3 I2E Event INTRODUCTION Industry and Institution Engagement (I2E) is a programme organized by MARA-Japan Industrial Institute (MJII) and MARA Aerospace & Technologies Sdn. Bhd (M-AeroTech). The program aims to develop collaboration opportunities and networking between strategic industries and higher education institutes. It also serves as a channel of exposure for academia and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to showcase the latest technology with the theme Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0). EVENT CONTENTS The contents of the event are: Memorandum of Agreements (MoA) Exchange Letter of Intention (LoI) Handing Over Ceremony Launching of Centre of Excellence (CoE) Industrial Talk: Industrial Revolution 4.0 Forum: Industrial Revolution 4.0 Industrial Talk: Internet of Things Dialogue: Internet of Things Industry Exhibition Workshop Research Sharing ORGANISER The organiser of the event is MJII. This institute provides students with industrial knowledge and hands-on skills in electronics engineering, incorporating Japanese working culture and aspiring entrepreneurship. MJII offers five diploma programs and is accredited by the MQA. MJII uses industry standard equipment incorporating the latest technology. OBJECTIVE The objectives for this events are: Developing collaboration opportunities and networking among industries and higher education institutes Providing exposure to academia and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of the latest technology with the theme: industrial revolution 4.0. Sharing expertise between MJII and industries or higher education CO-ORGANISER M-AeroTech is the co-organiser and industry partner for I2E. M-AeroTech is a wholly owned subsidiary of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), focusing on development of the aerospace and other strategic industries through ecosystem enhancement. This is in line with MARA s vision to provide high quality jobs to its human capital output. 4 HIGHLIGHTS We are bridging the gap between industry and the MARA education system. Industry and Institution Engagement is a platform for MARA to engage with industry. 5 EVENT ANALYSIS During the event, participants were asked to fill- up the online survey form. The survey used M- AeroTech website platform to collect the data. The majority of respondents were from the industry at 46%, the largest single group. As expected, most of the industry attendees came from related industries such as electronics and manufacturing. Private institutions and public institutions together made up 40% of the participants. Therefore, our responses indicated a healthy mix between industry and institutional attendees of I2E In line with our projection, participants from government agencies made up the smallest identified group at 8%. 4 Industry and Institution Engagement (I2E) YH Dato Azhar Abdul Manaf, Director General of MARA (centre), launching the I2E event.

6 EVENT ANALYSIS Industry revolution 4.0 will create disruptions in the labour market by eliminating some of the low- skilled and/or repetitive jobs, at the same time increasing the shortage of talented and highly- skilled workers. OVERALL RATING Overall satisfaction rating revealed some interesting details. The responses indicate the event was conducted successfully, with 98% of participants rating it good, very good or excellent. The majority of the participants rate this event very good at 51%. However, there is still a need to improve as 2% of respondents rated the event as poor. One possible explanation for this poor rating may be the venue. The exhibition space and stage area were not separated. The noise from the exhibition may have affected audience concentration during the symposium. THEME OF THE EVENT The theme of I2E 2017 was Towards Industrial Revolution % of respondents rated the theme as good, very good and excellent. 43% of respondents agreed the theme was very good. Interestingly, none of the respondents disagreed on the topic. We can conclude that the theme performs well in attracting industry and institutional participation in the event. Participants told us the event opened their mind towards the challenges of shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution driven by the speed, the breadth and the complete systems innovation of technological change underway. 7 EVENT ANALYSIS Despite its many benefits, the Internet of Things (IoT) poses a real threat to the cybersecurity of public and private sector systems. CONTENT OF THE EVENT The strength of I2E is the content delivered by industry experts. Most of the speakers were key industry players, involved directly with sectors related to industry revolution 4.0 and IoT. 94% of respondents gave favorable feedback on the content. Of the overall, 48% of respondents rate the content as very good. This demonstrates that the organiser had selected the relevant people to deliver engaging content. The speakers consisted of experienced leaders from leading industry players. In addition, other prominent companies such as AMD, Tekmark, Festo were also involved in the exhibition. 8 EVENT ANALYSIS INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION 4.0 SESSION Respondents expressed a significant positive feedback for both the Industry Talk and Industry Forum Sessions. This is likely due to the participants interested in The Fourth Industrial Revolution and the current trends combining automation, digital technologies and manufacturing industries. Participants told us they were looking to update their knowledge of the emergence of "smart factories". None of the respondents rated the sessions as poor. The forum highlighted the new horizon of data driven economy. Represented at the forum were Malaysia Automotive Institute as moderator, with the members consisting of representatives from the National Aerospace Industry Coordinating Office (NAICO), Strand Aerospace Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and UMW Corporation Sdn Bhd. Most of the example and case studies focused on the aerospace industry as a driver for the economy. Technology is contextualised as an enabler for the future aerospace factory. Over 60% of the respondents rated the forum as very good. Smart factories will increase the efficiency of future industry. Industry and Institution Engagement (I2E) 7

9 EVENT ANALYSIS INTERNET OF THINGS SESSION The Internet of Things (IoT) session addressed the current technologies and updates, benefits and challenges to creating the next generation of digital computing, data and communication infrastructure. In this session speakers from SIRIM, Telekom Malaysia, Huawei and Tektronix shared their experiences. The forum also highlighted the change in the technology landscape for organisations and the important factors for successful device to cloud architecture. Almost all respondents gave positive feedback, with no one rating the event as poor. 8 During the IoT dialogue, speakers discussed the emergence of the Internet of Things ecosystem with small devices, actuators and sensors. The dialogue was moderated by the President of the Malaysia IoT Association, with representatives from Favoriot Sdn Bhd and Tekmark Sdn Bhd as panelists. Interestingly, this dialogue highlighted lack of human capital to support IoT industry growth, representing a great potential for job opportunities for the upcoming generation. 10 EVENT ANALYSIS REASON FOR JOINING THE EVENT Most respondents indicated that networking opportunities was the most important reason for joining the event. Participants found it beneficial in making connections, and building relationships which will help in their future business. 19% of respondents indicated that they wished to meet the experts and influencers of the subject matter, the second most important reason. The third most important reason for the respondents is to seek educational opportunities and collaboration with MARA. REASON FOR COLLABORATION WITH MJII Technologies sharing was the most important reason respondents cited when seeking collaboration with MJII. The second most important reason was looking for student or staff internship with 26% of the respondents indicating this. In third at 22% was research and development collaboration opportunities. Human capital development opportunities was cited as a reason by only 19% of respondents. Industry and Institution Engagement (I2E) 9

11 RECOMMENDATION Overall the event has successfully achieved its objective to create a dialogue between industry and institutions. The event not only allowed deeper engagement with industry, but also promoted MJII capabilities to the industry. However, the industry players present showed more interest in collaborating for research and technology instead of human capital development. This reflects how new and unexplored the Industry 4.0 field is. Players are still grasping what to do before they can consider human capital. We recommend that MJII follow up from the B2B discussions with specific industry engagements, meetings and visits. MJII must structure an industrial engagement programme to aggressively capture industry research and technology requirements, and implement them with close coordination with industry. We also recommend that I2E be held at least once every two years. This will allow MJII to display its progress in industry collaboration. It will serve as a testament on the outcome of Industry-Institutional engagement and thereby encourage further industry collaboration with the MARA system. Future I2E events and industry engagements should also include showcasing student capability so as to improve their reputation and employability. We note that I2E 2017 only gave limited exposure to student capabilities. Future events could address this by including specific seminars, workshops and/or presentations where students and alumni could showcase their projects.
