The Rotary Club of Foothill-Highlands awarded scholarships to twenty students from area schools. Each student was given a framed certificate and presented with a check for $500. This was the third group. Rotary Club Booth at Antelope High School Club Rush Week, with Rotarian Gene Long and daughter. Gene reported that he had 35 prospects for the school Interact Club.

Leading us in the pledge was PP Patrick Magnani and President Rich Ryan provided the invocation. Richard Hansen w as the note taker. VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS Scholarship recipients Today we hosted the third group of Scholarship recipients joined by family and friends. They were Maria Ramos, Jolie Tcha and Gitzelle Mendoza. Also joining us was our speaker Eric Momsen a financial professional at Franklin/ Templeton and guest of PP Patrick Magnani. Next Mondays Meeting Meet the Assembly Candidates Steve Cohn and Kevin McCarty The Rotary Club invites you to lunch and to meet the candidates for the State of California Assembly District 7 seat. We are honored to host the Assembly candidates to meet the business leaders in the North Highlands area. 3 THE HIGHLANDER Page 3 9/8/2014 ANNOUNCEMENTS (CONTINUED) The Rotary Foundation PP Maureen McBride rem inded everyone the annual District 5180 Foundation Dinner is scheduled for Saturday, November 1st at the Doubletree Hotel, Sacramento. The keynote speaker is Wyn Spiller, who is the Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator for Zones 25 and 26. The cost is $55 per person. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. with no host cocktails and silent auction followed at 7:00 p.m. with dinner and the program. The club has reserved a table of ten and there are three spaces still available. If interested in attending, please contact Mo. With regard to Foundation Giving for the Rotary year, our goal is to be designated an EREY Club. EREY is an acronym for Every Rotarian/Every Year which means all members make a contribution of $100 to The Rotary Foundation. President Rich encourages everyone to consider helping us reach our goal. End Polio Now Campaign Mo rem inded everyone the End Polio Now banks will continue to be on the tables at our weekly meetings. The eradication of polio is still a TOP PRIORITY for Rotary and we can t stop until our job is done. Mo asked that we empty our pockets of spare change to make a significant change. Our goal for the Rotary year is $500. Thanks to everyone who is helping us meet our goal. END POLIO NOW Pin For a special opportunity, anyone who writes a check for $25 payable to The Rotary Foundation and earmarks it for Polio Plus, will receive a special END POLIO NOW pin. Rio Linda Country Faire PP Patrick Magnani needs help with a booth for Rotary at the Rio Linda Country Faire Car Show, sponsored by the Rio Linda Lions Club. The Show is in the Rio Linda Library parking lot, 631 L Street in Rio Linda on Saturday September 13th, from 8:30am - 4:00pm. E-Waste4Good Program You can bring anything, anytime to Umpqua Bank or PP Dominic Mecklenburg is happy to collect your electronic junk on Mondays at our regular meetings. If you would like to schedule a pickup at your home or office location, just let him know! Holiday Wreaths are coming! PP Dominic Mecklenburg has received the information on the Holiday Wreaths and will have it available soon. I did not see any hands. Fine Master David then asked if any Rotarians birthdays or anniversary's. Gene Long had a w edding anniversary, he spun the wheel for a $9. President Rich Ryan had a Club anniversary he spun a 2, all Rotarians paid $2. PP Bob Spears had a Club anniversary he spun a $3. It has been 33 years, he asked President Rich w hy he has not received a 33 year pin. No answer. ROTARY FOUNDATION BENEFACTORS JOKES PP Bob Spears had a true story (joke?) today. He received a fine free pass. President Rich then told a real true story. Each additional $1,000 contribution is recognized with a plus and the number. The Rotary Club of Fort Smith, Arkansas, USA, sponsored a float in a 1924 Loyalty The history of Rotary's work with youth dates back to the 1920s, when many clubs took part in an international event known as Boys' Week. The first Boys' Week was held in New York City in May 1920 by the Rotary Club of New York and other local organizations. The event was part of an effort to promote youth development in the areas of education, citizenship, health and hygiene, and vocation. New York club members reported on the success of Boys' Week at the 1920 Rotary convention, hoping that it would become part of the Boys' Work program, which Rotary had established several years earlier with the creation of the Committee on Work among the Boys (later known as the Boys' Work Committee). The program encouraged Rotary clubs to work with other community initiatives and organizations to counter juvenile delinquency, truancy, and poor physical health, with the goal of developing good citizens. Boys' Week events quickly spread throughout the world. By the mid-1920s, they were being held in almost 600 locations across 25 countries. In 1928, the number of participating cities and towns had grown to about 3,000. Rotary News

Eric Momsen is a vice president and senior advisor consultant representing Franklin Templeton in northern Nevada and northeast California. Eric supports financial advisors and their clients in their pursuit to reach their long-term investment goals. He began his career in the financial services industry when he joined Franklin Templeton Investment in As an advisor to the advisor, Eric is a resource for all of Franklin Templeton s investment solutions, including mutual funds, separately managed accounts, 529 plans and insurance products. Eric is a FINRA registered representative, Certified Investment Management Analyst designee and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professional. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics from University of California and currently resides in Folsom, California with his wife, Shannon, and two daughters, Skylar and Sienna. President Rich and Eric Momsen As is the usual custom, President Rich presented Eric with a Rotary gift in gratitude for his informative presentation. Then, President Rich asked us to raise our glasses and join him in a toast to Rotary Around the World. The meeting was adjourned. Eric began w ith an overview of the economy and a little bit about the stock market and quantitative easing. He asked if anyone could tell him how well the stock market did last year? The answers were very well last year and better this year. Eric then explained the basics of how the stock market works and how as a small investor you can protect your money. He then took questions from the Rotarians.
