After we were selected to host the 00 ACE, we formed the organizing committee in 000. hile the Hong Kong ociety for Emergency edicine and urgery (HKE) is the official member of the Asian ociety of Emergency edicine (AE); the Hong Kong College of Emergency edicine (HKCE) is responsible for most of the academic activities and training of emergency medicine in Hong Kong. Hence, initially we did have problems in deciding the hosting organization. inally, we worked out that both the HKCE and HKE were co-hosting the event while HKE will bear all the financial risk of the conference. During the four years of preparation, we have held over twenty-four meetings. ere were two major decisions to make during the preparation. e first one was the change of the conference-organizing agent, which involved some additional expenditure but would ensure a more reliable service. e second one was the decision to defer the conference from 00 to 00 because of the AR epidemic in Asian countries in 00. Judging from the final outcome, both decisions were correct. hile most of the organizing committee members had been doing a good job for the success of the event, special mention have to give to Dr. a Hing an and his team of volunteers. After Dr. a joined the organizing committee halfway during the preparation, he managed to mobilize a large number of nearly 0 doctors and nurses, and some of his close friends to help in the conference. Despite these volunteers were not professional staff; they performed a fantastic job in various positions in the conference. e area that received the most appreciation from the participants was the information technology support; which was advance in technology, reliable in the performance and user friendly to the speakers. As we were putting in a lot of manpower and money in preparation of the event, our greatest fear was poor attendance and failure to recover the expenditure. o our relief, the total attendance of the conference was and we made a positive balance of more than $00,000. e were able to sell booths, which contributed to nearly half of the income. e success of the conference was more than the positive balance and the huge attendance. e conference also provided a good variety of quality lectures and an excellent opportunities for emergency doctors, nurses and paramedics in Asia to meet and develop friendship. During the conference, I was elected as the new president of the AE and Dr. Ng an Ho as the Assistant ecretary. It may be a recognition of our achievement in organizing the event. During the preparation of the conference, we really saw the concerted effort of a dedicated team, coming together and trying their best to make the event a success. hen some of the senior leaders in the A&E field are making their succession plan, it is heartening to see so many younger doctors and nurses are taking up the positions assigned to them so well. ith the success of this conference, we are confident that we can organize similar major conference in Hong Kong in the future. If the College decides to go ahead, we would stand a very good chance for winning the bid to host the future International Conference on Emergency edicine. urthermore, the College is also considering the possibility of organizing the annual scientific conference with the AG. In conclusion, the organization of the rd ACE helped our ociety and College to unite a team of senior leaders and new blood. e success of the conference was pivotal in building up the status of emergency medicine of Hong Kong in Asia and put us with the other leading countries in the world.

4 0 H OC 00 Dr. Kam Chak ah Chairman of cientific ubcommittee of ACE 00 e Conference has been a tremendous success not just because of the enlightening scientific contents but also the extraordinary I support (Dr H a as the eam Leader) as well as the outstanding establishment of the professional network and friendship. e external keynote and plenary speakers comprised of Prof. KY Yuen (Emergencing Infection, Hong Kong), Dr David kinner (rauma and Higher Examination, UK), Dr Robert Hoffman (oxicology, UA) and Dr Abu Abdulla (Domestic Violence, alaysia) A wide range of topics from daily practice, research, philosophical and social issues including management of spousal abuse were presented and deliberated from the calm attitude to the burning edges. e participants would evidently concurred that we have shared and learned more than the standard symposium. o facilitate research interest, prizes of honour have been awarded in various sessions. ree Paper, Poster, Photo and Video. On behalf of the cientific Committee, I should like to thank all the back-stage heroes, speakers and participants who have enabled this Conference as one of the most valuable lifetime experience. e ACE 00 had definitely paved a new route to achieve excellence in the research and expertise and dissemination of E to the whole world and not just limited to Asia.
