3 49ers in the Community: 49ers Inspire a Special Guest By: 49ers Staff Strong is a common adjective used to describe the 49ers and it is only fitting to also describe Leilani Guitierrez with that same complimentary term. A straight A student and Junior National Honor Society member, Leilani lives her life to the fullest, overcoming any obstacles that try to block her way. At the age of four, Leilani was a passenger in an automobile accident that left her quadriplegic, yet she has refused to let her wheelchair inhibit her life. Determined to visit San Francisco, Leilani and her family began their trip to the Bay Area with a visit to 49ers headquarters. After a tour of the facilities and getting outfitted with a new 49ers beanie, Leilani headed to the field. She and her family watched practice from the sidelines where she and rookie tackle Luke Marquardt shared a heart-warming moment of prayer. At the conclusion of practice, players and coaches gathered around Leilani. Though she came to the facility as a fan, it was obvious she would leave with a fan base of her own. It means a lot for her to come out and meet some of the guys, said tight end Vernon Davis. But I see it as that the privilege was ours. For the running backs group, this visit was extra special, as Running Back Coach Tom Rathman played a key role in facilitating Leilani s visit with the 49ers. It meant a lot for Leilani to visit, said Rathman. We have some friends in common and it was really meaningful to me to see her on the sidelines. San Francisco 49ers \\ 3 // 2013 Touchdown Edition

4 49ers in the Community: 49ers Inspire a Special Guest By: 49ers Staff One of those friends is Richard Hearn. Leilani serves as a board member for Richard s STARCARE Foundation which supports various charitable organizations. For the past 7 years he has witnessed Leilani s desire to give back and impact every life she encounters. I have seen her change lives just by coming into a room, said Hearn, The outpouring of love throughout her visit to the 49ers touched me powerfully and deeply. There was so much good in each moment and so much promise. Leilani wasn't a Girl in a chair. She was an empowered young woman, living a dream and giving her best to the 49ers as well. Leilani and her family spent Saturday exploring San Francisco s Fisherman s Wharf before attending Sunday s preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. Leilani inspired from the sidelines pregame. Players greeted Leilani enthusiastically, fueled by her strength and support to seal a 49ers victory. This has been heartwarming because she doesn t really get to do a lot, explained June Hendriks, Leilani s mother. Although she goes to high school and goes to all the football games there, it s an entirely different kind of excitement being here at the 49ers. My two young boys play football and it s good for her to get excited and be included in the family sport. Leilani finished the day with a new outlook on football saying, Seeing all of this in person, you can get into it and now I want to watch every game. I am so inspired and have a new appreciation for my high school team. It s the greatest feeling being out here and watching all of this happen. This is just an awesome experience. 5 49ers Community: Rookies Set Goals On and Off the Field A high school football player takes their first step onto the field with a recipe of mixed emotions such as excitement, reservations of the unknown, the drive to excel, and the thrill of being part of a team. Fast forward to the NFL, and that freshman is rookie cornerback Darryl Morris making his debut with the 49ers and that very same state of mind. Morris and his fellow 49ers rookies, just like the freshman, have one method of excelling to the next level setting goals. 49ers rookies and the Santa Clara freshman football team worked collaboratively to establish their goals for on and off the field as they kicked off the 49ers 1 st and Goal event on Monday at Santa Clara High School. I think long-term goal setting is especially important, as it encourages you to set short term goals and move from one stage to the next, said former defensive lineman Lawrence Okoye, It is just as applicable to me as it is to them, since we are going through the same thing at a different level. Twenty eager freshmen and the youngest faces of the 49ers spent an afternoon discussing their hopes, expectations, and strategies for exceeding expectations and growing as athletes and overall individuals. Activities included short term and long term goal-setting, as well as team-building exercises and creating secret handshakes which made for a productive afternoon that is sure to leave a lasting impact on Santa Clara s youth. My personal goal coming into this program is to establish a 100% graduation rate, stated first-year Santa Clara High School coach Hank Roberts, These exercises and working with individuals who have taken their play to the next level will help our team focus on what is important and not let distractions interfere with who they grow to become in the future. 6 49ers Community: Rookies Set Goals On and Off the Field The freshman athletes along with their 49ers rookie mentors including Quinton Dial, Darryl Morris,Luke Marquardt, Kevin McDermott, Lawrence Okoye, Chuck Jacobs, and Jenna York and Mara York of 49ers ownership, created a template of short term and long term goals for high school and what they envisioned for potential college and career choices. After topping off their projects with creative handshakes and team names such as #Team Beast, and Ruthless Rookies, the six groups took turns presenting their written steps towards success to their teammates. I think it is really important to work hard in everything you do, said Morris, If you want to play football, work hard at it, but also in life and whatever you want to do. If it is important to you, you have to work hard at it and achieve your goals. Christian of the Santa Clara Bruins plans to apply Morris advice and the goals he has established as a freshman and utilize them throughout his academic and professional career. I want to be really good at football and excel in high school and college, expressed Christian, From there, I see myself practicing to become a veterinarian. The freshman all-stars and 49ers rookie players wrapped up the afternoon with autographs, smiles, and an experience all parties will remember for a lifetime. The contagious adrenaline and optimism which filled the room will follow the athletes to the classroom and into the community as their positive character in turn impacts their peers and the goals of others. 7 Game Day Q&A: Colin Kaepernick By: Taylor Price, 49ers.com He s a man a few words and many big plays on the football field. Colin Kaepernick isn t one for talking for the sake of talking. His words are meant to be precise. They are meant to deliver. There s no wasted motion. This is also how the San Francisco 49ers third-year quarterback operates on the field. He s direct. To the point. And he makes people watch every minute of it. In just 10 starts, Kaepernick captivated the football world while leading the 49ers to the franchise s sixth Super Bowl appearance. The dual-threat quarterback is itching to get back on the field in the ultimate competitive arena stadiums on Sundays in the National Football League. After taking one week off following the February defeat, Kaepernick attacked the offseason the same way he approaches each week s opponent with no mercy. The 49ers quarterback got faster, put on more muscle and mastered every nuance of the playbook. Kaepernick leads by example and his teammates follow. No longer the backup, Kaepernick is the one to rally the offense. He encourages members of the defense and he s the team s spark-plug in the locker room, weight room and on the field. It s Kaepernick s team. But he s not taking it for granted. He s taking action. Not talking about it, but being about it. Hours before the final exhibition game of 2013, Gameday caught up with the face of the franchise in the back of Bus 2, making its way to the airport for a final tune-up in San Diego. Wearing a backwards red snap-back cap, Kaepernick took off his black over-sized headphones, sat up in his seat and discussed his rise to stardom, celebrity encounters, charity work and aspirations on and off the field. 8 Game Day Q&A: Colin Kaepernick By: Taylor Price, 49ers.com This offseason you met so many well-known personalities from Michelle Obama to musicians like Snoop Dogg and Luke Bryan and former athletes like Bo Jackson. Out of all the unique people you were able to interact with, who was most memorable and why? I would probably say Bo Jackson. We had a chance to talk about a lot of different things. He was always one of my favorite athletes. You open up your first full year as a starter against Green Bay, a team you grew up rooting for and a team you beat as the youngest 49ers quarterback to start a playoff game. How do you view the opportunity to face them again on Opening Day? I treat it the same as last season when we played them. You treat them like another opponent. In the playoff game you broke the NFL s single-game rushing record by a quarterback, beating a mark previously held by Michael Vick, how does that accomplishment rank in your football career? I don t worry about records like that. The only thing I can worry about is trying to win games. The way you prepare for games is certainly noticed by teammates and coaches what s one thing you have to accomplish every day, something that s become a standard of your preparation? It s not one thing, it s everything. From meetings to workouts to practice, you constantly have to be on top of everything in order to improve. You ve been active in raising money for Camp Taylor throughout your time with the 49ers last year s golf tournament raised more than 200k for the charity. Why is the cause so important to you? Any chance I have to talk about it or build it up, I m going to. It s a great cause. A lot of people don t know too much about helping children with heart defects, but I think more people are starting to become aware of it the more they realize how good of a cause it is. Do they have feedback or tips on all the commercials, magazine covers, attention you re getting off the field? They do everything for me. They make sure I m still the same person I ve been since I was little. If you could choose any athlete to meet, who would it be? LeBron James. So this is probably a good time to put the word out and get LeBron to come to a 49ers game? Yeah, that would be great. You plan on rocking the beard all year, or is that a training camp/ preseason thing? I have no idea. Would you say James Harden is inspiring that look? (Laughs) A little bit. 10 Through Their Lens: Kym Fortino By: Megan Wirth Whether it is a Monday, Thursday, or Sunday, our focus is always on the 49ers making the plays and the wins on the field! For the next two months, we are going to take a look at the people who are capturing the big moments on the playing field: our 49ers team photographers! This month, we focus our lens on Kym Fortino, a woman who is not only known for her amazing photos, but for her incredible vigor and attitude towards life. The month of October is National Breast Cancer awareness month, and it is no coincidence that we honor Fortino as she fights her own fight and lives life to the fullest every day. Let s take a look through the lens of a photographer who captures our favorite moments of the San Francisco 49ers. When did you become a photographer for the 49ers? I officially joined Terrell Lloyd s crew in 2008;; this is my fifth season covering the team. As fun as it looks, capturing the games must be hard! What does your game day schedule look like? Game days usually start at 9:30AM, so we are at the stadium before the team even arrives. Preparation usually consists of getting camera gear ready, getting a feel for the day, assisting Terrell with any needs, and being ready with equipment as soon as the players start to warm ups. From that moment on.. you re on. Long after the game is over, photographers are still sitting in front of the computer editing images for a few hours. These images are then used in articles on 49ers.com, and various other places. What has been the best play you have photographed? It was in 2011, when the Dallas Cowboys journeyed to Candlestick Park. I stood in the corner of the endzone, my camera on then QB, Alex Smith who released the ball that looked like it was coming straight for me. WR Kyle Williams comes flying into my frame to make the over the shoulder catch right in front of me. Why did you become a photographer? My passion for photography began in high school. It wasn t until years later when my own kids were playing football I decided to combine my love for sports and photography and pursue my dream of becoming a sports photographer. 11 Through Their Lens: Kym Fortino By: Megan Wirth If you could photograph one event in your career, what would it be? If I could photograph one thing, I would have to say the Olympics. That might be the only event that would trump this past season s amazing opportunity to shoot the Super Bowl. What is the hardest part about your job? The hardest part about the job is not putting too much pressure on yourself to capture every peak action moment, because you want to do so. It s sort-of like being a player; you have to have short term memory and move quickly to the next play. The most fun part about your job? I get to shoot a game that I absolutely love. As a photographer, you experience the same highs and lows as the team. Your images are only going to be as good as long as the team plays well. So naturally, you re emotionally invested which makes it that much more euphoric when you get to experience something as thrilling as playoff games or, ideally, the Super Bowl. What sets you apart from the rest of photographers? I am a female, and I am vertically challenged. And I embrace both of my differences whole heartedly. My point of view is always different, and I can squeeze into spaces others can t. Work ethic goes a long way in this business as well. 12 49ers Nutrition Tip: Are You Eating Breakfast? Last month we had an opportunity to try a nutritious-packed snack for before a big game or practice. This month, we are going to take a look at the most important meal of the day: BREAKFAST. Breakfast, especially for children, is the meal where we can ensure we are getting our bodies ready and able for our busy days we should never, ever miss it (especially as athletes)! 49ers head chef, Chef Chad knows how important it is for the 49ers and Kids Club Members to be properly fueled for their day so he has shared a recipe for breakfast that the team eats too! Follow along with the upcoming newsletters to see the latest recipes and what s on the teams plate! Whole Wheat Blueberry Pancakes Ingredients 2 cups whole wheat flour 1/4 cups natural sugar 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest 2 cups low-fat buttermilk 2 large eggs 1/2 cups low-fat margarine, melted 2 packages (6 ounces each) fresh blueberries, plus more for garnish if desired Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl until well combined. Set aside. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, lemon zest and eggs. Using a wooden spoon, stir egg mixture into flour mixture just until combined. Add melted margarine and blueberries and stir gently. Preheat oven to 200 F. Heat a nonstick griddle or skillet over medium heat. Let a few drops of cold water fall on the surface. If water bounces, sputters and instantly evaporates, griddle is ready. Pour 1/4 cup batter onto the skillet. Cook 2 minutes, or until bubbles that appear on the surface begin to break and the bottom is golden. Flip pancake and cook 1 minute longer or until lightly golden. Place pancakes on a heatproof platter and keep warm in oven. Repeat with remaining batter. Garnish with additional blueberries if desired. Chef also recommends adding a small glass of 2% milk, an orange, and two slices of turkey bacon to this meal! San Francisco 49ers \\ 12 // 2013 Touchdown Edition
