2 A Message from the Executive Director In the past 30 years women have emerged on the philanthropic landscape as a visible and bold presence. Interest in understanding how and why women give has grown exponentially, prompting researchers to examine gender issues in philanthropy from new angles. Through a kaleidoscope of innovative and creative structures, women around the world are leveraging their intellectual, social, and financial capital for the common good. What influences women in their philanthropic decision making? What has recent research revealed about donor intent? What is the impact of donor education on women donors? Do giving circles and women s funds have the resources and capacity to effect social change? What are the gender differences in philanthropy and why do they matter? What leadership qualities and characteristics are needed to bring women s philanthropy initiatives to scale? I invite you to join your colleagues to explore these issues during the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy s 20th Annual Symposium Moving Women s Philanthropy Forward: Influences, Intent, Impact. This program is designed around the Center s mission to increase the understanding of philanthropy and improve its practice. 3 About the 20th Annual Symposium Unique features of this symposium include scholars, researchers, practitioners, and donors engaged in lively, cross-discipline give-and-take; interactive keynote and breakout sessions; limited attendance to assure small group discussions; and an opportunity for reflection away from the press of daily demands. The Center s annual symposium is an opportunity to step back from day-to-day demands and reflect on the changing philanthropic environment. This is not a how-to conference; it will offer an overview of the evolving women s philanthropy field, share current research about the role of gender in philanthropy, and connect research to practice. About the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University is a leading academic center that increases the understanding of philanthropy and improves its practice worldwide through research, teaching, public service, public affairs, and donor-centered education programs in philanthropy, fundraising, and management of nonprofit organizations. The Center fosters relationships, increases knowledge, and helps to develop the next generation of nonprofit practitioners, scholars, volunteers, and philanthropists. A part of the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), the Center also collaborates closely with the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Women s Philanthropy Institute and the Center on Philanthropy The Women s Philanthropy Institute (WPI), a part of the Center on Philanthropy since 2004, focuses on donor-centered education to broaden the base of philanthropy; research to better understand donor motivations, rationale, impact, and effectiveness; and the dissemination of essential information and research. Working in collaboration with the Center s research team, the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving, and The Fund Raising School, WPI is uniquely positioned to help women donors be more informed, strategic, and effective in their philanthropy. 7 Presentation of the Henry A. Rosso Medal Each year the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University recognizes individuals for lifetime achievement in ethical fundraising. The award was created in honor of Hank Rosso, a cofounder of the Center on Philanthropy and a founding director of The Fund Raising School. The first award was presented to Mr. Rosso in 1990 as a tribute to his work in establishing a means for development professionals to learn about ethical fundraising and his leadership in forging concepts of discipline and dignity in the profession. Mr. Rosso was a pioneer in establishing fundraising as a profession with a philosophy, a body of knowledge, a code of ethics, and standards of practice. He led the movement to ground the professional practice of philanthropy in academic research and in formal undergraduate and graduate education. Mr. Rosso s teaching and his philosophy of ethical philanthropic fundraising have inspired generations of fund raisers and donors, and his books and ideas are still considered essential for fundraising professionals. Since 1990, 35 distinguished men and women have been honored for their outstanding contributions to the profession. The 2008 awards will be presented at the dinner on Thursday, November 13.
