2 Message to Shareholders BOARD OF DIRECTORS Orie G. Williams Chair Victor Nicholas Vice Chair Miranda Wright Treasurer Christopher Simon Secretary Walter Wally Carlo Shirley Cleaver Lee DeWilde Jennifer Fate Erica Frankson Georgianna Lincoln Esther M. McCarty Sonta Roach PJ Simon PRESIDENT & CEO Aaron M. Schutt COMMUNICATIONS Doyon, Limited 1 Doyon Place, Suite 300 Fairbanks, Alaska Phone Fax Toll-Free Dear Shareholders, The Doyon, Limited board of directors completed their annual strategic planning session in May. The main topics during the session were company growth, capital investments and shareholder opportunities. We will share more details about future goals as plans are finalized. Doyon, along with other regional and village corporations, recently supported House Bill 149 (HB 149). The bill would allow Doyon, with shareholder approval, to change our quorum to as low as one-third of shares eligible to vote. Currently, in order to hold an annual meeting, a quorum of 50 percent plus one vote must be obtained. Doyon supports lowering the quorum requirements due to decreasing voter participation in the annual meeting of shareholders. As I mentioned in April s message to shareholders, percent of voting shareholders participated in the board election in March. Despite our focused efforts to increase shareholder participation, voting turnout continues its downward trend. If the trend continues, Doyon may be unable to hold future annual meetings to conduct important business, including the election of directors, until quorum can be achieved and another meeting is scheduled. This would be a very time intensive and costly process, with negative effects on your corporation s operations. For the past few years, Doyon has worked hard to increase the rate of proxy returns by offering online voting, giving away more cash prizes, utilizing social media, conducting a survey and developing videos of shareholders encouraging others to vote. These efforts helped to increase shareholder voting numbers somewhat, but we are still at risk each year for not achieving the quorum required to hold the annual meeting. We must do something now to ensure we are able to hold future annual meetings and conduct important business. Please look for more information in the coming months regarding changes to Doyon s quorum requirements and how you can help. Finally, please join me in congratulating the class of The Doyon region has reason to be proud of the many accomplishments of our shareholders. We joined Doyon Foundation in May to celebrate the achievements of this year s graduates. You can read more about the celebration and view photos of the graduates by visiting As always, thank you for your continued support of Doyon and its employees. I look forward to sharing more about our efforts in future newsletters. Enjoy the rest of our beautiful summer. Sincerely, Aaron M. Schutt President and CEO LIKE DOYON ON FACEBOOK! Subsidiary News: DRFS Conducts First Field Training for Employees DRFS employees at NC Machinery/CAT Power Systems. The first Doyon Remote Facilities & Services (DRFS) field training took place this year in two parts one in February and one in March. DRFS plans to conduct the training annually for employees who work in the field. It is important all employees are aware of policies, procedures and safety practices. Annual trainings allow DRFS to provide our employees with the resources necessary to build great teams for our future, said Mariah Pitka, general manager of DRFS. Coordinating with DRFS field employees schedules, two groups rotated into Anchorage for a two-day training session. Each of the sessions covered identical information, including a review of company policies and procedures, off-site classroom and hands-on generator training with NC Machinery and CAT Power Systems, and a human resources and legal compliance briefing. DRFS field employees receive new bright, reflective coats to wear in inclement North Slope weather. The training also included a half-day certification course with Team One, during which 19 employees completed and received their first aid and CPR/AED certification. Each group also met and spoke with guests from the DRFS parent company, Doyon, Limited, and with safety professionals from Arctic Chiropractic. DRFS will continue to host the training annually in an effort to educate and keep employees safe as well as to carry out the company mission, which is to offer safe, contemporary and comfortable accommodations in remote locations, and the DRFS vision, which is a modern approach to remote living. For more information on DRFS and career opportunities for shareholders, visit A Team One instructor supervises DRFS employees as they practice CPR/AED protocol. 3

4 S N Shareholder Spotlight: Aldrane Jimmie Builds Career with Doyon A U Doyon Universal Services (DUS) employee Aldrane Jimmie is the grandson of Charles (Chucky) L. Jimmie and the son of Charles B. Jimmie and Bernadette M. Jimmie. A lifelong resident of Mito, Jimmie said he considered moving to town, but quickly dismissed the thought, knowing that he loves village life too much. When it comes to slope life, Jimmie said, It s nice, we stay busy and we try and provide a home feel to the guys working on the rigs, and good food is important and friendly staff is important. It has been awesome working for Doyon. The job I had in Denali was really cool, but the job up north has been great. Sh m re 1re After graduating from Minto High School in 2008, Jimmie attended a Doyon/ARAMARK job fair held in Fairbanks in There, he learned about the employment opportunities available in Denali National Park and Preserve. As a result of the job fair, Jimmie worked for three consecutive seasons as a bus washer in the park. Jimmie s coworkers and the DUS management have nothing but great things to say about Jimmie, praising his work ethic, his drive for success and willingness to learn. Jimmie said he had every intention of returning to the park for a fourth year, but set his sights on a new goal in 2013, when he attended a Doyon outreach event in Minto. At this event, he was encouraged to apply for an upcoming DUS facilities training program. Jimmie applied to attend the training, was selected and graduated in May Aldrane Jimmie has proven himself to be a valuable and important part of our kitchen team here at Kodiak camp, said Brix Iverson, DUS Kodiak Camp manager. Aldrane is continually looking for ways to grow personally and professionally with Doyon Universal Services. Aldrane is very admirable in the way he represents our company and our values. C sh ne el ad en Since his graduation, Jimmie has worked as a DUS employee in remote camps throughout the North Slope of Alaska. He has held various kitchen positions, and through hard work and dedication, he worked his way up and is currently a baker s assistant at Camp Kodiak. As part of his new role, Jimmie attended the first DUS bakers academy, offered by DUS and ServSave in November I had a great time in training. We were taught how to set up our work spaces and how to effectively use various kitchen tools and manage our time, he said.
