations and for surface bonding up to 1 m². Especially worth mentioning is its good moisture resistance. When bonding thermoplastics you should always do intensive testing first because not all thermoplastics can be bonded without problems. The adhesive s low viscosity makes time-consuming reworking unnecessary, so that it can be applied rapidly and most economically. As not all thermoplastics can be bonded, prior trials are always recommended when working with these materials. The adhesive B-682-T also reacts without UV exposure when used with Bohle UV- Activator LF ( BO /BO ) (e.g. for coloured glass, metal/metal bonds, etc.). When activator is used, slight yellowing of the bond can occur. 32 Verifix UV Adhesive LV 740VIS UV Adhesive Set This new UVA / daylight curing adhesive Verifix LV 740VIS is a low-viscosity adhesive and, due to its excellent capillary action, is ideal for bonding glass constructions that are subject to static as well as dynamic loads. Reduced clean-up time means that production cycles can be done quickly and efficiently. It is especially characterised by its high bonding strength coupled with good elasticity. Its special composition makes Verifix LV 740VIS particularly suitable for bonding laminated glass to laminated glass. The PVB film absorbs almost all of the UVA radiation. Because this adhesive is made to also cure by daylight, it reacts with the remaining radiation (above 380nm) and cures. It has exceptional clarity, long-term resistance to yellowing as well as high resistance to humidity. 38 Instructions for Use for Glass Bonding with UV-Curing Adhesives 1. Material Selection (check suitablility of adhesive): The choice of glass you plan to use and the adhesive appropriate for that glass (see item 3 below) results in different bond strengths. Technical data about strength, etc. can be found in the preceding table. The indications refer to transparent, UVA light-permeable float glass. Clear float glass, mirrors (front side) tempered glass and smooth, flat wired glass can be bonded without problems. Special glass may lead to lower strength values or cannot be bonded at all. Problematic is all structured glass, like patterned glass or wired glass. The UVA light permeability depends on the glass thickness and the colour intensity of the glass. Please note: Glass with high UV absorption like laminated glass or coloured glass cannot be bonded with common UV adhesives. For these applications, only the highly sensitive Bohle adhesives Verifix HV 770 or Lamifix are suitable. Tip: When bonding glass to metal, it has been determined by comprehensive series of tests that stainless steel is an especially suitable material. 2. Preparing the Bonding Surfaces 2.1. Cleaning Bonding surfaces must be absolutely clean, free of grease and dry (free of separating agents). Use appropriate cleaners when UV bonding (without tensides or separating agents). Common glass cleaners are not suitable in most cases! Recommended: Bohle special cleaner BO Warming Adhesive as well as parts to be bonded must be at room temperature. In order to obtain a durably stable bond, it is essential to heat parts prior to bonding in order to remove any possibly non-visible condensate. All bonding parts must be slowly and evenly heated to avoid any tension build-up in the later bond. Temperature: approx. 30 C above room temperature Use hot air unit or blow dryer. Disregarding any of these recommendations may lead to considerable loss of strength, in some cases not immediately noticeable Pyrosil Surface Pre-treatment The additional pre-treatment of problematic surfaces with the PYROSIL technology results in durably higher adhesion as well as better resistance to moisture infiltration of the bond. This is especially important for high load-bearing bonds. 3. Choosing the Right Adhesive Depending on the requirement of the bonding materials, applicable loads, and intentions of use of the finished object, different Bohle UV-curing adhesives are available for your tests. Remember: Glass/metal bonds: For bonds subject to dynamic loads, only medium viscous Bohle UV adhesive B 682-T or Verifix MV 760 should be used. Glass/glass bonds: When planning an all-glass construction, a closed (i.e. self-stabilising) construction should always be strived for in order to obtain the highest possible stability (see illustrations). Elastic adhesives such as B and B are only suitable for closed constructions. Should design reasons ask for an open construction or can a closed construction not be realized for other reasons, only adhesives Verifix LV 740, B 665-0, Verifix HV 770, Verifix MV 760 or B 682-T must be used. 39 4. Positioning Aids For optimum curing of the UV adhesive, it it essential to prevent bonding parts from sliding out of place. Nevertheless, bonding parts should be fixed in position and not jammed tightly against each other. This task is considerably facilitated by using suitable positioning devices of the Verifix product range. Your technical advisor can give you detailed information. 5. Application of Adhesive Before applying the adhesive, it is recommended to check if bonding parts fit in their intended position. This is best done by first building the complete construction without bonding (using positioning devices). The adhesive should be applied within 5 minutes after having heated the parts. Should a longer period have passed, the parts should be heated again. Bonding should preferably be executed in horizontal position; vertical application of the adhesive may lead to problems. Too much adhesive increases the workload for removing excess adhesive. If the layer is too thick, the strength of the bond is reduced. Dispensing systems allow a precise and economic application of the adhesive. 5.1 Adhesive Application BEFORE Joining the Parts Medium / high viscosity adhesive (Verifix MV 760, Verifix HV 770 and B 682-T) is always applied in the shape of a caterpillar before joining the parts. When bonding surfaces, the adhesive is always applied before joining the parts. When bonding horizontally, the bonding parts should be evenly and carefully lowered to avoid trapping any air bubbles. The weight of the bonding parts is sufficient to evenly spread the adhesive over the complete bonding area. 5.2 Adhesive Application AFTER Joining the Parts Low viscosity adhesive (Verifix LV 740 and B-665-0), uses capillary action to seep into the bondline gap by itself. Therefore the bonding parts can be joined before applying the adhesive. Do not work on several parts at the same time, but build the object one step at a time. To achieve an optimum distribution of adhesive over the whole bonding surface, the parts should be slightly lifted and lowered again (enlarging and decreasing the bondline gap) before curing. 6. Curing (Exposure to UV Light) Curing the bonding connection is done in two steps: 1. By pre-curing a working strength (approx. 30 % of the final strength) is achieved. At this stage, excess adhesive outside the bonding surface can easily be removed. 2. After final curing, the bond is fully functional and can be put under load (after 24 h waiting period). Use suitable UV lamp: The lamp should not be shorter/smaller than the bonding edge to avoid build-up of tensions due to uneven curing. Position lamp as close as possible to the bonding surface during curing. Never move parts during curing process and do not expose to vibrations (use positioning aids). Pre-curing takes between 10 seconds to approx. 2 minutes, depending on type and efficiency of the lamp. Remove any positioning devices and clean the object of any adhesive residues (Bohle special cleaner, glass scraper or steel wool fineness 00). End-curing the bond: expose from 60 seconds to approx. 5 minutes, depending on the type of lamp. Exposing the bond for a longer time has no negative or positive affects on the bond. All Bohle UV lamps are equipped with UV filters to avoid any damage to eyes and skin. For your own safety, you should use additional appropriate protection, for example, BO protective glasses with UV filter and BO disposable gloves. (Using appropriate protection when working with UV lamps is recommended by the Trade Association). 7. Test Bonding If you are uncertain of ideal bonding conditions, always make trial bonds: Bond parts according to above instructions. Test strength of the bond by subjecting it to stresses exceeding those it would normally be exposed to, e.g. impacts, tilting or sudden movements. If necessary use tools like pliers etc. If possible, put under load until parts disconnect or break in order to determine the load limit.
