6 #6 BULLETIN MECHANICAL SERVICE CONTRACTORS OF CANADA Dear fellow member, The Mechanical Service Contractors of Canada (MSCC) continues to grow both its membership and its programs and services. In today s more challenging work environment, what has worked in the past may not be enough to stay ahead today. By taking advantage of the expanding educational offerings, business management tools and best business practices available through MSCC, you will gain additional knowledge and skills essential for success today, and into the future. We are pleased to say that even during the ongoing economic climate, we have once again increased our membership by 15% so that now it now stands at 120 members nation-wide. To assist our new and existing members, we have added 4 new educational courses: a 1-day Marketing Your Service Business program delivered by Ron Coleman; a 1-day program on Carbon Monoxide by Rick Finley; a 1-day Planning, Goal Setting and Performance Improvement course presented by Kevin Dougherty; and a 2-day course on Growing and Developing Service Supervisors again by Kevin Dougherty. During our 3 rd One-Day Forum for Service Contractors, held this September in Halifax, Nova Scotia, MSCC Certification Committee Chairman, Scott Grobel, announced the launch of our all-new National Certification Program. This initiative is the culmination of several years working with representatives from the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) and MSCC member contractors. The two certification programs will be closely aligned. The first is a contractor company program, MSCC Certified Contractor and the second is an individual program, MSCC Certified Technician. The MSCC Certified Contractor designation is a company-wide certification which demonstrates that a firm deploys industry-leading practices in key competencies such as safety, training and customer service. To qualify, companies must be MSCC members, have been in the mechanical service industry for a minimum of three years, employ a certain percentage of MSCC certified technicians and maintain and enforce a comprehensive safety program. Firms must also provide ongoing training for both field and in-house employees, have an established truck inventory control system and major tool inventory program, issue photo ID cards for technicians and have an established customer service program. The MSCC Technicians Certification is for individuals who must be employed by a MSCC member company, meet certain minimum requirements with respect to training, experience and education and pass a written exam. Beta testing is expected to be complete in early December and the formal launch is scheduled for January 15, Criteria for both levels and beta testing applications are available on the MSCC website at As always, I encourage you to become an active participant in the Mechanical Service Contractors of Canada as we develop this national organization together. 8 #8 BULLETIN 69 th ANNUAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE A HUGE HIT September th, This year s national conference was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia and what a great time!!! More than 320 delegates travelled to the Halifax Harbourfront to enjoy a unique and exciting program at the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada s 2010 Annual National Conference The Gathering of the MCA Clans! MCA Canada s Board of Directors were joined by the regional, provincial and national MCA managers for several days of high level meetings. The Conference Committee met on Sunday (September 19) and the next day the Managers Council met, as well as, your MCA Canada Executive Committee. Tuesday, the standing Committees met followed by the National Board of Directors Meeting and the CMCEF Annual General Meeting. Wednesday, the Mechanical Service Contractors of Canada Executive met and CMCEF s Board of Trustees met. These meetings finished in plenty of time to kick off the National Conference Opening Event. Highlights from these meetings will be featured in future editions of Just The Fax. Kicking things off was the First-Timers Reception, where an amazing 66 first-time delegates met and were welcomed to the conference. The new delegates and their hosts then made their way to the Opening Social Reception where all the delegates enjoyed some down home music, plenty of good cheer and a few English Dragoon s were spotted in the crowd. Once the piper and drummer arrived, everyone was piped into the ballroom for a full-on... Battle of the MCA Clans! Delegates were welcomed by a battle dressed Robert William Wallace Braveheart MacHoare (aka MCAC Chairman Bob Hoare) who opened the contest in his customized Braveheart outfit and makeup. What a sight! Delegates donned their battle gear - clan shirts, kilts and tam s separated into their own clan of 10 and once the feast of roast chicken was over, the battles began. Each Clan competed in 11 events including: sheep shearing, highland dancing, golf, sheep tossing and more. The winning clan, the Newland Clan, claimed their prize of a new Wii Game Console for each clansmen, at the Mechanical Contractors Network Awards Breakfast. It was quite a night and everyone had a great, great time! The next morning featured our keynote speaker and author, Gordon Graham. Over breakfast, his personal tale of re-invention was really something to hear. After years in some of the toughest prisons in the United States, his re-birth led him to become an internationally recognized speaker and champion for change both in and out of the penal systems.

9 BULLETIN #9 After some exceptional educational content focusing on Hiring Smart and How to Manage, and Manage To Expectations, delegates took the afternoon off to explore Halifax before returning to enjoy a good, old fashioned lobster feast and afterparty at Pier 21 Canada s Immigration Museum. Pier 21 is a showcase of Canada s immigration as it welcomed over 1.5 million settlers between 1928 and The historic surroundings, all you can eat lobster and down home entertainment by Bob Lambert, following by Acadian Driftwood was pure Maritime fun for everyone. Before you knew it, breakfast was served along with the highly successful Supplier Innovation Showcase featuring the latest in innovative new products and services. MCA Canada s Annual General Meeting was held after breakfast while the companions worked on their fitness with a Zumba workout which fuses Latin rhythms and low impact moves. Friday afternoon we hit the links at Granite Springs Golf Club for the 6 th Annual John Bradshaw Memorial Tournament. Congratulations to all the winners as they played in the cool, coastal conditions and came home smiling. For the second year, we hosted the Mechanical Contractors Network Awards Breakfast, but this time it had a Maritime theme. Anchormen Hughie MacDonald (James Derksen) and Angus Campbell (Brad Diggens) hosted the ceremony with plenty of laughs, special correspondent s Jack Bavis (Newfoundland), Tim Meadows (Ontario) and Bill Dixon (New Brunswick). We are very pleased to announce that the Lloyd MacLean Memorial Award, for unselfishly giving to the national association was awarded to Mr. Terry Billings. The first ever Doug Crawford Memorial Award, which recognizes an individual, individuals or company who has made a significant contribution to MCA Canada through long-standing voluntary participation was presented to Mr. Keith Ottaway, President of Allpriser. The closing Chairman s Gala Dinner and Dance welcomed incoming Chairman, Brad Diggens (MJS Mechanical Ltd. We look forward to seeing everyone in Quebec City at the Fairmont Chateau Frontenac, September 14 17, Proud Gold Sponsor of MCAC s 2010 Annual National Conference

10 #10 BULLETIN CHAIRMAN S REPORT The following is a copy of the Chairman's Report as presented by Immediate Past Chairman, Bob Hoare, on the occasion of the 2010 Annual General Meeting of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada (Friday, September 24 th, 2010 in Halifax, Nova Scotia). Last September, MCAC held its Annual National Conference in San Francisco, California where I was elected to a second year as your National Chairman. I must say that the last 12 months were just as busy as the previous 12 months, if not more. Once again, we've visited members in every province of Canada on the occasion of regional and/or special meetings and provincial conferences. On these occasions, we have kept our members upto-date on the current activities of MCA Canada and we have listened to the issues, concerns, and priorities of our member associations. We have not only carried our message domestically but we have also been involved on the international scene. As an affiliate member of the Canadian Construction Association, we are involved and actively participate on many of CCA s industry related Committees and Council's. We are also represented on CCA s Board of Directors through our incoming National Chairman, Brad Diggens. Internationally, MCA Canada is a member of the European MCA organization as well as a member of the World Plumbing Council. We are well represented on the WPC through our MCA Canada director from Alberta, George Doty. Hans Tiedemann, Executive Director of MCA Alberta is currently acting as the WPC Treasurer. In addition, MCA Canada actively participates in the annual meetings of the International Alliance of MCA's (United Kingdom, Australia, United States, Canada). Every year, on the occasion of MCA of America's national convention, representatives of these international associations meet and discuss issues of mutual concern and interest. The information shared during these meetings benefits all organizations in one form or another. This year, I was fortunate enough to be appointed meeting Chairman. MCA Canada's policy direction comes from our national Board of Directors. MCAC is blessed in having the leaders from each provincial MCA on its Board. What this means is that MCA Canada s activities and priorities are well-thought-out and monitored on a regular basis. Both Board meetings this past September in San Francisco, California and subsequently in January 2010 in Orlando, Florida set the stage for MCAC in 2010 and beyond. Here's a sample of this year's activities: Building Information Modeling (BIM): MCA Canada joined the Canadian BIM Council and has representation on their Board of Directors. We have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Council. CMCEF has been working on several BIM related education and training programs and expects expeditious delivery of those programs to the industry. National Trade Contractors Coalition Canada (NTCCC): Continued to conduct seminars based on the NTCCC guide to CCA s stipulated price subcontract. Held "Advocacy Days at Ontario's Queen's Park (prompt payment legislation/changes to the legislation) and Parliament Hill (prompt payment provisions in the federal government contract form). The message is getting through. Hired legal counsel to draft legislation on prompt payment. To present to Ontario government as an initial step towards getting all Provinces on board. Continue to promote NTCCC s Getting Paid DVD. Building Commissioning Standard (CSA Z-320): Continued meeting with stakeholder groups to finalize draft. Circulated draft standard for public review. Final document to be available the end of 2010 CMCEF to deliver information sessions to the membership starting Industry/Federal Government Relations (continued work and liaison with): Canadian Construction Association Construction Sector Council Mechanical Service Contractors of Canada (see page 6) MCAC s Associate Members (see page 14) World Plumbing Council Canadian Standards Association Canadian Apprenticeship Forum Canadian Mechanical Contracting Education Foundation (see page 4) National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada Others (Canadian Green Building Council, MCA of America, International Alliance of MCA s, Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating, MCAC s Open Shop and Unionized Contractors Committees, Natural Resources Canada, Defense Construction Canada, Public Works and Government Services Canada, Treasury Board Canada). Services, Communication, Publications and Programs: Current communication flow with the general membership through "Just the Fax weekly communiqué. Quarterly National Bulletins highlighting industry association activities. Magazine articles highlighting the Association and its membership (digital format). Production and delivery of annual publication catalogue containing all available business tools and publications. Associate Member Newsletter. Service Contractors Newsletter. Membership Advantage Program (discounts on petroleum, acetylene gas, work clothes, hotels, vehicles, etc.) Day-to-day services and operation. Over the past two years I have had the pleasant task of being your National Chairman. It has taken me across this great country of ours on several occasions provided me with a great opportunity to meet many fine people, our members, from coast to coast. Before I became Chairman, I knew that we had a great national organization but I wasn't fully aware of how great all of our provincial associations are. Every provincial MCA is blessed with dedicated volunteer members and professional staff. Combined, this is what makes MCA Canada best industry trade association in this country, in my humble opinion. Thank you for your support!! Respectfully Submitted, Robert (Bob) Hoare Chairman, MCA Canada

11 BULLETIN #11 MCA CANADA S CHAIRMAN S CHARITY MCA Canada National Chairman, Mr. Brad Diggens announced Operation Eyesight as his Chairman s Charity during his inauguration speech in Halifax, NS this September. Operation Eyesight Universal is an international development organization based in Canada and dedicated to eliminating avoidable blindness in the developing world. Since 1963, Operation Eyesight has prevented more than 35 million people from facing the tragedy of needless blindness. Their work is focused in places where blindness can be deadly, especially to those who are very young, old or poor. A predominant cause of avoidable permanent blindness is trachoma, an eye infection transmitted by flies and exacerbated by cultural and environmental factors. Left untreated, trachoma leads to blindness. The most heartwrenching fact about trachoma is that it can be eradicated with accessible clean water and basic sanitation. Skin and respiratory diseases can also be reduced or eliminated by providing accessible clean water. Operation Eyesight does this by: 1. Drilling and equipping boreholes to bring fresh water to trachoma-endemic regions 2. Establishing water capture and reclamation initiatives, especially where boreholes are not viable 3. Facilitating the sustainability of wells through establishing community committees that monitor, maintain, coordinate accessibility, and set fees for water usage above personal use 4. Education and awareness programs are key factors in prevention and promotion of health-seeking behaviour, especially for women and children. We also establish programs that inform and promote awareness locally through community centres, schools, and media, particularly in rural and remote areas. MCA Canada, on behalf of Chairman Diggens, will be approaching the industry for contributions to help eradicate this curable situation. Please contribute to this extremely worthwhile charity. For more information visit the MCA Canada website at or call the office at or daryl@mcac.ca for your copy of the Operation Eyesight Pledge package.
