4 PATRONAGE Green & Cold And we re not talking about a frog at the first of spring. Along with receiving $4.3 million in green, Oklahoma AgCredit members could register to win a Yeti cooler, at Patronage Open Houses held in April. Paying a healthy Patronage is a highlight for our members, but beyond that, it validates efforts from the Board of Directors and management to operate a successful cooperative, said Patrick Zeka, Oklahoma AgCredit EVP/ COO/CFO. The Directors place an emphasis on growing capital but they also expect a vigorous patronage return. When a person opens a loan with Oklahoma AgCredit, they become a member of the cooperative. As a member, they have an opportunity to share in the cooperative s financial success through the Patronage Program. Oklahoma AgCredit distributes returns based on the amount of interest expense on each member s loan(s). Since the Patronage Program was initiated in 1997, Oklahoma AgCredit members have received more than $52 million in patronage returns. With a capital position of more than $240 million, Oklahoma AgCredit has the risk-bearing capacity to provide reliable, consistent credit to Oklahoma s farmers, ranchers and rural property owners regardless of swings in the agricultural economy. Returning a patronage further speaks to the strength of our Association. Members who attended a Patronage Open House were eligible to enter a drawing for a Yeti 35 cooler. One winner from each office was drawn during the Annual Meeting held April 27. 7 Carol Cowan, a member of the Watonga office, has lived in Watonga in western Oklahoma all her married life and works alongside Rodney Cowan on their wheat, alfalfa and cattle operation. A member of the Idabel office, Tiete won the Idabel Patronage Open House Drawing in She is shown receiving an ipad from loan officer Michael Willingham. Agriculture has provided a wonderful quality of life for the Snelson family, said Pam Snelson, a member of the Vinita lending office. It has also provided numerous opportunities to share this love of our Oklahoma land and endless possibilities to better serve consumers with abundant, safe, affordable, sustainable food. Carol Cowan People throughout Oklahoma and the nation have benefited from Cowan s tireless commitment to agriculture. In 2010 the Monsanto Company initiated an award called America s Farmers Mom of the Year. Cowan was not only chosen as the Southwest Region winner, but also went on to become the first national America s Farmers Mom of the Year award winner after receiving more than 4,600 online votes. Carol and husband, Rodney, were chosen Blaine County farm family of the year in 1994 and Carol is active in speaking to various groups, promoting agriculture. She has been a source in newspaper, radio and television reports about agriculture. Dirt is a good thing Cowan, born in 1960, grew up on a farm in southwestern Oklahoma near Tipton. I always thought the dirtier I got while helping my dad, the more work it looked like I was doing, Cowan said. I got an early start changing sweeps on the cultivator, driving the tractor with the pipe trailer while my parents laid irrigation pipe, chopping cotton and showing pigs in the 4-H. I was a little, short girl, but I could still make it up the side of those tall cotton trailers to tromp the cotton down so my dad could dump more cotton in before my mother pulled the trailer to the gin. Her parents were both from farming families, Bill and Peggy Dunn Cowan is married to lifelong ag producer Rodney Cowan. His parents Orval and Gerri Cowan farmed also, as did their parents. I come from a long line of people getting their fingernails dirty, Cowan said. Farm family First and foremost I must give the credit to my success in agriculture to my husband Rodney, Cowan said. I had farming in my roots, but the reason I love farming and ranching and know what I know about the industry is because of my husband. To him I owe the credit for our family operation being so successful and staying current on the new applications for the farm. My husband has always been my biggest supporter, telling me I can do anything I put my mind to. Yes, I can drive that four-wheel drive tractor with the 54-foot implement behind me and not take out the fence at the end of the field. Cowan graduated from Tipton High School in 1978, earned an Associate s Degree from Western Oklahoma State College in Altus in 1980 and then she and Rodney were married two weeks after she graduated from Oklahoma State University in After farming with Rodney s family initially, Rodney and Carol farmed 1,200 acres when they started out on their own. They purchased their first farm in 1994, consisting of 240 acres. They now farm more than 5,000 acres. They started out running 400 stocker calves and now it s more than 2,000 head. Cowan and her husband also pasture cattle in the Flint Hills of Kansas at the family ranch some summers. Farm it forward We keep increasing the number of acres we own to someday pass it on to our children to have our legacy continue, Cowan said. We love what we do and want our children to carry on the tradition. Carol and Rodney have four children: Ashley Cowan Neal and husband Jeff; Lance Cowan and wife Amy and sons Dalton and Matthew; Kelsey Cowan Shaw and husband Kurtis and daughters Kinley and Kacie; Kari Cowan Hetherington and husband Colby and son Clark and daughter Abigail. We are a true family operation, where our four children helped out in all capacities. We have three daughters, and one son right in the middle of them all. This is because we had our daughter continued on page 7 FINANCING RURAL OKLAHOMA 5

9 SIGNIFICANT WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE Significant Women in Agriculture, cont... Ashley, then Lance our son, then twin daughters Kelsey and Kari in a little over four years. At one point in time our girls were called the Cowan girls combine crew because the three daughters ran the combines during our wheat harvest. When Cowan looks at the grandchildren, the past yields some great memories. When I look at the grandkids I remember the times I would drive the tractor and have the twins on the floor sleeping, and have to make sure they weren t under the brake or clutch, Cowan said. Our other two children would ride in the tractor with Rodney. I am proud to know all four of our children were farm raised, and are leading productive, happy lives. Tiete Lycklama Storms have been known to beat down a crop, yet not destroy it. Tiete Lycklama of Broken Bow, a lifelong partner of agriculture, has faced some heart-wrenching storms through her 65 years. Lycklama, a native of the Netherlands, was only 12 years old only when the first tragedy struck. Her father suddenly passed away after suffering a heart attack. He was a Godly man. I looked up on him. After Daddy passed away, that changed my childhood, Tiete said, one of five children. I was one of the oldest, I needed to be my Mom s right hand. Lycklama s story is a combination of not only contributions to agriculture, but also of faith and perseverance. Never quit Thirty five years ago, Tiete, husband Tsjerk, and their three children, daughters Teatske and Nynke and son Steve, came to the United States with a small amount of money to back their dream of operating their own business on a rundown dairy farm in east Texas. There were struggles along the way, such as making payments following horrible crops, but their dream progressed. They established a successful dairy in Mount Vernon, Texas and then moved to and began a dairy in Mount Pleasant, Texas. Later, they moved to Valliant, Okla. where they operated a beef cattle and row-crop farm. The next move was to Arizona where the Lycklamas had a cattle ranch and irrigated Alfalfa hay fields. In 2006 the family sold that ranch and moved to back to Oklahoma. Today, Tiete and Tsjerk operate LTF Tree Farm, more than 3,500 acres of intensively managed loblolly pine. They also have a cattle operation, T & T Cattle, on their ranch in southeastern Oklahoma s McCurtain County. Tiete has worn many hats in many different roles to have successful ag businesses in different regions, leaving family and friends in Holland, son-in-law Daniel Lewia said. Her neverquit attitude and desire to make the right decisions on their land has helped them to become successful ag producers. Just as there were storms in her childhood and early adulthood, there has been adversity more recently. Five years ago, son Steve, 32 years old at the time, and Tiete s grandsons Devin, 8, and Dalton, 6, were boating on the Little River near Idabel. Tiete said they struck an object in the water. The boat tipped. All three drowned. Life hasn t been easy and I know a lot of people go through a lot, Tiete said, but God has been faithful and we thank God that we re going to see them again. Exploring opportunities Both in life and agriculture, opportunity has been a key word for the Lycklamas. Ag has created opportunities for Tiete, Lewia said. Opportunities to work hard and reap the rewards of that hard work, and to teach her family the value of hard work and determination. Opportunities to learn about new ag options besides dairy farming. They had to learn about their new ventures and how to best run those businesses. She has also done a wonderful job of educating her family and others about what ag really means to everyone. Tiete, also an acclaimed watercolor and oil artist, stays very busy. She was asked what the next opportunity in her life might bring. I want my grandchildren to go on with and enjoy it, said Tiete, who has five grandchildren, all boys. I ve really prayed that one or two of the boys can take it over some day, but then again, we need to say every day, God, what is your will? That approach helps her weather the days of blue skies as well as those of storms that may beat you down, but not destroy you. Pam Snelson I get to feed everybody, Pam Snelson said from the office of Snelson Farms near Wann, Oklahoma just south of the Kansas line. Feeding people is serious business for Snelson and her husband of 32 years, Steve. They have been co-owners and operators of Snelson Farms since They currently farm 1,500 acres of hard red winter wheat and 3,500 acres of soybeans with these crops going to the Port of Catoosa for shipment to feed the world. Their cash grain operation is supplemented by the cow-calf component. They raise Angus/Angus cross cows and sell calves; saving the best continued on page 9 FINANCING RURAL OKLAHOMA 7

11 SIGNIFICANT WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE Significant Women in Agriculture, cont... to enhance the herd. Snelson says it is important to her to reduce the farm s carbon footprint. The less you do to the environment, the better it is for everyone, Snelson says. We have always done best use practices. We worry about the environment as much as the next person, and maybe more so. If you re not sustainable, how can you pass the farm to the next generation? Passing this fourth generation farm to her two sons, Steven, 29, and Kevin, 27, is something Snelson thinks about a lot. Three generations of family live on the same county road locally known as Snelson Road. Her husband s dad, who is 87, still takes an interest in the farm and her son, Steven, works on the farm and makes good use of his OSU soil science degree. Kevin, who lives in Stillwater, frequently returns to the farm on weekends to help with the cattle. When I get too much of the city, it s nice to go home and hang out with the cows, he said. Ag-vocate Snelson grew up in Bartlesville and had an urban background until she married. She worked for Phillips Petroleum Company for 15 years as an accountant in the International Division. Her degree in business administration from Bartlesville Wesleyan College and international work with Philips laid a foundation for becoming involved in policy. Now Snelson can run farm equipment and also represent agriculture in Washington, D.C. and around the world. I was married to someone in production ag and thought I needed to know a little more about it, Snelson said of her decision to enroll in Class VIII of the Oklahoma Ag Leadership Program (OALP). OALP was the springboard that inspired her to become involved in agriculture at the local, state, national and international levels. Locally, she worked to instill a love of agriculture in youth by working with 4-H and FFA groups, farm safety groups and on an individual basis with those wanting to learn hands-on at the farm. She volunteered to teach Ag in the Classroom lessons at local schools. She was the Washington County president of Oklahoma CattleWomen, Inc. and has been an active member for many years. Snelson is a 2015 graduate of the Master s of Beef Advocacy program. Ag abroad At the state level, Snelson is the Oklahoma Soybean Association s Membership Chair on the Board of Directors while her husband serves as the state president. Nationally, Snelson is serving her second year as the only woman out of 46 directors of the American Soybean Association (ASA). She went to Washington, D.C. in March with the group and plans to go two or three times each year to visit legislators, discuss the Farm Bill and raise issues of crop insurance, tax reform, infrastructure, biotech and trade. In 2016, Snelson went to Tokyo on a trade mission for ASA. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy wanted to highlight women in agriculture and Snelson assisted her by taking part in a dialogue with Japanese women who represented oil seed companies which are end users of U.S. soybeans mostly processed for oil. She participated in a trade mission with Deputy Secretary Alexis Taylor in Shanghai, China. Meetings such as these are an important component of producing food commodities because market expansion will help fund farms and feed the world. Her 2017 appointment to the Field to Market Sustainability Alliance will be Snelson s next challenge. The organization helps producers calculate the amount of energy they use in farming and get ideas for reducing it. Her family is getting ready to make this calculation on Snelson Farms. They will use software that takes into account the number of acres and inputs into their operation. She will also visit other farms to see how helpful the assessment is. Put it all together Snelson named three things as her most important achievements in agriculture: being a voice for women in agriculture by claiming the only female slot on the ASA board, being recognized and accepted as a speaker on GMO and other important topics and providing future generations with ways to keep farming by continuing to advocate on Capitol Hill. She believes women have a logical role in farming and advises getting a mentor, going to college and learning from someone who is actually farming. Snelson hopes women she encourages to become farmers will get to enjoy one of her favorite moments - when they take the last meal of the day to the field during harvest. It s a beautiful time with the combines running and trucks lined up, Snelson said. Seeing all of it come together what we ve grown, my family all together, the sun setting behind them. 13 At Oklahoma AgCredit, we appreciate our members financial partnership with us. The Refer & Earn Program has allowed us to reward current members who make solid referrals since 2011, but has been terminated to ensure compliance with Federal regulations. In an effort to adhere to regulations that prohibit giving rewards for some mortgage loans and that prohibit giving rewards to people involved in certain real estate settlement services, the Association has opted to discontinue the program. Additionally, regulations would not permit rewards to be given for referrals of consumer purpose loans creating confusion regarding who is eligible for rewards. Oklahoma AgCredit values its members, as well as referrals from those members. Please continue to promote your co-op!
