He appreciated both NID and IWST for coming together and taking up this kind of unique programme which would also be useful to KSFIC. He appealed to august gathering to get innovative things through the programme. He felt that this kind of programme gives further inspiration to KSFIC. He also expressed that top class designers,

entrepreneurs and researchers who are assembled for this programme should interact and get benefitted from each others ideas. Finally, he wished all the success to the programme. Dr. S.R. Shukla, Scientist-E, IWST proposed the Vote of Thanks. He addressed the Hon ble Chief Guest Mr. A.K. Verma, KSFIC, Dr. S. Ghoshal from NID, Sri S.C. Joshi, Director, IWST, Group Coordinator (Research), IWST, invited designers, participants from industries, scientists form the Institute and expressed his gratitude to all the participants who came to attend the programme. Mr. Vivin Agarwal, Product Designer and Architect presented his talk on Wood of Future Surviving the Chinese Invasion. He expressed that Chinese products are picking up fast, as they are cheaper in cost and explained how the Chinese products are manufactured and talked about the background for these products. He told that the scientific information on timber such as its varieties, properties, growth, insect protection etc. is difficult to understand by the business community because their technical knowledge is limited. Business community knowledge to be imbibed in step by step manner, they need to understand the competitions, the role of wood about fifty years back, present and after twenty years, and expressed that role of wood is changing continuously. While explaining about Chinese production he told (i) industries get assistance from state, i. e. state owned industries, there is no competition; (ii) quantum of production i.e. large scale production; (iii) vertical integration i.e. all accessory items like adhesive, fasteners etc. also made at the same place; (iv) strategy of global marketing and disciplined labourers. Mr. Agarwal told that Indians live in a democratic set up and our potentiality is not utilized optimally. We have to come forward and take initiatives to fight against Chinese invasion. He opined that scientific knowledge should be shared with the industrialists in their language. Sri S.C. Joshi, Director, IWST expressed that industrialists do not come forward to share the knowledge and told that Government organizations have some limitation like mandates. He suggested that a bridge is to be formed between industry and R&D institutes. He also told that IWST is ready to give technical knowledge to the industries and invited the wood based industrialists to come to join hands with IWST and share the Institute s knowledge and they should also support IWST. Mr. Vivin Agarwal expressed that there is no Institution in India providing the Masters degree in wood business. Workers are there, owners are there, but there are no managerial and supervisory level persons available. One of the participant, Mr. Kabeer, a wood-based businessman expressed that even though he browses net regularly, he is not aware of this Institute and tried to contact FRI, Dehra Dun. He expressed that he wpuld like to develop the linkage with IWST. Director, IWST informed that IWST has website, FAQ and Ask Us facility for people to interact with the Institute. Director also appealed the business people to join with IWST. Mr. Kabeer wanted to join the forum where joint proposal can be floated for Government s assistance and promotion in business, like China does. Director, IWST told that he will be with the forum and ready to give our resource to the people. He explained about Green India Mission and his proposal to the Minister and its present status. He expressed that industry people are to be looked into, go forward taking further steps after giving due consideration to the reality. Dr. Ghosal expressed that as far as NID is concerned, huge funding and lot of project commitments are there. He opined that funding agencies such as CSIR, DST etc. are flooded with lot of project proposals but the link is missing. Everything needs to be roped in and strategic marketing is also required.

He also opined that people should be taken into confidence in how to work together, how to go forward on various policy issues. He also suggested that IWST can think of CFC, supported by wood based industries which would be an innovation hub. He invited the industry to come forward for these kinds of endeavor as in long run it would be beneficial for the both the industry and the institute. Director, IWST opined that if industry comes forward, early creation of CFC would be easier. While discussing about the wood of future, Mr. Agarwal opined that wood is an intermediate raw material and felt that now-a-days consumers are conscious about everything, the value of life system, they are more informed and their knowledge is quite high. Along with this, they also have the environmental consciousness, life cycle of wood, eco-friendly products, ease of use, its convertibility should be taken into consideration. If we combine together, we can link towards leverage the consciousness. He also talked about the new role of wood and told that we have to make up our mind on manufacturing strategy, find out where our strength lies. Since we have resources, we can manufacture a lot, China can not compete with India in wood sector as they do not have resources like ours. Director, IWST informed that we have about 1600 wood/timber species, but market is mostly using only 50 species. IWST can help by suggesting alternate species for various applications. Mr. Agarwal appealed to the manufacturers, why we make only furniture and doors, new products should also be invented. He suggested road map for every industrialist and appealed to understand the existing condition. Promotion of different domains in the industry such as the products, product design, manufacturing technology, skilled HR and ideal distribution is the need of the hour. He told that Institute generally talks about the science and technology but when money comes in between, there will be more value for science. Technical and scientific knowledge should be workable for business community.. Mr. Kiran, Expert Designer, Tycka India Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore presented his thoughts on Challenges in designing. He expressed that the products are to be eco-friendly where one has to concentrate on desirability, necessity, feasibility, viability etc. He opined that there are wide variety of things i.e. products where planning, manufacturing, recycling methods are involved. He also explained the different stage of products designing, processing the products. He also discussed different topics of designing, ie. to make it less complex and less space items, multifunctional facility, product service, reducing the material variety, reduce size and weight and avoiding the use of toxins. He also opined that there are lot of factors that are involved in product designing. Cost implication, eco-designing and suitability should necessarily be taken care off. Director, IWST expressed that designers and architects have taboo towards government institutes and appealed that there should be regular interaction which would be beneficial for all the parties. Afternoon Session: Dr. S.K. Sharma, Head, Wood Properties and Uses Division, Institute of Wood Science and Technology, Bangalore briefly presented the Institute activities as well as research objectives of the WPU division. He explained about the alternate timbers, timber identification service and certification process. One of the participant asked about the musical instruments, explained about musical instrument made using synthetic materials such as plastics, so that cost wise it will come down, but not very eco-friendly way of using the material. He wanted that IWST should suggest some alternate woods for certain important musical instruments and used in plenty by the masses. Director, IWST told that the institute would like

to join music industry, and would like to go for large scale requirement at initial stage and alongwith that also would like to deal with the individual instruments. Dr. Ghosal also supported by expressing his ideas that use of material of mass impact should be approached first. Even though we do not have masters, we can train the people at the basic level, so that cheating in terms of species adulteration will not occur in the market. Sri M.P. Rao, Marketing Manager, BIESSE Manufacturing Co. Pvt. Ltd, Nermangala, Bangalore (a company engaged in manufacturing of Italian Wood Working Machineries ),presented the video films of different kinds of wood working machines alongwith its uses and cost. He informed the audience that in Indian Panelwood industry accounts for about 90% and solid wood share is mere 10%. He also told that there is no management level talent and even skilled manpower and labourers are not available. He explained in detail about door processing machines, window processing, special carving, stair case manufacturing machine etc. Director, IWST told that we need better people in wood working, who know planning, value addition of wood usage etc. He informed that our institute can help by training manpower, supervisor and managerial level. He opined that the public-private partnership (PPP) model is very much required to go forward. Mr. Aggarwal told that that from the Industry side, money is not a problem to train the people, only proper guidance and direction is required. They want IWST to be like a platform and many industry oriented technical and management programme can be initiated. But marketing is only problem, so a certain kind of strategy and proper planning is required by IWST. He appealed IWST to translate scientific knowledge into business objectives. Director, IWST questioned how knowledge will be marketed and who the takers are. He quoted the example of Bangalore University for tie-up and MoU for taking wood science in Master s degree level, almost it took more than two years. He also explained about his discussion with a State Minister. Mr. Agarwal suggested that Universities are not required, giving diploma is sufficient from the Institute. He told that he is ready to provide the students and other support. He also opined that one year course is sufficient for this purpose. Director, IWST appealed the participants to meet him often to discuss various issues of mutual interest. He told about our Advance Woodworking and Training Center located in the IWST campus and he is highly interested in its revival. He also felt that it is right time to market our knowledge. Mr. Agarwal suggested that he would prepare concept notes containing what to do and how to do and for this real ground linkage is required. He opined that educational Institutes are only sustainable market. Dr. Ghosal extended the NID s help and guidance in this educational setup as collaborative and joint programme for the industries. He also suggested that we have to jointly make out the programme how technical matter are to be to be done technologically. The faculty members can join on 80% basis and remaining 20% experts come from external sources. He suggested skill development programme is absolutely required, and also opined that both organizations keeping their mandates in mind have to design the training programme for 2-3 days for the industry people, provided IWST gives the space then there are lot of prospective takers. Director, IWST agreed for the same in principle. Mr. Agarwal suggested that we can generate our own fund, no need for Govt. money. He quoted the example of MBA courses, explained about the business model which suits to IWST. Director principally agreed with Mr. Agarwal and appealed him to meet once again to proceed further. Mr. Agarwal gave the guarantee for the success of the business model he will be proposing to IWST. All the industrialists who

participated in the workshop were ready to contribute to the education centre. Mr. Kabeer was interested to have operational engineering training and certification of wood. He told that industries will make use of it, he is ready to join as annual member if any forum is available in the Institute. Regarding the certification process, industry people were willing to accept and utilize and extended their support. Dr. Ghosal suggested to find out how IPIRTI issues certificates to the Industries and asked whether IPIRTI is affiliated with BIS. He also explained that there are different varieties of certifications. Director, IWST appealed the industrialists to link IWST with BIS in solid wood work and especially wood certification. He also explained that IWST has done lot of work on Rubber wood, Acacias, coconut wood and solid wood, lot of various usages of different timbers are suggested. He expressed his keen interest in BIS activities mostly on the solid wood. Dr. Goshal suggested that there should be an efficient scheme for filling the gaps. Dr. Goshal gave an example of Apparel Training programme and also suggested that in similar line, IWST should also start working. The training should be framed and conceptualize properly along with technical skill up gradation including wood identification component, so that programme shape will be holistic. He suggested that 3 days training programme and opined that business people want everything tricky and faster so that 3-4 subject modules on different topics are to be combined with attractive jargons and commercial point of view also to be taken care of. He suggested that in Need Assessment Study, a chapter on Standardization and certification should also be included. Mr. Kabeer expressed he is short of technicians and that no Institute trains carpenters in South India. Director, IWST appealed that we will forget about the past and all apprehensions. At present Industries should tell their requirement and IWST will work on them seriously and would play serious role for wood based industries. He also suggested developing PPP models with industry and bringing out various kind of linkages. He suggested to conceptualize different type of courses based on industry need like 3 to 4 days course for lower level and supervisory level; 6 months to 1 year diploma course for managerial level. He also emphasized the need for taking measures for certification of wood. In concluding session of the programme, Mr. Ashuthosh Srivastava expressed that the programme had enthrawling discussions and exchange of great ideas. He thanked all the participants, Director, IWST, experts and other key persons. He told that after this programme, we could definitely see a road ahead to us. He assured that as starting point, the conclusions of this programme will be discussed in detail and will also organize two days workshop very soon.
