4 Biographies Wanetta Ayers is the division director of the Division of Economic Development at the State of Alaska, Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development. Prior to this position, Ayers served as the executive director for the Western Alaska Community Development Association (WACDA), which serves as the administrative panel for six Community Development Quota organizations. Before working for WACDA, Ayers served as the executive director for the Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference. Ayers has worked in the private sector for such firms as Holland America Westours, the Afognak Native Corporation, and the National Bank of Alaska. She received an M.B.A. from the University of Washington, earned a B.B.A. from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and received a certificate from the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Institute. John Borbridge, Jr. was raised in Southeast Alaska and graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Borbridge served six years as the President of the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska during which he was instrumental in efforts to settle the Alaska Native land claims. He later served as a lobbyist for Alaska Federation of Natives, President and Chairman of the Board of Sealaska Corporation, President of Sealaska Corporation, and was appointed by the United States Congress to serve as Commissioner on the American Indian Policy Review Commission. Borbridge also received a Presidential appointment to serve at the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe and served as Chairman of the Board of the Alaska Federation of Natives, and as an AFN Vice-President. Valerie Davidson is a member of Orutsararmuit Native Council and the Senior Director of Legal and Intergovernmental Affairs for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. Val has been the spokesperson, chief political and legal strategist for ANTHC s Dental Health Aide Therapy Program. Val served as a member of the National Steering Committee for the Reauthorization of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, served as a member of the National Title V Negotiated Rulemaking Committee for Title V of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act and she has served as Co-Lead Negotiator for Alaska s tribes to negotiate the Alaska Tribal Health Compact for health services for Alaska Natives and American Indians in Alaska. She is Chair of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Tribal Technical Advisory Group (TTAG), serves on the Medicare & Medicaid Policy Committee of the National Indian Health Board and on the Alaska Health Care Commission. Val enjoys spending time at home with her niece, nephew, and two daughters. Jim Dodson has been President/CEO of the Fairbanks Economic Development Corporation since Jim is a lifelong Fairbanks resident. He and his wife Kathi raised 4 children and have 2 grandchildren. Jim served in the US Army Vietnam 5 th Special Forces Group and is a UA graduate. He is a successful businessman who serves on numerous local, state and national business and non-profit advisory boards; including the Secretary of the Air Force s Civilian Advisory Board, the Governor s Alaska Military Force Advocacy and Structure Team (AMFAST) and the State of Alaska Aviation Advisory Board. Jim s work at FEDC has been instrumental in supporting and developing new industry in the Fairbanks North Star Borough and the state. He is a tireless supporter of Energy programs and new jobs for Alaska.

5 Major Wayne Don, member of the Cupik/Yupik tribes in Alaska, was recently honored as a 2011 Ecotrust Indigenous Leadership Award finalist. He was also selected in 2011 as an American Marshall Memorial Fellow. A former army officer raised on Nunivak Island, Alaska, Wayne received both a Western and cultural education. While serving as tribal chairman since 2007, he has brought the tribe into financial profitability, created new programs, and grown the tribe s assets more than eightfold. He is also a true leader in his ability to act as a social and cultural bridge between the youth and elders, and in creating the first-ever cultural, academic, and tourism camp in Alaska. The camp creates a new economic development opportunity for the tribe as well as creating a place for cultural preservation and cultural and academic teaching. Don lives in Eagle River with his wife, Alicia, and three children. Richard Frank was born and raised in the Minto, Alaska area. He grew up hunting, fishing, dog mushing, and trapping in the area. He attended school in Rampart but left at age 13 to work in Nenana for the Alaska Railroad and later as a deckhand on the stern-wheeler, Nenana. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as an aircraft mechanic. After the War and a brief stint at Boeing in Seattle, Frank returned to the stern-wheeler, where he worked his way up from deckhand to captain. During the 1960s and early 70s he served as Minto Chief, President of the Minto Corporation, ran several businesses, supported the Fairbanks Native Association, and was a key interior participate in ANCSA. Frank served as the Tanana Chiefs Conference s (TCC) Youth Coordinator and eventually the director of the TCC s Alcohol and Drug Prevention program. In 2001, he was named Elder of the Year by the Alaska Federation of Natives. He is married to Anna and they have four children and numerous grandchildren. Sven Haakanson, Jr. was born and raised in the Old Harbor, Alaska and is a member of the Old Harbor Alutiiq Tribe. He holds a B.A. in English from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from Harvard University. Since 2000, Haakanson has worked as the Executive Director of the Alutiiq Museum, a Native cultural center in Kodiak, Alaska. He is the museum s lead spokesperson and fundraiser. He works with the Alutiiq Heritage Foundation board to enhance charitable giving, increase collaboration with Kodiak s Alutiiq villages, manage the museum staff, and represent the museum at various functions and meetings. Haakanson serves on several boards and commissions. In 2007 his work was honored with a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. Haakanson is an accomplished artist, known for his carvings and photography. He is married to Belika and they have two daughters. Former U.S. Senator Fred Harris, a widely published author, is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of New Mexico and Director of the UNM Fred Harris Congressional Internship Program. Harris was twice elected to the U.S. Senate from Oklahoma ( ), served as National Chair of the Democratic Party ( ), and was a member of the President s National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders-Kerner Commission ( ). He was an unsuccessful candidate for his party s presidential nomination in In the United States Senate, Harris led the fight that greatly increased the amount of land and money eventually awarded to Alaska Natives under the ANCSA legislation and fought against aspects of the law that Natives found objectionable. Harris has produced, in addition to his most recent book, Does People Do It? A Memoir, seventeen other books of non-fiction, including, as co-editor, Locked in the Poorhouse: Cities, Race, and Poverty in the United States. He is also an awardwinning author of three novels, including his most recent, Following the Harvest. Shauna Hegna is Alutiiq from Port Lions on Kodiak Island. She is a shareholder of Afognak Native Corporation and Koniag, Inc. and a tribal member of Native Village of Port Lions and Native Village of Afognak. Shauna works as the Vice President of Shareholder Services for Afognak Native Corporation. Hegna spent much of her career working for RurAL CAP, serving as their Deputy Director. She now enjoys volunteering as the Executive Director of the RurAL CAP Foundation and a Board member of Rural Energy Enterprises. Shauna is a 2010 NCAIED Native American 40 Under 40 and a 2007 recipient of Alaska s Top Forty Under 40. She served as the chair of the National Congress of American Indians Alaska Local Planning Committee, the board president of Alaska Community Share, and a board member of the Koniag Education Foundation. Shauna holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Alaska and is a graduate of Harvard Business School s High Potentials Leadership Program. Shauna is married to Josh and they have two children.

6 ANI Photo William Iggiagruk (Willie) Hensley is currently serving as the Visiting Distinguished Professor of Business and Public Policy in UAA s College of Business and Public Policy as well as Chairman of the First Alaskans Institute s Board of Trustees. Hensley was a key participant in the drafting of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. He served as the founder of the Northwest Alaska Native Association and worked for its successor, NANA Regional Corporation, for twenty years. Hensley helped establish the Alaska Federation of Natives and has served as its director, president, and cochair. He served in the Alaska Legislature as a representative and senator, and also worked for Alyeska Pipeline Service Company as manager of federal government relations. Hensley is married to Abigale and currently resides in Anchorage. Betty Huntington is the CEO for Gana-A Yoo, Limited, the Alaska Native Village Corporation for the villages of Galena, Koyukuk, Nulato and Kaltag. Prior to being hired as CEO in 2007, she served as board member for 9 years. She has over 25 years of leadership and managerial experience in corporate and non-profit professional organizations. She served as controller on the Senior Management team of Doyon, Limited for 13 years and as an Accountant and Accounting Supervisor for Tanana Chiefs Conference for 9 years. Ms. Huntington received her BBA in Accounting from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in She also serves as President for Khotol Services Corporation and Gana-A Yoo Services, wholly owned subsidiaries of Gana- A Yoo, Limited. Lisa Jaeger has served as tribal government specialist for the Tanana Chiefs Conference in Fairbanks Alaska since Jaeger travels extensively to interior villages assisting tribes in designing tribal government structures and procedures, constitutions, tribal codes, and policies. She teaches tribal government courses for the Interior Athabascan Tribal College, University of Alaska, National Judicial College, and numerous conferences and seminars. Jaeger has written several handbooks for Alaska tribes on tribal government, youth court, and tribal court development. She has also produced films on tribal court development and Indian law. She has undergraduate degrees in biology and secondary education, and a master s degree in Northern Studies-Indian Law from the Universities of Arizona and Alaska. Panigkaq Agatha John-Shields is originally from Nunakauyaq (Toksook Bay). She is the daughter of Paul (Kangrilnguq) and Martina (Anguyaluk) John. Agatha and her husband, Sam, have six children. She currently is teaching at UAA as an Assistant Professor for Educational Leadership for College of Education. She is the Co-Director of a culturally responsive educational leadership master s pilot Consortium of Alaska Native Leaders, Engagement and Development (CAN-LEAD) Project for Alaska Native teachers that want to pursue their leadership endorsement through UAA which will begin in January. She worked as a Yup ik language and culture teacher for nine years in Lower Kuskokwim School District (LSKD) and later became the principal for a nationally and internationally recognized Yup ik immersion program for eight years at Ayaprun Elitnaurvik Yup ik Immersion Charter School in Bethel before moving to Anchorage. Bernice Joseph assumed responsibilities as executive dean of the College of Rural and Community Development (CRCD) in November She was named vice chancellor for rural, community and Native education on October 16, She served at UAF from as an assistant professor in the Department of Alaska Native and Rural Development and holds a master of business administration degree from UAF. Before being named dean of the CRCD, Joseph served as the deputy commissioner of the Alaska Department of Community and Economic Development. She was the department's tribal liaison, oversaw rural development programs, served as a member of the management team and was a key advisor to Gov. Tony Knowles. Joseph has also worked for the Doyon Foundation and the Fairbanks Native Association.

7 Daniel J. Julius has been the Vice President for Academic Affairs for the University of Alaska System and Professor in the College of Management, University of Alaska Fairbanks since Most recently he served as Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor at Benedictine University in Illinois. Prior to that he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of California; Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor at the University of San Francisco; Assistant Vice Chancellor for Faculty and Staff Relations for the California State University System; Director of Personnel Services for the Vermont State College System; and Director of the Center for Higher Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is a recipient of Fulbright and Kellogg Fellowships and has served on or led approximately ten accreditation teams. He holds an undergraduate degree in Humanities from The Ohio State University. His graduate and post graduate work in organizational behavior, industrial labor relations, and higher education was completed at Columbia and Stanford Universities. Alfred (Al) Ketzler, Sr. was born and raised in Nenana. He helped organize a meeting of 32 villages in Tanana, Alaska in 1962 that became the foundation for Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC). He was one of the active participants in the Native land claims movement from the interior. Ketzler travelled to Washington, D.C. to present a petition to freeze state land selections until the Native land claims were settled. As an Alaska field representative for the Association on American Indian Affairs, he was one of five people authorized to negotiate terms of the land claims. He was elected the first president of TCC in 1969, became the deputy director of the Alaska Federation of Natives in 1970 and was appointed acting executive director in Ketzler retired from TCC in He also helped organize the first Alaska Native publication, the Tundra Times. April Laktonen Counceller is currently the Alutiiq Language Manager at the Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository in Kodiak, AK. She oversees the museum s language learning programs and works to enhance knowledge and documentation of the Alutiiq language. She received her undergraduate degree from Brown University in 2002, her M.A. in Rural Development from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2005, and her Interdisciplinary Studies Ph.D. from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in Her Ph.D. studies focused on researching the cultural significance of the Alutiiq Language New Words Council on Kodiak Island. Photo Courtesy of Doyon, Ltd. Sharon McConnell serves as the vice president of communications for Doyon, Limited. Prior to joining Doyon, Limited in October 2008, Ms. McConnell served as the Doyon Foundation Executive Director for seven years. She has worked as reporter, producer or anchor for various statewide media outlets including the now defunct Tundra Times, KIAK Radio in Fairbanks, and KIMO Television in Anchorage. From 1994 to 2002, Ms. McConnell was co-owner of Blueberry Productions; one of the few Native owned multi-media production companies in Alaska. Since 1991 she has anchored the annual statewide television broadcast coverage of the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention. She is the current vice-president of Evansville Incorporated, her village corporation and is also an elected official, serving as the vice-president of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Board of Education. Ms. McConnell is Inupiaq from the village of Evansville in the Brooks Range. Ms. McConnell is both a shareholder of Doyon and NANA, and has four children and six grandchildren. Emil Notti retired in 2010 as Alaska s commissioner of commerce and economic development. He is an engineer, prominent Alaska Native leader, and Alaska public servant. He graduated from Northrop University with a dual degree in aeronautical and electrical engineering. His extensive background includes first president of the Alaska Federation of Natives during which he was an instrumental player in establishing the state s Native corporations; past president of Cook Inlet Native Association, past president Doyon Limited; former Commissioner of the Department of Community and Regional Affairs under Governor Sheffield; 30-year board member with the National Bank of Alaska; and Veteran of the United States Navy. Born in Koyukuk, Notti holds an Honorary Doctorate degree from the Alaska Methodist University.

8 Alice Petrivelli, Aleut from Atka whose family was relocated by the U.S. Government s Aleut Internment during World War II, as a housewife in the latter 1960s, she became concerned about Alaska Natives losing their land. To learn more she started attending the Aleut League meetings and before long was asked to work for the newly formed The Aleut Corporation (TAC) created by ANCSA. Since then she has served in multiple leadership capacities including Chair, Vice Chair, President, and Vice President of TAC, TAC representative on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act Board, Alaska Native Heritage Center Academy Board, Aleutian Pribilof Islands Cultural Heritage Program Advisory Board, President of Atxam Corporation, Member of the Alaska Trust Company, Member and former Secretary of the Alaska Native Science Commission and was a staunch advocate of restitution for the displaced World War II Aleuts which ultimately resulted in Aleut reparations with the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of She was the first woman to serve as CEO for an ANCSA corporation. Gordon L. Pullar, an associate professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, teaches courses on the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and indigenous leadership among other topics. A Kodiak Island Sugpiaq, he is a past president/ceo of the Kodiak Area Native Association, past chairman of the Koniag Education Foundation and currently serves on the Tangirnaq Native Village Tribal Council and the Alutiiq Museum board. While a member of the Alaska Federation of Natives board he served on the Legislative Committee that was successful in securing the 1991 amendments to ANCSA from Congress. He holds a Ph.D. from the Union Institute. Brian Rogers was named University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Chancellor in He had been interim chancellor since A longtime Fairbanks resident and state leader, Rogers served for seven years as the UA system s finance vice president, four years in the Alaska State House and eight years as a member of the UA Board of Regents, with three of those years as chair. A former UAF student, he attended Trinity College and Brown University before receiving his master s degree in public administration from Harvard. In 1996 Rogers formed one of Alaska s leading economic and public policy consulting firms, Information Insights, serving as principal consultant and chief financial officer. Rogers is married to Sherry Modrow. They have two grown sons. Rogers is a member of numerous community organizations including the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce, Fairbanks Downtown Rotary and several others. John Sackett, Athabascan, born at Cutoff on the Koyukuk River, was launched into a Native leadership role as the youngest Chief ever elected to the Tanana Chiefs Conference where he began a life-long pursuit of Alaska Native rights. His Alaska public office career began at age 22 when elected to the Alaska House of Representatives for the Interior and later as State Senator in His life experience also included owning private businesses, serving as vice president for the Fairbanks Native Association, founding president and chairman of Doyon Ltd., and serving on state-wide private industry boards. John Shively first came to Alaska in 1965 as a VISTA volunteer. What started as a one year assignment turned into a career involved in the issues that have shaped Alaska both in the private and public sector. Shively worked with NANA Regional Corporations on the development of the Red Dog Mine and served most recently as Holland America Lines executive in Alaska. He has served two governors and is a former commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources. Shively has been a trustee for Alaska Permanent Fund, regent at the University of Alaska and served on numerous boards including the Resource Development Council where he served as president for five years. In 2009, Shively received the Bill Egan award from the Alaska State Chamber of Commerce as their outstanding Alaskan of the year. Shively has also been recognized with the prestigious Denali Award from the Alaska Federation of Natives. Shively currently leads the Anchorage-based Pebble Partnership as CEO.

9 L. Tiel Smith was raised in Dillingham, Alaska. He is a Bristol Bay Native Corporation (BBNC) and Choggiung Shareholder. Tiel s parents are Dillingham locals Lyle and Silke Smith. He married Erin Smith, daughter of Dillingham-raised John Smith. Tiel and Erin have two sons and one daughter. He holds a bachelor s degree in science education from Utah State University. He was part of the statewide telehealth systems support for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, and lifelong commercial salmon fisherman of Bristol Bay. As Land and Resources Manager, Tiel is committed to maintaining the balance between land development and culture preservation. We keep this focus as we pursue BBNC s land and resource goals. James Stotts (Jimmy) was born in Barrow, Alaska and raised in Barrow and other communities throughout rural Alaska. He attended Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka, Alaska followed by the University of Alaska Anchorage where he earned a degree in Business Management. He worked for Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corporation and Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, both created under the terms of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. Over a thirty year career he worked in various executive capacities at both organizations and served on the Board of Directors of both organizations. Jimmy also served as an Assembly Member of the North Slope Borough from Jimmy represented Alaska on the first Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) in 1980, eventually serving three consecutive terms from 1980 to In the early 1990s he worked for ICC Greenland as Environmental Projects Coordinator in Nuuk, Greenland. Since January 2008 he worked for ICC Alaska as Executive Director. In June 2009 he was appointed by the ICC Executive Council to serve as ICC Chair until June Jimmy is currently serving as ICC Alaska President. Jimmy is married to Karoline and they have one son. Andy Teuber serves as the president and chairman of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC). Teuber also serves as the CEO and president of the Kodiak Area Native Association (KANA). Previously he has served as a director, vice chairman, and vice president of Koniag, Inc., Kodiak s ANCSA regional corporation. Teuber serves on the boards of the Alaska Federation of Natives, The Alaska State Chamber of Commerce, The Alutiiq Heritage Foundation, The Secretary of Health and Human Services Tribal Advisory Committee, The Healthy Alaska Natives Foundation, The Alaska Native Health Board, and other Native and civic organizations. Andy lives in Kodiak, Alaska with his family and operates as the owner and pilot of Denali Flying Service, LLC and Kodiak Helicopters, LLC. He holds an M.B.A. from the University of Washington. He has three children. Tim Wallis is currently the Chair/Vice President of Doyon Utilities, LLC. Wallis served as the General Manager of Doyon Properties Inc. from where he was responsible for management and maintenance of the Doyon Industrial Facilities. He was the Project Manager for the Battle Area Complex and Collective Arms Training Facility, Donnelly Training Area and other military projects on Forts Greely, Wainwright and Richardson. During the 1960s Wallis was involved in the formation of the Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC). He has also served in the Alaska House of Representatives and as Chairman, President and CEO of Doyon, Limited. John Weise, originally from Bethel, received his bachelor s and master s degrees in education from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Oregon. He has been a teacher, elementary and secondary school principal for the Annette Islands School District. His administrative duties also include assistant superintendent for the Lower Kuskokwim School District and superintendent of the Yupiit School District. Dr. Weise concluded his educational work as executive director at UAF for an alternative teacher training program. Recent work experience includes working on the legislative staff for Senator Lyman Hoffman in Juneau.

10 Mike Williams was born to the late Timothy and Helena Lomack Williams of Akiak. He has served on his Tribal Council for 35 years and is currently the Chief of the Yupiit Nation. He has served with the Yupiit School Board for over 30 years and he is currently the Vice President. Mike is a member of the Kuskokwim College Advisory board. He also served on the Alaska State Board of Education, the Association of Alaska School Boards, and the Village Corporation board of directors. Williams was the Village Corporation s Business Manager for eight years. He is a former National Congress of American Indian Area Vice President, former Chairman of the Association of Village Council Presidents, and former Vice President of Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation. He is currently serving on the Institute for Tribal Governments, Portland State University, and is a member at large with the National Tribal Environmental Council. Mike is a Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counselor and an avid Iditarod Sobriety Musher, completed 14 times. He is married to Maggie, and they have 5 children and 5 grandchildren. She is the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Sealaska Corporation and a member of the Board of Directors of the Alaska Federation of Natives. At the national level, she serves on the board of trustees of the Smithsonian National Museum of American Indians and chair of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act Review Committee. Worl has done extensive research throughout Alaska and the circumpolar Arctic. She has written a number of landmark studies and reports on bowhead whale and seal hunting, impacts of industrial development on Native communities, repatriation, and Tlingit real and intellectual property laws. Worl is a Tlingit and member of the Thunderbird Clan from the House Lowered from the Sun and a Child of the Sockeye Clan. Miranda Wright serves as the director of Alaska Native Studies and Rural Development at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She has served on the Doyon, Ltd. board of directors since She has held the office of chair and currently serves as the board treasurer. Wright chairs the finance and investment board committee and serves on the Doyon Government Contracting, Inc. board. She chairs the Community Advisory Board for Holland America/Westours and is active on the Chancellor s Advisory Committee on Native Education. She has both a B.A. and M.A. degree in Anthropology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She served as the executive director of the Doyon Foundation from as well as serving on numerous boards and commissions. Wright has also been a small business owner since 1967.
