You may call the headquarters at (270) The headquarters will be open Tuesday (8 a.m.-6 p.m. CT), Wednesday and Thursday morning from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. All issuing of credentials on Wednesday and Thursday will take place at Entrance 3 (Media Will Call) at Diddle Arena. Credentials will not be issued at Headquarters after Tuesday. TITLE SPONSOR This is a reminder that Houchens Industries remains the official title sponsor of the Girls Tournament. Houchens is in the ninth year of its sponsorship and will remain the title sponsor through the 2011 event. Finally, please remember the official tournament reference is Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls Sweet 16 Tournament or Houchens/KHSAA Girls Sweet 16 State Tournament and should be used by outlets credentialed by the KHSAA for the event. Simply referencing the event as the Sweet 16 is incorrect. MEDIA CREDENTIALS Credentials to the 2011 Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls State Basketball Tournament are non-transferable. Credentials are issued in the person s name in which it was granted (photo identification required) and is valid for one day only. Media members will individually sign in at Media Will Call each day. Please notify tournament headquarters or a member of the tournament staff if there is a name change in a credential request. PRESS ROW - PHOTO PASSES Press Row and the scorer s tables, as well as areas marked for photographers and videographers are reserved for working media only. Do not sit in seats which are designated for other outlets. Seating charts are posted throughout floor level for your reference. ABSOLUTELY no cheering, coaching or clapping (or contesting officials calls) will be permitted in working media areas. Those members violating this policy will lose all press row privilege and possible access to future KHSAA events. 50th HOUCHENS INDUSTRIES/KHSAA GIRLS SWEET 16 SET TO BEGIN IN BG For the 50th time in state history, regional winners from across the state of Kentucky will come together in Bowling Green, Kentucky with the ultimate prize on the line, the 2011 Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls Sweet 16 State Basketball. QUICK FACTS The 2011 participants are a combined in 497 games this season entering the tournament, a winning percentage of.821. Session four features four teams with a combined record, the most wins by any four teams in the opening session. Session one and three each fatures four teams with 100 wins while session two has four teams with a combined 94 wins. Only one first round game features teams that have both compiled 27 wins or more. Butler (27-4) will meet Perry County Central (27-3). Rockcastle County s 32-1 record is the best of any team in 2011 field. Five teams are in the tournament in consecutive seasons. TOURNAMENT NOTES Many Looking To Build Sweet 16 Tradition With First Tournament Win Eight teams will have the chance to post their first win in program history in the state tournament in Six of the eight first round games feature teams that are looking for their first state tournament win. Only five teams in the tournament field have more than one tournament win in their history. E.A. Diddle Arena Plays Host to State Tournament for 11th Consecutive Year For the 11th consecutive season, E.A. Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green plays host to the girls state tournament. It marks the 18th time the venue has been held at the venue since its opening. 26 Teams Win District Titles in Both Boys and Girls in A total of 26 teams won district titles in both boys and girls basketball during the season. 2 Media credentials are non-transferable. Media members allowing children, students, acquaintances or non-working media members to utilize these passes will lose all media privileges to cover KHSAA events in the future. PHOTO GUIDELINES All still photographers/videographers must utilize the marked areas in the end zones and the sideline adjacent to press row from the bottom of the foul circle to the baseline. Photographers/videographers must stay seated on the floor. Please stay off the playing floor during timeouts. Team bench areas are off limits at all times. No photographers may take photographs from the press row seating. No tripods are to be used in the arena during the games. Any use must be approved by Elden May, KHSAA Sports Information Director. Anyone wishing to attach a camera to the goal post MUST have prior approval from the KHSAA and Diddle Arena. No flash cameras may be used on floor level. Television live shots are to be conducted prior to or at the conclusion of each session. ABSOLUTELY NO MERCURY LIGHTS ARE TO BE POINTED IN THE DIRECTION OF THE PLAYING FLOOR FROM ANYWHERE WITHIN THE ARENA WHILE PLAY IS IN PROGRESS. INTERVIEWS Locker rooms and the back hallway are closed to the media during the tournament. Following a brief cooling off period after each game -- five minutes -- the winning coach and selected players will be escorted to the interview area. The losing coach and players will follow. TV stations wishing to do one-on-one interviews will be afforded the opportunity AFTER the coaches/players visit the media interview room. These should take place outside the player/coach entrance to the interview area. ABSOLUTELY no interviews, especially radio, are to be conducted on the floor immediately following the conclusion of the game. All coaches/athletes MUST report to the interview area prior to doing any post game radio/tv interviews. WEEKLY PAPERS Due to space limitations, weekly papers are asked to rotate seating during games involving teams from their coverage area. A reserved press row seat for the entire tournament is not available to weekly media outlets. Four seats on press row will be marked Weekly Papers. You may sit in these seats during your game, but to accommodate others, we ask that you return to the auxiliary seating during games not involving teams from your coverage area. available in the 300 Level Sections. There are no reserved seats for non-originating radio stations on press row. PARKING A limited number of parking passes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for media outlets covering the entire event. Once the surface lot is full, the KHSAA-issued parking pass will admit you to the parking structure next to Diddle Arena. RESULTS Results including box score and play-by-play from each game will be available in the media work room. Results will also be available via the KHSAA Web site ( RECORDS Many of the records previously found in the tournament program are now available via the KHSAA Web site ( MEDIA WORKROOM/HOSPITALITY The media workroom is located on floor level behind the main scorer s table. Courtesy phone lines are available to transmit. A light pre-session snack will be served one hour prior to tip-off of the first game of each session. Your credential will admit you to the general hospitality (soda, chips, etc.) located in Auxiliary Gym B on Floor Level of Diddle Arena. This room will be open throughout the tournament. HOME TEAM The team listed at the top of the bracket will be the home team. HALFTIME Halftime will be 15 minutes for all games. There will be a minimum of 25 minutes between games. Session 7 - Saturday Morning the KHSCA Bridgid DeVries Leadership Award will be presented at the end of the first quarter of the first game. Session 8 - Saturday Evening The 25th anniversary of Oldham County s state title run will be recognized. PNC/KHSAA BOYS TOURNAMENT NEXT WEEK The 94th PNC/KHSAA Boys State Basketball Tournament gets underway next week, March 16-19, at Rupp Arena in Lexington. Tickets may be purchased online at ticketmaster.com or at the Rupp Arena Box Office. NON-ORIGINATING RADIO Radio stations that are not originating a broadcast of the tournament are to utilize auxiliary press seating located in Section L. Butler coach Larry Just has one state tournament coaching appearance in Assistant coach Gary Wheeler was an assistant on the 2008 state championship team and has been to the state tournament as an assistant in three of the last four years. Gary Kidwell A longtime supporter of high school athletics in northeastern Kentucky, Kidwell served as basketball coach at Lewis County High School for 20 years, baseball coach for 12 and football coach for 10, as well as athletic director for nearly two decades. Kidwell also is a longtime baseball and softball umpire and served on the KHSAA Board of Control, in addition to Commissioner of the Eastern Kentucky Conference since Kidwell has served as sports editor of the Lewis County Herald since 1975 and continues to host a weekly sports show on WKKS radio in Vanceburg after 35 years. Richard Dick Morse His outstanding four-sport officiating career began in 1960 with baseball and basketball and continued to football, where Morse called 30 playoff games. In 1995, Morse was named the Kentucky Official of the Year and in 2002 was awarded Supervisor of the Year. Felton Spencer A standout at Eastern High School in the mid-1980s, Spencer helped the Eagles to a pair of 7th Region championships and a spot on the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Team in He followed with a standout career at the University of Louisville, followed by a lengthy NBA career. Joey Stockton A nine-time state track champion and Kentucky Mr. Football finalist, Stockton excelled at North Hardin High School. He was named Mr. Track in back-to-back years as well as Kentucky Male Athlete of the Year his senior year in J.R. VanHoose A schoolboy legend at Paintsville High School, VanHoose led the Tigers to the 1996 state championship and a runner-up finish in VanHoose finished his career with 3,095 points and 2,069 rebounds, one of only a handful of players to accomplish the feat. Among the individual honors bestowed upon VanHoose are Parade All-American, USA and Gatorade Player of the Year and 1998 Kentucky Mr. Basketball. VanHoose also enjoyed a standout career at Marshall University.
