2 The Speakers Professor WANG Chien Ming is Professor of Civil Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Recently, Professor Wang has been appointed as the Deputy Head for the Engineering Science Programme, NUS Faculty of Engineering. Professor Wang is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Singapore, a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers (U.K.), and a Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is presently the Chairman of the IStructE Singapore Division. He serves in the Steering Committees for ICOTA and APCOM. His research interests are in the areas of structural stability, vibration, optimization, plated structures and Mega-Floats. He is the author or co-author of over 300 scientific publications, reviewer of many international journals in mechanics, editor of several conference proceedings such as the proceedings on optimization techniques and applications and on computational mechanics and special issues of journals and co-editor of two volumes on Analysis and Design of Plated Structures. He is an Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics and an Editorial Board Member of Engineering Structures and the Journal of Computational Structural Engineering. Moreover, he has coauthored three books Vibration of Mindlin Plates, Shear Deformable Beams and Plates: Relationships with Classical Solutions and Exact Solutions for Buckling of Structural Members. Professor Wang research papers on flexural-torsional buckling of monosymmetric I-beams have been cited in structural stability textbooks and his buckling formulas for these beams have been adopted in the American Aluminium Specification and in the design of crane runaway beams according to the Australian design code AS4100 Steel Structures. His paper entitled Recent Elastic Buckling Formulas and Design Charts for Straight Members and Plates bagged the IES/IStructE Best Structural paper award Professor Torgeir MOAN has been Professor of Marine Structures in Norwegian University of Science & Technology (NTNU) since His main research interest is structural analysis and design of all kinds of marine structures. He has authored more than 350 scientific papers, and delivered more than 20 keynote, plenary lectures in international conferences and award lectures. He has educated more than 40 PhD candidates and 350 MSc students. He has been a visiting Professor at MIT and UC Berkeley. He has contributed in the development of various structural design standards for offshore structures, ships and floating bridges in Norway and internationally and in design of novel types of offshore structures. Most recently he was responsible for the most modern standard for analysis of loads and load effects for offshore structures (NORSOK N-003) that will serve as basis for ISO standard for floating platforms. He has also been engaged in accident inquiries, notably the Alexander Kielland accident. Since 1976 he has been involved in the International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress, as committee chairman and standing committee member and chairman. He is editor of J. Marine Structures and serves on the editorial board of 7 other journals. Moan has been elected member of academies of science and letters, such as the Royal Academy of Engineering in UK, as well as elected Fellow of several international professional societies like ASCE and IABSE and life member of ASME. He received the Statoil research prize in 1998 and Petroleum Safety Award in He received the J. Rice Award from ASME in 2004 and the JSChung ISOPE Award in Professor Moan has been Dean of Faculty of Marine Technology, NTH (NTNU) and served as project manager in several research projects in SINTEF. Since 2002 he has been director of the Centre of Excellence for Ships and Ocean Structures at NTNU. He was appointed the first Keppel Professor in National University of Singapore in December 2002.

3 Professor LI Runpei is Professor and Director of State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). He graduated from Department of Naval Architecture of SJTU in 1964 and became a teaching staff of the Department. He was Visiting Scholar in Ocean Engineering Department of Lloyd s Register of Shipping, UK and in University of Glasgow during He was Professor and Vice President of SJTU during , and Director of State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering at SJTU since His special research interests include Dynamic response of ship and offshore structures, Theoretical and experimental study on floating production system, and Safety evaluation of offshore structures. His professional activities includes Vice President of Chinese Society of Ocean Engineering; Vice President of Shanghai Society of Oceanology and Limnology; Vice Chairman of Advisory Committee of Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers; Member of Floating Production System Committee of 14 th and 15 th International Ship and Offshore Structure Congress (ISSC). Professor YANG Jianmin is Professor and Vice Director of State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). He was educated in Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering of SJTU, and obtained his Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. degrees in 1982, 1985 and 1988 respectively. He conducted post-doctoral research in West Japan Fluid Engineering Laboratory, Japan from 1991 to He became Vice Dean of School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering of SJTU in 1995, and Vice Director of State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering in He was Visiting Scholar in Department of Civil Engineering, Texas A&M University for 3 months from December Professor Yang s speciality is in Hydrodynamics of ship and ocean structures. His professional activities include: Vice chairman of Ship Mechanics Committee, China Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineers; Chairman of Ocean Engineering Technology Committee of Shanghai Society Naval Architecture and Marine Engineers; Member of Engineering and Material Academic Committee, National Natural Science Foundation Committee; Member of Ocean Engineering Technical Committee, International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) and Member of Technical Program Committee (TPC) of the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE). Dr. Xing ZHENG is the Principal Naval Architect of Oil & Gas Services in Lloyd s Register Asia, Singapore. Dr Zheng received his PhD in naval architecture from Glasgow University UK in After five years working University of Newcastle upon Tyne UK and Kvaerner Oil & Gas London, he joined Lloyd s Register London Office in There, he was head of hydrodynamics in R&D Department and was responsible for hydrodynamic and loading related research and rule development. He was the 1 st Chairman, and then LR task leader, of the load working group in IACS Common Structural Rule for Tanker project and LR s representative to IACS Wave Data and Sea Load Working Group. In August 2005, Dr Zheng was assigned to his current post in Singapore to strength LR s plan approval capability in Oil & Gas Services, Asia. Dr Zheng is also a visiting professor to Huazhong (Central China) University of Science and Technology.

4 Dr. John HALKYARD is Chief Research Advisor for Technip, Inc. in Houston, Texas. His responsibilities include research on new floating production system designs, hydrodynamics and technical support of ongoing projects. He is currently on leave from Technip to teach a course on Floating Structures at NUS. Dr. Halkyard was one of the pioneers of the spar concept, joining inventor Ed Horton with Deep Oil Technology, Inc. (DOT) in DOT was merged into Aker Maritime in 2000, which was subsequently acquired by CSO and then Technip. Dr. Halkyard received his Sc. D. from MIT and started his career as leader of an R&D team to develop deepsea mining systems to recover manganese nodules from the Pacific. He worked for Kennecott Copper Corporation in this capacity from 1972 to Between 1980 and 1988 Dr. Halkyard first formed his own Ocean Engineering consulting company, then merged with Arctec Offshore Corporation in 1983 where he served as Vice President responsible for hydrodynamic testing of offshore and naval projects until he joined DOT. Dr. Halkyard is a past member of the Marine Board of the National Research Council; he a member of SNAME and ASME and is Chairman of the 26th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering in San Diego next June. He has served on the visiting committees for the Ocean Engineering programs at MIT, the US Naval Academy and the University of Hawaii. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Western Australia.
