1 HONG KONG UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY VOL.12 NO.3 4 APRIL 2001 Artistic arrays In keeping with the Center for the Arts mission to build artistic awareness and appreciation for beauty, the HKUST Arts Festival 2001 was held from 26 February to 23 March. It was not just art for art's sake, however. According to Miss Kandus Lau, Manager of the Center, cultural exchanges among institutions and art groups were the Festival's main focus. This year's Festival showcased music, drama, dance, painting and other art forms. We aimed to integrate the cultures of East and West, and juxtapose traditional and contemporary styles, says Miss Lau. It was particularly gratifying that many arts groups were able to participate, including the Shenzhen Arts College, the Guangzhou Zhongshan University, the City University of Hong Kong's Philharmonic Orchestra, the International Youth and University Students Communication (Hong Kong), the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts School of Dance, the City Contemporary Dance Company and the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, she says. Student and staff involvement was actively encouraged, with the Students Union Band Society, the Wind Ensemble, the University Choir, the Chinese Orchestra and the String Team performing in this artistically colorful event. The children in the University community also had the opportunity to give veins to their musical talents in a concert. The HKUST Arts Festival 2001 was truly a festival for all. East-West cultural interaction is achieved in the performance by Commusico, an Asian youth arts group that attempts to fuse communication and music. An active and influential student art organization, the Guangzhou Zhongshan University Arts Group brings Chinese music and dance to HKUST for cultural exchange. 2 Safer discourse Getting to know you more President- Designate Prof Paul Ching- Wu Chu flew in to visit HKUST from 21 to 24 February after attending a conference in Taiwan. During his short stay, he participated in the joint Court and Council meeting, met the newly elected Students Union cabinet, and dined with officers of the Alumni Association and its affiliates. He said the main objective of this visit was to learn more about the University. Prof Chu will be here again in late April to take part in the 10th Anniversary Launching Ceremony. HKUST physicists have invented a new material that absorbs microwaves and offers a practical way to shield the human body from radiation emitted by mobile phones and other wireless communication devices. The new material is an ultra-thin, lightweight and flexible composite that could easily be installed inside mobile phone handsets or used as an external shield between the antenna and the user s head. The combined effect of its reflection and absorption properties blocks up to 90% of the electromagnetic fields emitted by mobile handsets (approximately 70% through absorption and 20% through reflection) without affecting the quality of signal transmission. Moreover, its inventors departmental head Prof Ping Sheng, Assistant Professor Weijia Wen, and Associate Professors Weikun Ge and Che Ting Chan say it is both easy and inexpensive to fabricate, with the raw materials costing under HK$20 per square foot. Small wonder then perhaps that the discovery is arousing considerable interest among mobile phone accessory manufacturers and the media especially given that Hong Kong has one of the highest penetrations of mobile phone users in the world. What may be more surprising to some of us is that such a practical breakthrough should come about as an unexpected by-product of basic research. The inspiration for our new composite grew out of the team s long-term investigation of the interactions between electromagnetic waves and different materials, explains Prof Sheng. We decided to put a fundamental principle we d been mulling over to the test, and came up with a new composite material which, after investigating its properties, we realized would be ideal as a protective film on mobile phones. Public concern over the safety of mobile phone radiation exposure is mounting and world health experts advocate a precautionary approach until there is hard scientific evidence either way. However, if we can find a way to minimize human exposure to these microwaves in the first place, we re effectively side-stepping the problem, he says. Associate Professor Tai-Kai Ng (Physics) has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society, an honor limited to less than 0.5% of the society s membership, in recognition of his work on the Coulomb effects in a quantum dot, leading to the prediction of conductance enhancement due to the Kondo resonance. Associate Professor Che Ting Chan (Physics) has won the 2000 Achievement in Asia Award of the Overseas Chinese Physics Association for his contributions to the theory and simulation of material properties. Assistant Professor Jerry Patchell (Social Science) has won the Wrigley-Fairchild Prize for a Geographical Review article he co-authored with Professor Roger Hayter of Simon Fraser University, Canada. The prize is awarded to the best article to appear in the journal over a three-year period. Awards update The material s usefulness is not limited to mobile phones. Potential applications include shields to block radiation from other wireless devices and computers. Being thin, light and cheap, it could even be used like wallpaper to reduce interference between wireless control devices in neighboring homes and offices. Coming hot on the heels of Prof Sheng and another research team s super thin soundproofing material, the department s latest material breakthrough is further proof of the value of pure research in yielding innovative solutions to everyday issues as well as its longer term contribution to the knowledge economy. National Natural Science Foundation of China in recognition of his contributions in soft condensed matter physics. Professor H S Kwok (Electrical and Electronic ) and PhD graduate Dr S T Tang won the Best Poster Paper award at the Seventh International Display Works conference in Kobe, Japan. Chemical engineers Dr Lin Li (PhD graduate), Professor Chi-Ming Chan, Assistant Professor King Lun Yeung, Research Associate Jianxiong Li and Visiting Scholar Dr Kai-Mo Ng s paper on polymer crystallization in Macromolecules 2001(34): was highlighted in the Editor s Choice section of the 9 February issue of Science. On the home front, electrical and engineering undergraduate Suk Han Lam has won the first prize and Kam Fai Chan, Yu Tong Wong and Pui Yan Wong third prize for their submissions to the IEEE Student Paper Contest 2000 organized by the IEEE Hong Kong Section. 3 A fitting finale It seemed somewhat appropriate that the final goal of the final Staff-Student basketball match of the First HKUST Intramural Sports 2000/2001 was scored by Prof Chia-Wei Woo in his last game as President of HKUST. Held on 7 March in the S H Ho Sports Hall, this was one of three basketball matches that evening. It was a very close game, with the student team narrowly defeating the Staff Social Club team (39:36). Confessing to being a bit out of shape, our 63-year-old President found the vigorous game quite a challenge. While Prof Woo felt that the staff team might have stood a better chance had he not played, winning was not just what this game was all about. Teammate Dr Jason Yang (Physics) came out of retirement because he felt that the game was a tribute to Prof Woo, who has done so much for this University. Another team member Dr Hongtao Zhang (Information and Systems ) states he was thrilled at seeing the President score their team s final goal. I have to say there was a luck factor in that but it was not an isolated incident. Now that the luck carrier is stepping down, let s make sure he is not taking away the factor with him, he says. The competition scored another goal for the participants. Student team captain Will Lee (economics yr 2) says it offered a rare chance for students to communicate with professors outside formal lectures. The First HKUST Intramural Sports 2000/2001 was a student-organized function involving over 1,000 students from various departments and the Students Union Sports Association. Four competition events were Prof Woo admires the perseverance and considerateness of the student team he played against in his last game as President. held: the Aquatic Meet, the Athletics Meet, the Soccer Tournament and the Basketball Tournament. According to Theresa Leung of the Student Affairs Office, the main aims of the function were to instill a sense of belonging among students in the same department, to provide learning opportunities and to promote cooperation between different student groups. About 300 spectators turned up to share the fun and excitement of the basketball finals. Later that evening, Prof Woo was the guest of honor at the Closing Ceremony and Prize Presentation in which the overall winning teams from the departments of Mathematics (Champion), Electrical and Electronic (First Runner-up) and Civil (Second Runner-up) were awarded the President s Trophy. New SBM teaching prize Eighteen faculty from the School of Business and (SBM) were honored as winners and nominated runners-up in the first presentation of the Franklin Prize for Teaching Excellence on 9 March. The idea of a funded prize for outstanding teaching was proposed by Adjunct Professor Larry Franklin (Finance), who describes teaching as his passionate hobby and whose own classroom manner is highly regarded by both his faculty peers and students. After 30 years of combining part-time teaching with a full-time corporate career (his current day job is General Manager Investments and Head Legal Counsel at Hutchison Whampoa (China) Ltd), Dr Franklin is a firm believer that great business schools are built on excellent teaching as well as excellent research. I was heartened to find that the administrators at HKUST Business School shared this belief. So I decided to put our money where my mouth was, says Dr Franklin, explaining how he and his wife Mei Kwong came to set up a permanent endowment fund in September 2001, the income from which will be used each Fall and Spring semester to recognize and reward SBM faculty members who are selected by their students and peers for their excellence in teaching. 4 Come and join the party! %& There's double cause for celebration on 23 April with the official launch of the University's 10th anniversary programs both on campus and off. Get set for a roaring start at lunch time in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Atrium with a spectacular parade, lion and dragon dances, and music and dance performances by HKUST students. Both President Prof Chia-Wei Woo and President-Designate Prof Paul Ching-Wu Chu will attend, and they warmly invite all faculty, staff and students to join them. Off campus, at 5:30pm, Chief Executive the Hon Tung Chee Hwa will be officiating the Launching Ceremony with Dr S Y Chung, Pro-Chancellor; Dr Vincent H S Lo, Council Chairman; Prof Chia-Wei Woo; Prof Paul Chu; Mr Yu Kwan Siu, Students Union President; and Mr Tin Yu Leung, Alumni Association President, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event brings together Court and Council members, donors, corporate partners, government officials and others in the wider community whose support has played and will continue to play a vital part in our success story. These honorable guests will witness the world-class achievements of HKUST in its first 10 years in an Achievement Video. They will also be presented with a commemorative book entitled HKUST Soars the First Decade detailing the development and successes of the University as a souvenir. Joining our guests are Senate members, senior administrators, and representatives from the faculty and the student body. Proceedings of the off-campus part of the Launching Ceremony will be broadcast live via the Internet on campus computers from 5:30pm so that everyone can share the joy of the occasion. A design team from the Hong Kong Jockey Club was commissioned to produce the visual interpretation of these early founders ideas. Among those preliminary ideas were two sketches submitted by the then President-Designate, Prof Chia-Wei Woo. In the artwork he made with materials confiscated from his daughter, a long vertical line was used to represent the University emerging from amidst the city to support business and technology and to shore up the city's prosperity. Nevertheless, his idea was drowned by a large number of proposals then followed. On 5 February 1988, the Jockey Club designers presented five proposals to the Planning Committee. Prof Woo shared his views on the designs in a letter to the Committee: Since the major mission of the University is to educate, my preference is toward those designs which emphasize the students and scholars. This idea was accepted in the University Council's very first meeting on 12 April The logo as we see it now was finally approved on 30 June 1988 after many rounds of discussion and refinement. Answer for the last issue: The correct number of important inventions depicted on the mural of the "Red Bird" sculpture is 39. This was reported in the October 1991 issue of Genesis. To earn a place on the List, students need a semester grade average of or higher from 12 credits completed in the semester, and no failures in any enrolled course. Students who satisfy these requirements receive a letter from the dean of their school notifying them of their success, and the achievement is recorded on their student transcript.
