Community & Charitable Foundations 2012 ANNUAL REPORT
THE RESERVE AT LAKE KEOWEE Community Foundation The Reserve at Lake Keowee Community Foundation is a non-profit organization, created to enhance the quality of life and sense of community for property owners of The Reserve at Lake Keowee. The Foundation has four major functions serving both the property owners and general public: Environment: to promote environmental stewardship and provide a greater understanding and appreciation of the area s natural resources. Education: to provide educational and enrichment programs for Reserve property owners and the surrounding community. Arts: to promote cultural initiatives for property owners and the surrounding community, with both visual and performing arts. Outreach: to assist charitable organizations and facilitate property owner volunteerism in Pickens County and surrounding communities.
Watercolor painting by 2012 Artist-in-Residence, Russell Jewell. The Community Foundation is funded by a transfer fee of all real estate sales at The Reserve at Lake Keowee. In 2012 the Community Foundation completed its fifth year under the guidance of its executive director and naturalist. Close to 50 different events, featuring a variety of speakers and performers, were scheduled in The attendance for all these events neared 2,000 property owners and guests. Special thanks to Robert Clement for his four years of service as a Foundation Board Member.
ENVIRONMENT The 2012 Environmental program included the following: Trail walks and personalized nature tours of many Reserve owners private home sites guided by naturalist, Jeff Breazeale. Jeff used his science background and extensive knowledge of the area to highlight special natural features and animal habitats along the trails and on individual owners home sites. Foundation Director, Kathryn Gravely is a certified Master Naturalist and Master Gardener. Like Jeff, these certifications allow her to be a resource for property owners. Kathryn and Jeff will gladly conduct private tours of the trails and are available to identify plants on Reserve Members property. Trail Journal was updated seasonally and available on The Reserve website as a great source of information for Reserve property owners and the general public. Plant & Animal Species Guide created as a Member resource. Birds of Prey Demonstration with Naturalist Michael Skinner Environmental Experts conducted demonstrations and led tours, classes, and workshops both within The Reserve and surrounding areas like Loon Tours on Lake Jocassee, watching for Raptors to migrate past Caesars Head, & more!
Wild Bird Habitats along the golf course and wetland areas were maintained, continuing to help protect, preserve, and observe wood ducks, bluebirds, and others native to our area. Audubon Certification process began in hopes of certifying The Reserve s Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. Oconee Bells (shortia galacifolia) were planted in The Reserve. The first successful installation of this rare wildflower will be followed by a second planting in winter of Adopt a Highway program continued in 2012, maintaining the section of Highway 133 that runs parallel to The Reserve s property line as a quarterly clean up project. Reserve Members donned their orange vests and collected a total of 675 pounds of trash proof that The Reserve is making a positive difference! Keowee Lake Sweep and Adopt-an-Island programs were a large part of the Foundation s commitment to the environment in Volunteers took part in the bi-annual lake sweeps in April and September as part of the Adopt-an-Island program led by FOLKS (Friends of Lake Keowee Society). The Reserve is responsible for maintaining islands 17 A, B, C and D, plus several miles of shoreline as part of this community-wide effort to preserve one of the purest lakes in North America.
EDUCATION The 2012 Educational program included the following: On-site Workshops and Demonstrations included Artist -in-residence activities with Russell Jewell, watercolorist, who led two classes: watercolor techniques and photographing what you want to paint. Musical Performances introducing music by the lake with blues guitarist Mac Arnold and jazz group Second Hand Jazz, plus Walt Liniger blues guitarist and harmonica player. Fireside Chats: Littlejohn Grill with Vince Jackson; JT Horton, Clemson Women s Golf Coach.
Educational Field Trips explored nearby historical sites like the Biltmore Estate & Gardens, state parks, and even included painting classes in a local vineyard. Participants enjoyed the chance to travel and learn more about the local area! Musical performances in the lakeside amphitheater like blues legend Mac Arnold and Second Hand Jazz drew large crowds of music lovers to this special Reserve venue.
ARTS The 2012 Arts program included the following: Supported works of high artistic merit in literary, media, performing and visual arts by hosting programs featuring such artists and sponsoring the 2012 Artist-in-Residence. The Hill House Art Gallery, open to the membership and general public, featured original art from regional artists. Six total exhibits were rotated throughout the year and included gallery talks with each artist Artwork displayed in the Hill House Gallery Completed a fifth Artist-in-Residence program with watercolor artist Russell Jewell. Russell Jewell is an artist/educator from Easley, South Carolina. For more than twenty-seven years, he has carved a career out of the combining forces of art and education. Jewell's qualifications for such a career include a Masters of Art from the University of South Carolina and a Doctorate of Education in Art from the University of Georgia. He is a certified Advanced Placement teacher and has received certification by the National Board for Professional Teachers.
A variety of classes were hosted, including collaborations with Clemson University as well as local artists and instructors. One of the most unique classes followed an inspirational tour of the Wyeth Collection in Greenville. Musical performances were offered throughout the year including the entertaining blues tunes of the legendary Mac Arnold and Plate Full O Blues, Clemson s TigeRoar, plus a return visit from guitarist Wale Liniger. Meet the Artist receptions allowed owners and guests the opportunity to meet visiting artists, experience their work and learn about their inspiration for each piece. Especially inspiring were the Blue View Artists: four Pickens County artists with vary different talents and styles exhibited everything from oil paintings to ironwork in the Hill House Gallery. 10 OUTREACH An Outreach Committee comprised of Reserve property owners was established in 2007 to research and recommend outreach volunteer projects with various non-profit organizations in the surrounding community. Annually, the Foundation, a 501 (c) 4, transfers a minimum of 10% of its income to the newly established Charitable Foundation, a 501 (c) 3. The Charitable Foundation then combines this with proceeds from the Charitable Golf Classic for donation to selected area charities. The Charitable Foundation disbursed a total of $35,500 in donations to the 2012 recipients chosen by the membership. The total dollar amount represents 10% of the Community Foundation s 2011 income ($4,800) from transfer fees, combined with the proceeds from the 2012 Charitable Golf Classic ($30,700). The 2012 Charitable Foundation donation was distributed in December. A total of $35,500 was donated to the 2012 Outreach Recipients Helping Hands, $8,875 Pickens County Meals on Wheels, $8,875 Prevent Child Abuse Pickens County, $8,875 A.R. Lewis Elementary - Weekend Backpack Program, $8,875 The Foundation Outreach Committee pictured with the 2012 Outreach Recipients.
