Janelle is presently working towards a BS in Aviation Technology in Air Traffic Control & Aviation Management from the University of Alaska. Community Highlight: History of Nulato Nulato is an Athabascan community that was formerly known as Noolaaghe Doh, the place of the chum salmon, a fish camp that its Ancestors used during their seasonal rounds. It was later explored by Russians who twice built a fort there at the mouth of the Nulato River, and at a place now known as Gazaalma. The forts were burned down by Nulato s ancestors. Then, the Catholic missionaries came and claimed the area around Gazaalma and built a mission school. The U.S. government at that time subsidized Christian schools to civilize the local Native populations and forced them to speak only English. It also mandated that western education be taught with the threat of imprisoning any head of household who did not have their children in school. This led to the permanent Nulato community that now exists. Western schooling created a disruption in the culture, language and society of Athabascan people. Yet, despite these efforts to destroy Athabascan culture and language, it persists; and now the youth are relearning their Native language through revitalization efforts.
