2 OUR SPEAKER John Outttten Product Application Manager, Ferrous Foundry Products John graduated with a BS in Materials Engineering from Virginia Tech in From 1981 to 1994 he was employed as Foundry Engineer/ Assistant Metallurgist at Newport News Shipbuilding in the foundry division. There he helped to produce high integrity ferrous and nonferrous castings for nuclear submarines Since 1994 John has worked at FOSECO as Product application Manager for Ferrous Foundry Products, specially the feeding and filtration of steel castings and product development. John will be giving us a general discussion on freezing of steel, types of shrinkage, and the economics of improved casting yield with an example of potential cost savings and increased productivity from shop yield improvement in a Foundry. His presentation stresses the important of good average casting yield in reducing casting costs to maintain good Foundry productivity. Getting to Know Your Directors Petterr Beierr P.R. & Publicity Peter is in his 3 rd year as P.R. & Publicity Director, and has previously served on the board as Education Director. He is currently the Technical Supervisor at Century Pacific Foundry, where he has been employed for 13 years. Prior to that he worked at CAPTIN and Equity Silver Mines, where he began his foundry career pouring gold and silver bullion. He is married with two teenage kids and lives In Port Moody. AFS BC Chapter Bursary For this year, the AFS BC Chapter is providing a bursary in the amount of $500 to anyone in the industry attending post secondary education relevant to the industry or to a child of a member in good standing who is enrolled in any post secondary education program. Briefly outline you career goals, what you would do with the award and submit your application (maximum 2 pages), with your name, address, telephone number, address, and your parents name. Please attach proof of registration in a post-secondary institution. Entries are to be submitted by December 18, 2007 to Eric Hasselmann, Chairman of the AFS BC Chapter. The Board of Directors will convene and review each entrant. The winner, and their parent, will receive the award at the Apprenticeship Award Night, at the Sheraton Guildford Hotel January 15, Thank you for your support and good luck to all entrants

AFS Service Pins are issued in 5 year intervals. Last year the British Columbia Chapter cleaned up at the regional in Portland, so let s try to get as many entrants as possible to keep this tradition going. Yes I believe this is our Apprenticeship Directors attempt to goad those of you south of the border! Please let Tim know ASAP if you have any apprentices that will be participating and he will get the pattern to you right away. Also, please let us know if there are any apprentices working at Patternshops or Foundries that are not yet members, and we will try to get them involved. As always the first place finishers in each category will go on to further glory at the AFS Northwest Regional Conference in Seattle.
