Candidates for Election to the Board 2013 Listed in Alphabetical Order Peter Clancy Paul Reid President John Robinson Greg Golledge Alan Creighton Vice President Geoffrey Webb Greg Golledge Paul Reid Reinhard Ronnebeck N/A John Robinson Thomas Thorburn Carole O Brien Denis Mockler Max Williams Assistant Treasurer N/A Geoffrey Webb Winsome Allen Phillip Reed N/A Nathan Whiteman
Peter Clancy John Robinson I want to ensure the continued existence of the SMSA by good corporate governance and by maintaining its relevance by expanding its positive influence in Sydney. This ensures that the SMSA will hold on to its proud traditions while also moving with the times and with changing technologies to ensure our future. I also have a keen interest in ensuring that the safety of SMSA members, employees, tenants, hirers and visitors remains paramount and that the building and its amenities are improved and well maintained. I believe that the SMSA can play an expanding role in supporting the educational endeavours of adult Australians, and I am working with the other members of the Board to refresh the SMSA s approach to fulfilling its mission. Peter is a perpetual member and a current of the SMSA. Peter is the Chair of the Commonwealth Safety Management Forum and has both a Masters in Business and a Masters in Safety. Peter brings to the SMSA his competence, experience, knowledge and work ethic from 20 years at the ABC as the National Safety Advisor.
Alan Creighton Vice President Geoffrey Webb & Alan has served on the Board of the SMSA in various capacities for a number of years. Alan has retired as a consulting Actuary but still remains a member of the Institute of Actuaries and attends an occasional meeting or conference to keep up with the profession. During his career he advised many large superannuation funds and after his retirement joined the Board of one of his clients. Other interests include travel and reading.
Greg Golledge Paul Reid & Greg has been a member of the for the past 5 years and has enjoyed borrowing from the Library, chatting with staff and attending the Christmas Party and other functions at the School. In his current position as a Senior Industrial Officer of the United Services Union, Greg has extensive experience in Employment Law, Workers Compensation Law and Personnel Management. Greg has a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Industrial Relations/Industrial Law and Sociology.
Denis Mockler Assistant Treasurer Geoffrey Webb In the over 7 years that I have been on the Board of the SMSA, initially as Treasurer and subsequently as the Assistant Treasurer, there has been a substantial improvement in the financial reserves of the SMSA. This has enabled the organisation to provide improved services for our members and to increase the scope of our activities within our Charter, including opening the Tom Keneally Centre. As chair of the Governance Committee, the procedures we have put in place and the ongoing review of the Board s processes have ensured that the Board has always acted in a proper manner. The Library remains the focus of the SMSA. It is essential that the Library is not left behind as the needs of our members and technology changes. It is essential that we provide skilled resources to ensure that this does not occur. I would also like to see the SMSA introduce a literary award in keeping with our Charter. This will help the SMSA achieve the recognition it so richly deserves. With my experience as a legal practitioner, I have been able to provide practical assistance to the Board in a wide range of their activities. I hope to be able to continue my active involvement on the Board of the SMSA to help the organisation achieve its full potential for the benefit of all members. Denis is the principal of a legal firm and is a former Acting Judge of the District Court He is currently an Assessor for the Motor Accidents Authority. Denis has been a board member in various positions over the past 8 years and is currently the chair of the Governance Committee and the assistant Treasurer. Denis has been a strong advocate for the library and for an increase in the benefits and roles available for members of the SMSA.
Phillip Reed N/A Nathan Whiteman As a member of the School, I use the Library on a regular basis. I am keen to get to know the members and their views regarding the School. I would like to become involved in the decisions made by the Board regarding the future direction of the School, keeping in mind the Charter. My Experience Insurance Claims. 7 Paul Reid President Greg Golledge I wish to stand for the position of in order to serve the best interests of the School. Paul has served on the board of the SMSA for a number of years. In 2010, he was appointed as Acting President and in 2011 was elected President. Paul is the father of two adult sons and a high-school aged daughter, as well as the very proud grandfather of three grandchildren. He is a Training and Educative Services Manager for the United Services Union. He develops and delivers a range of industrial relations-based training to people from diverse educational and employment backgrounds. Paul is a strong advocate of human rights and has been a past Secretary of an NGO. He has served on the Public Sector Industry Training Advisory Board as for around 10 years. Paul s varied interests include theatre, cinema, art, cooking, travel and, more recently, archery.
Reinhard Ronnebeck N/A John Robinson I believe that my past professional background and involvement in education and management could be of benefit of the SMSA. For many years, Reinhard has had a keen interest in adult education. He holds a PhD in clinical psychology and has worked as a principal clinical psychologist for the NSW Dept. of Health. In that role, he was the professional head of about 140 psychologists. Reinhard also worked as an honorary lecturer in psychology for Sydney University, the University of NSW and Macquarie University, training post-graduate students in psychology. His book on child management was published by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. At present, he is the member of the executive of the Eastern Suburbs region of the University of the Third Age. In addition, he provides lectures for U3A.
Thomas Thorburn Carole O Brien As a long-standing Board member, it is my wish to continue to help the SMSA in whatever capacity I can. Tom has been a member of the SMSA for over 50 years and a member of the Board for over 20 years. In 2010, he was made a Life Member for his services to the School. Before he retired he was the computer manager of a health fund. Tom keeps up with technology and was involved with the recent upgrade to SMSA s computer systems. He is Webmaster for the St Marys & District Historical Society. A keen ballroom dancer, he and his wife have also enjoyed a number of cruises including a circumnavigation of Australia. Tom is an avid reader of Detective novels and Science Fiction and has both an ipad and a Kindle for reading ebooks.
Max Williams N/A Winsome Allen I retired from corporate life after a career in financial services in both the public and private sectors. Prior to retiring, I was engaged in financial management in the insurance industry and was also company secretary to a computer facilities company. Since retiring, I have assisted SMSA as Acting Secretary for a period in 2010 and was also appointed to the Board to fill a casual vacancy in My outside interests revolve around a large family, including many grandchildren who provide a very enjoyable distraction. My membership of the SMSA goes back many years and, since my involvement at Board and Management level, I believe I can contribute to the ongoing development of an old but progressive organisation. My goal as a director of the SMSA would be to focus on ways to improve and extend the benefits enjoyed by SMSA members. Max is semi-retired following a career in Public Health, Administration and Insurance. Max was Company Secretary and Financial Controller to a Computer Company servicing a major Insurance Provider and has brought financial and information technology experience to the SMSA. Max is a family man who also has an interest in Theatre.
