Since the 1960s the country has developed at a rapid rate into one of the most important national economies worldwide taking global leadership in several technology sectors. On its journey through Germany the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy would like to find new co-operation partners for Korea. The group of participants consists of a small, intimate group with representatives from producing German companies, from the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy and various representatives from different areas. 14 South Korea is looking for Franconian investors (Source: Nürnberger Nachrichten 11/2013, original text written by Gregor le Claire) In recent decades South Korea has emerged as one of the world s leading economic powers in Germany however the peninsula between China and Japan is still widely unknown. But according to the Nuremberg Chamber of Commerce and Industry this is now meant to change. Investors are attracted by good business opportunities. The first impression often can mislead. To visitors from the West Korea was known as some kind of hermit area. Quiet. Uncommunicative. Introverted. That s all past now. The South of the country saw an economic upturn which even overshadows the German economic miracle. Between 1960 and today Korea s GDP grew by 300 times. Nowadays the country with a population of 50 million is one of the main economic powers in the world playing a leading role regarding cars, electronics and cell phones. South Korea did a fantastic job within only a few decades, said Armin Siegert, Head of International Business of the Nuremberg Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Currently 294 companies from the Chamber s district maintain contacts with the peninsula 15% more than ten years ago. But in Sieger s eyes this is too slow though: There still is a lot more potential. Especially in the field of pharmacy, automation, energy and environment. Armin Siegert pushes at an open door with Kim Ho regarding his wish for closer relations. Kim is the vice president of Kitia, which is part of the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. It s their task to attract foreign investors. A goal which has been increasingly pursued by Asia for a couple of years now. 14

15 Multinational companies such as Hyundai or Samsung contributed to Korea s rise to power: The so called Jaebol became octopi having a finger in every pie. Hyundai for instance not only built cars, but also ships, machines, electrical appliances, and houses; they sold insurances and ran department stores. What in the beginning helped to speed up the development is now regarded as obstructive. According to critics the system seems to be prone to corruption and nepotism, it s too hierarchic and not flexible enough. Furthermore the economy should be less dependent on a handful of giants. This opens the door for foreign companies especially since the free trade agreement with the EU in Subsequently imports from Germany shot up to a record high of 13,4 billion. To ensure that the positive trend continues the Korean government in Seoul came up with a lot of ideas. Free-trade areas, tax incentives, start-up funding: Kim to lays his cards on the table. Also Sven Schmidt (speaker of Leoni) reports of these kind of start-up difficulties. In 2008 Leoni took over half of the supplier Daekyeung. As they weren t able to handle the management they decided to completely gobble Daekyeung up in earlier than originally planned. In this year they want to profit from their investment.
