2 VAL at a glance Vol.1 Issue.6 August- Oct 2009 Chairman, Mr.Anil Agarwal visits IIM Ahmedabad For India s future management professionals, the student community of IIM Ahmedabad, it was a unique experience to have a face to face interaction with th Mr. Anil Agarwal, Chairman Vedanta Resources, on 12 August, 2009, in their campus at Ahmedabad. Mr. Agarwal deliberated on the topic Global Growth Strategies at the forum. During this maiden visit to the country's premier institute, Mr. Agarwal briefed the students about the unique success story of the Vedanta Group's phenomenal growth & achievement. To the delight of the audience he also shared at length the story of his journey as an entrepreneur and the challenges he had to confront and overcome on the way. Speaking about the Group's competitiveness, the Chairman said, Though we are comparatively younger to other giants in the industry we have the advantage of having the lowest cost of production; almost 30% lower than any other players in the market. He took various questions from the students and affirmed that perseverance and an innate desire to play to win is a must for all budding entrepreneurs. Mr. Gautam Doshi (member Board of Directors-SIIL) and Mr. A Thirunavukkarasu, President, Group HR were also present and interacted with the students. Union Minister of State for Coal Shri Shriprakash Jaiswal visits Shri Shriprakash Jaiswal, Hon'ble Minister of State for Coal (IC),Govt of India paid an official visit to Val, along with key executives of the Ministry. He went around the plant premises and inspected the Independent Power Plant(IPP). During the course of his visit, he expressed satisfaction over the progress of the plant and praised the authorities for their contribution in making the plant operational. He wished for the speedy progress of the ongoing expansion project and early commissioning of the IPP and reassured VAL of his support in this endeavour. He personally interacted with the VAL officials and planted saplings inside the plant premises. VAL participates in the Coal & Power Summit at New Delhi With the objective of projecting the Company at national and international forums, VAL participated in two consecutive national events like the 2nd Coal Summit and the Power Conference at New Delhi. At the 2nd National Coal Summit 2009 held on 5th October 2009, Sri Sriprakash Jaiswal, Hon ble Minister of State for Coal(IC), Govt of India, Mr Bharatsinh Solanki, Hon ble Minister of State for Power, Govt of India, Mr Partha, S.Bhattacharyya, Chairman Coal India Ltd, Mr N C Jha, Director, Coal India Ltd, Mr Sandeep Agrawal, Project Director, VAL & Mr Abhiram Sharma, COO-Coal, BALCO were present. The delegates deliberated upon important topics pertaining to Indian Coal Industry, Current day Challenges of meeting fuel requirement, Allocation of separate Coal Blocks, Pricing Trends & Strategies, Environment friendly strategies of Coal India, Rail connectivity to upcoming IPPS & Steel plants. At the Power for All Conference organized by CII Mr. Sushil Kumar Shindhe Union Minister for Power was the Chief Guest. VAL was the principal sponsor in the event. 3 Lanjigarh at a glance Scholarship for Meritorious Students of Lanjigarh Three students of Government SSD High School, Lanjigarh received the 'Vedanta Meritorious Scholarship' from Dr. Mukesh Kumar, Chief Operating Officer of Vedanta Aluminium Limited, Lanjigarh on September 5, Each of the selected students was given a cash award of Rs and merit certificate. Vedanta Aluminium will also support these students in purchasing books for higher studies. Handing over the awards to the students, Dr. Mukesh Kumar, COO, VAL said, Vedanta is committed to the development of education in Kalahandi region and the scholarships will definitely inspire students to further excel in their studies. The principal of the School Mr. Suresh Chandra Acharya thanked Vedanta Aluminium for supporting the students and contributing towards development of education in the locality. VAL S CSR Initiative at Ambodola Vedanta Aluminium Limited, Lanjigarh donated a new fully operational Ambulance to the Satya Sai Seva Samiti at Ambodola on July 23, The emergency vehicle was dedicated for public Service by Dr. Mukesh Kumar, Chief Operating Officer, VAL. He handed over the Keys and necessary documents of the Vehicle to Mr. K. Tripati Rao convener of Satya Sai Seva Samiti. The Ambulance will be mainly used to facilitate emergency medical services to the people of Ambodola and its surrounding villages. Addressing the gathering Dr. Mukesh Kumar said, Vedanta makes every effort to promote comprehensive healthcare for the poor and the tribals in Lanjigarh and Ambodola area. The Ambulance will help people in the area to get access to health services in emergencies. He thanked the people for their constant support. Dr. Satya Sundar Biswal, Medical Officer of Ambodola PHC thanked Vedanta for the support. Accepting the ambulance, Mr. K. Tripati Rao said that there was no ambulance service available at Ambodola and the people had to face several problems, especially during emergencies. This Ambulance provided by Vedanta will be a great help for the people in the area, he added. CSR initiative through PPP mode at Kalahandi Bhawanipatna: As reaffirmation of its commitment to provide improved health care service to the people of Lanjigarh, Vedanta Aluminium Limited (VAL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Zilla Swasthya Samiti, Kalahandi to upgrade the infrastructure, management and delivery of health service of Lanjigarh Area Hospital, which provides health care to the people of Biswanathpur block under PPP mode. This is the first ever Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) led Public Private Partnership effort in Orissa Health sector. The MOU was signed with the concurrence of Govt of Orissa and under the guidance of Mr. RS Gopalan, District Collector Kalahandi. Dr. Mukesh Kumar, Chief Operating Officer, Vedanta Aluminium Limited and Dr. Sushil Rath, Chief District Medical Officer, Kalahandi signed the MoU on September 23, 2009 at Bhawanipatna. 3

4 Lanjigarh at a glance Vice-Chairman inaugurates New Block of DAV Vedanta International School Pool Tournament held at Lanjigarh Mr. Navin Agarwal, Vice Chairman of Vedanta Resources inaugurated the new block of DAV Vedanta International School at Lanjigarh on August 13, The new block includes latest facilities such as Science laboratory, Computer Laboratory, Math Laboratory, Library and Art & Craft room, in addition to class rooms for students. Senior management team members of Vedanta, Mr. MS Mehta, CEO, Vedanta Resources; M. Siddiqi, CEO (Aluminium Sector); Mr. Pramod Suri, CEO (Operations); Dr. Mukesh Kumar, COO, VAL, Lanjigarh, Dr. HK Mohanty, Regional Director, DAV Institutions, Ms. S. Chakraborty, Principal, DAV Vedanta International School were also present on the occasion. Taking a break from the monotony of routine work and encouraging sports activities among employees of VAL Lanjigarh, the Sports Committee here organized a Pool Tournament. A total 86 no of participants played 86 matches held in the tournament, both in doubles and singles section for girls and boys. Raj Sekhar won in the boys singles match and Kapil Behera became the runners up. Raj Sekhar & Ramu Naidu won against Ajit & Rahul in the doubles category. 5 at a glance Workshop On Industrial Safety : A workshop on Industrial Safety and Accident Prevention was organized at Hotel City Palace recently in. The workshop was jointly organized by the Directorate of Factories and Boilers and Vedanta Aluminium Ltd. Speaking at this occasion, Mr Jagar Singh, Commissioner cum Secretary, Labour and Employment, Government of Orissa stressed on the necessity for special focus on safety in plants. Peace Marathon to commemorate UN International Peace Day st 21 Sept'09: Hundreds of runners including people from all walks of Life, from School Children to Octogenarians, with messages for peace scrawled on their white T-shirts and Peace Flags held high, participated in 's first Celebratory Peace Marathon. This mini marathon was organized by Vedanta Aluminium Ltd (VAL) in association with the Junior Chambers International (JCI) to commemorate the occasion of United Nations International Peace Day celebrated every year st world over on 21 of September. Even before the first light of dawn lit up the Manmohan ME School ground, the starting point, runners posed for pictures with their fingers parted in the victory sign. Nearly 300 Students from almost all major schools of town, in their uniform made the gathering look like a carnival. Vedanta Partners District Malaria Control Programme at th 16 Sept'09: As a part of its corporate social responsibility, Vedanta Aluminium Limited (VAL) has taken an initiative to augment the Central Govt. run District Malaria Control Program for, which was launched earlier by the Govt. as a part of its National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme (NVBDCP). An Inaugural function was held here at the Health Sub Centre in Village Durlaga to launch the joint efforts taken in this direction by VAL where Pre medicated Long Lasting Mosquito Bed Nets were distributed free of cost to the Village Households by Dr. Narayan Chandra Acharya, CDMO and Mr. Jagat Indu Parija, VP, VAL in presence of the Gaon Kalyan Samity (A NRHM committee at village level). This initiative, we hope will help in the drastic reduction of instances of Malaria in the District Mr. Jagat Indu Parija, VP VAL said. 5

6 at a glance VAL S IT Head bags best CIO-100 Award It is a matter of Great Pride for Vedanta Aluminium as its IT Head Mr. Subrata Banerjee has bagged the best CIO-100 Award for the year This Award is being given by IDG-India s CIO Magazine. The 2009 CIO 100 awards were presented by renowned IT visionary Kiran Karnik at Goa in a glitzy ceremony on September 5. This Award recognizes organizations that exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology (IT). Puja Ceremony At Potline - 2 Blood Donation Camp Organized at : A mega Blood Donation Camp was organised by Vedanta Aluminium Ltd (VAL) in association with the District Red Cross Society on 15th June 2009 at the Trainee hostel Recreation hall of VAL. The response was tremendous. It surpassed the previous year s record of collecting 113 units. A total of 127 units of Blood was collected for the first time at a camp in. Catchy slogans like Be proud to be a Donor, No one shall die for want of Blood were displayed at prominent places throughout the plant and on notice boards which resulted in this overwhelming response from employees and others associated with Vedanta. Shri Abhijit Pati Chief Operating Officer VAL took the lead along with the HR Head Shri Kaustav Rattan Kundu which inspired others to donate their blood. Football Match at : A friendly Football Match was organized on 13th Septmber 2009 at the playground near R & R Colony at between the technical and nontechnical team of VAL. The nontechnical team delighted the audience with their outstanding performance and won the match by 1-0. The runners up team also played with great spirit. 6
