Milestone for local aircraft association By Pati lalonde Jan. 5 marks a milestone for Midland s Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter On that day in 1995 a group of 12 men and women met at 7 p.m. in Bob Anderson s hangar at Jack Barstow Airport to hold their first meeting. Now 80 members strong, the group will celebrate its anniversary Jan. 8 in their own building at the airport. We are going to have cake and ice cream, said president Mike Woodley, laughing. The Midland chapter is part of an organization that was founded in 1953 in Milwaukee, Wis., by a group of individuals who were interested in building their own planes. With chapters all over the world and a membership numbering more than 180,000, the group has expanded to include all those who have a passion for aviation. The Midland chapter got off the ground when Walt Suminski and Dale Johnson, members of the Saginaw, Midland, Bay City EEA Chapter 159, thought the Jack Barstow Airport in Midland would be the perfect site for a chapter. Midland is ideally located for learning and teaching aviation, said Suminski. North of Midland is nothing but farm land. Pilots learning to fly can fly north and not interfere with towers and cities. It s really a natural. The two rolled up their sleeves and got down to business. But it wasn t easy, remembers Suminski. In order to start a chapter, we had to have a certain amount of charter members, 10-12, he said. We got the names together and submitted it to the EAA convention office in Oshkosh, Wis. If they think it looks doable, they assign you a chapter, give you the by laws and instructions on how to set it up. We decided to do it. They were assigned Charter 1093 with Johnson elected president, Dr. John W. Shriner, vice president, Jim Powell, treasurer and Suminski as secretary. That was the easy part. They group had to come up with a place to meet, raise some money and become a 501 (c)(3)organization. Member Bob Anderson not only offered his hanger for meetings, but through his business, Reliable Printing, did the newsletter for free. The group wanted their own place, a place where they could teach people of all ages the love of flying. But with $20 in their pockets, and dues of $12 per year, that dream wasn t going to be a reality without a lot of work. We had a Christmas party, Suminski said. We had an auction at the party and we had a tremendous turnout. Some members bid enormous amounts of money for Mickey Mouse things. We had ice cream socials, open houses, all the things we could think of to try and raise money. We progressed and built up our treasury. With a price tag of $30,000 for the shell of a building, that amount of money wasn t going to be raised with auctions and ice cream. The group went to the Barstow Foundation, who offered to match a dollar with every dollar the group made, then raised that to $2 for one, giving the group $20,000 if they could come up with $10,000. We didn t have the 10, Suminski said. We went back to our members. They contributed from $200 to $500 each and we came up with the $10,000. Donations helped as well. A pilot passed away and gave the group a customized van, which they sold. Jack Yoder also left the group a number of hangers in his will, and The Dow Chemical Co. donated all the insulation for the building. We never could have done it without all our volunteers pitching in, Suminski said. Two years into their charter, they broke ground on what would become the Ormond Barstow Aviation Education Center. Ormond Barstow was the brother of Jack Barstow. Educate they do, offering the Young Eagles free flights for kids ages 8 through 17 on the Second Saturday of each month, and a week-long aviation camp in the summer for students in ninth through twelfth grades. We don t teach kids to fly, said Dot Hornsby, who leads the programs. We give them a well rounded experience in aviation. The top three students from the class are flown to the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, held each year. The group also hosts two pancake breakfasts and fly-ins each year. Dates for 2015 are May 2 and Sept. 12, as well as a Santa Fly In, with crafts. On the drawing board for this year, is the Midland Community Aviation Discovery Area on a piece of vacant land at the airport. Partnering with the Midland Area Community Foundation as part of the STEM program, the area will have picnic tables, benches and educational displays, as well as front row seats to watch the planes come in. As for the future, Suminski still has a few dreams he would like to see fulfilled.

I would like to build onto the chapter building, he said. A classroom where young pilots just learning to fly can come in and get weather briefings, talk to other pilots, sit down with instructors. I was also looking to add on a tool shop where you can fabricate and make the parts you need rather than buying them, he said. And, last but not least, when it s time for the Oshkosh convention, he would like Midland to be a welcoming airport for those who are flying in from all over the world. They could come in and fill up at a reduced rate, have some homemade doughnuts and coffee, he said. You would see all kinds of air planes fly into Midland. The Midland chapter is open to anyone who has a love of flying, whether they own a plane or not. Dues are $25 for the local chapter and $35 for the national membership per year. Meetings are held the first Thursday of each month. For more information, check out the Web site at or call Woodley at (586) Editor note: this article was published in the Midland Daily News on Monday, December 29, 2014 Our members To thank and honor: by Matthew Woods Six area Vietnam War veterans will share their experiences and field questions about one of the most difficult and misunderstood periods in our nation's history as part of a panel discussion Saturday. The event, hosted by The John Alden Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, is to honor area Vietnam War veterans and offer a bit of understanding and perspective from some of the people who lived the experience. Vietnam veterans Jim Murphy, Barry George, Oren Johnson, Brian McFadden, Paul Pangborn and Dave Pick are scheduled on the panel, which will begin at 1 p.m. in the Shipps-Barstow Wing of the Greater Midland Community Center. The panel discussion is just one of many such events that will take place through the Midland DAR over the next three years. Retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Jim Murphy of Midland will share some of his experiences. Murphy graduated from Midland High School in 1961, and spent a year at Central Michigan. In 1963, Murphy enlisted in Corps and shortly after signing up, received his draft notice. "Yeah, I was already in boot when I got my draft notice," he said, laughing. Murphy was sent to San Diego, where all Michigan Marines went for their basic training. "For some reason, everybody from Michigan went to San camp," he said. "They called us Hollywood Marines.'" Originally slated to work in communications, Murphy ended up becoming a naval aviator. "That's what they call pilots, he said. As for the aviation part of the job, Murphy said he enjoyed flying aircrafts" I enjoyed being able to fly. I ended up flying mostly helicopters, but also some fixed wing aircraft," he said. But as could be expected, things heated up and Murphy found himself piloting all different kinds of aircraft on combat missions. He flew H- 34 helicopters, later moving on to Huey gunships (military helicopters) and medical evacuation flights. Later on, he spent some time in a Cobra gunship, another type of helicopter.

Mich. woman found solace through flying By Jodi McFarland When asked what his time in the air was like over Vietnam, he said he and crew saw plenty of action. "There was a lot of red ink in my log book," Murphy said, explaining that combat missions were written in red ink in flight records. "We got shot at a lot." Murphy went on to say that although his time during the war was dangerous, he did enjoy the military. After two tours in Vietnam, he would spend the next several years with the Marines, retiring from active duty in During his time in Vietnam, Murphy earned the Navy Cross, the second highest award for the U.S. Marine Corps. "I had a great career as far as my experience in flying," he said. "But I can't think of anything good at all about Vietnam." Murphy said the weather as well as the terrain made everything difficult, and drug use among enlisted men became a large problem. But there was something worse going on than the climate and topography of the area. "Your friends were being killed right and left," he said. Murphy said his homecoming was low key, as well as his life on military bases right after the war. When we came home, we were encouraged to blend in, he said, adding that sideburns, longer hair and civilian clothes were suggested by superior officers. "And that was hard to do, because we were Marines 24 hours a day. If you lived on base, you pretty much stayed there because you were not welcome (outside the base)." Today, Murphy is happy to see service members treated like heroes when they return home. "Once you are in the service, you have a deepened respect for others in the military, whether (they are) retired or active duty," Murphy said. "Especially reservists. They work full time civilian jobs along with their military service." Editor note: The following is a excerpt of an article that was published in the Midland Daily News on January 4, 2015 Dot Hornsby, a former math teacher and counselor in Michigan, and her husband Jay had planned to spend their retirement learning to fly. When Jay passed away in 1992, Dot decided to go ahead with getting her pilot's license. "It opened up a wonderful new world where I could combine my love of kids and teaching skills with a love of flying. It gave me something to live for," she said. Dot has since volunteered with Wings of Mercy East Michigan and the Experimental Aircraft Association's Young Eagles program, and founded the Midland Aviation Camp for high school students. There are snowbirds, and then there is Dot Hornsby. At 80, Dot is a Michigander who lives in Florida during the coldest months of the winter. Like many retirees, she flies south every year. Unlike most, she's her own pilot. Dot's late-life take-off into aviation lifted her out of grief. Through years of directing youth aviation camps, her passion has elevated the sights of truly hundreds of people around her. Dot didn't grow up thinking about flight, though her father flew before he became a family man. Dot was born in Her father took his little Dorothy the airport to watch the planes take off and land. "I remember being in a car. You roll down the windows, and I'd stick my hand out," she recalled. "You know how your hand flops? That's what lifts the wing: high pressure underneath pushing up, low pressure on top gives you lift. "My dad would say, 'That's what makes airplanes fly.'" That's Bernoulli's Principle.

Dot met her future husband in the third grade in Anderson Township, outside of Cincinatti, Ohio. They moved to Midland when he got a Dow Chemical Co. job, and together they raised three sons with similarly short-and-sweet names: Mark, Scott, Craig. Jay started in sales and then moved to human resources. Dot spent 26 years teaching math and later counseling at what was then Midland's Jefferson Intermediate School. "In our day, I could be a teacher or a nurse," Dot says of her career options. Dot and Jay planned to fly into retirement by learning to fly. "She and he both had planned after retirement to learn to fly together, and she debated, 'Can I do this alone?'" said Dot's instructor and friend, Linda Langrill, 67. "It's one thing to have the support of a family member going through the rigors of the training, but while you're grieving, that's tough. It gave her a whole new set of friends and a whole new set of challenges she could work on." But then Jay was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was 58 when he died in "Instead of going to grieving, counseling, I went to the airplane," Dot recalled. "It opened up a wonderful new world where I could combine my love of kids and teaching skills with a love of flying. It gave me something to live for." Underneath was the high pressure of grief, the absence of a lifelong partner, her childhood sweetheart, a "wonderful man." Above, the sky was the limit. Combined, those forces gave Dot the lift to take off into her next act. Call it Bernoulli's Principle of the heart. Dot got her pilot's license in 1994, when she was "maybe a month shy of 60," she said. To get licensed, she needed to complete three takeoffs and landings at MBS International Airport. "That's scary if you haven't talked to an air traffic controller. I took off from Barstow (Municipal Airport), and it took me a half hour of circling north before I had the nerve to call the air traffic controller," she recalled. "I did

one landing and came back to Barstow because I was exhausted." Dot also is an instrument-rated pilot - that means she can fly "above the clouds," says Linda. Together, the women likely were the first all-female team piloting missions for Wings of Mercy East Michigan, its officials confirm. The charity provides free flights for medical care to patients and their families. Dot is "a great person. I flew with her a couple times," said Charles Binder of Bay City, who is secretary of Wings of Mercy East Michigan. "Firstrate pilot very dedicated to education. It was a privilege to fly with her." Today, she's on her third plane, this one a blueand-gray pinstriped white Cessna 182 she bought around the turn of the 21st century. Buying her first plane was a challenge because, as the widow describes it, she "was of a generation where the husband bought the car." Dot founded Midland Aviation Camp in Two decades later, it continues to raise high-school students' eyes to the skies, though Dot handed the reins to a former student about five years ago. She's active the Experimental Aircraft Association Midland Chapter 1093 and received honors from the Aviation Advisory Commission. She has flown 568 Young Eagles, a program that gives free rides to youths 8 to 17 on the second Saturday of every month at KIKW. When Dot retired from running the camp, Linda surprised her with a gathering of former students and speakers, including a pilot who wrote her a poem and a proclamation from the city declaring it Dot Hornsby Day. "We knew that she was thinking about stepping back from the aviation camp that she had founded," Linda said. "Before she got away, we wanted to make sure she understood the extent of the contribution she had made." Dot's educational efforts have reached hundreds of people, from students to special speakers, her friend said. She was among the women honored as "Hidden Heroines" in 2011 at the Doan Midland County History Center. Dot doesn't boast, but Linda tells how Dot donates flights for charity auctions, taking guests up on fall color tours. Her passion these days, Dot says, is seeing through a discovery area planned on a half-acre at Barstow Municipal Airport, with picnic tables and benches, "discovery boards" featuring aviation history and how an airplane flies, and more. Grant money is in hand, and the project is cleared for takeoff. Dot will fly home in time to take part in the groundbreaking. Safety conscious, Dot brings her instructor and friend to co-pilot her Cessna 182 for the trip from Barstow to an airfield north of Naples these days. Her solo flights to Florida are in the past. Langrill flies home commercially, and Dot stays in the condo she and her husband, Jay, bought in 1990 for his parents. She takes to the skies weekly to stay sharp, with almonds and M&Ms as her in-flight snacks of choice. Other destinations have included co-piloted flights to Alaska, Prince Edward Island, the Bahamas and New Mexico. Dot isn't Linda's oldest student. That honor is reserved for Ormond Barstow, brother of Jack Barstow, for whom Midland's airfield is named. Ormond Barstow started lessons at 84. "I don't think she'll ever know the entire impact she's had on so many people, both young and old," Linda said of Dot. "It's just a passion for her. It's also when other people of middle age see someone in their 70s flying, that's an inspiration. That's a parallel to how

Ormond Barstow inspired people in the early '90s." Dot says she doesn't like to talk about herself, but ask her about aviation and she has plenty to say. Linda has no trouble finding words to credit Dot for the way she's shared her enthusiasm about aviation. "When you're given a chance to act on your passion, do it," Linda says. "Dot did it." NEW MEMBERS We 'officially' welcome Justin Bentsen as a member; he has been involved with our Chapter for many years so we are pleased to put him on the membership list. Justin was an Aviation Camper and since then has been one of the leaders at the Camp He has also volunteered many hours with our Young Eagles Program, the Pancake Breakfasts and countless other activities at the Barstow Airport. Bryan displaying his name tag with many other aviation pins! Chapter Dues are Due!!! It s time to think about rejoining our active EAA Chapter 1093 for Attached is our current membership list so that you can check to see what your status is - if you paid in 2014 and I don't have it correctly entered please let me know at: dotsby@aol.com There were 63 who paid dues in 2014 and presently 22 have paid dues for Dues are $25 and can be put in the box in the office at the EAA Building or mailed to Box 2464, Midland, MI Also, please remember that belonging to national EAA is a requirement for local membership. Thanks for rejoining from the Membership Grinch! Top tech of 2014 innovation, invention, and just plain cool Fuels for the future: A major milestone toward the development of a lead-free alternative to avgas was marked in September, when the FAA announced the selection of four unleaded candidates to undergo testing slated to continue through the fall of That development was welcome news for owners of tens of thousands of aircraft that require highoctane formulations. There was also some welcome news on the diesel front, with various manufacturers closing in on new certifications. Stall protection: Pilots are taught that airspeed is no guarantee of lift a stall can happen at any airspeed, any attitude, and it can be a real problem for pilots caught unaware. For most of the history of powered flight, pilots had to infer their angle of attack based on a combination of speed and attitude, and how the airplane feels. The stall horn has been around for years, but it won t always warn soon enough of trouble. BendixKing and Safe Flight both rolled out devices in 2014 that change that game, offering a combination of visual and audio indicators. BendixKing s KLR 10 retails for $1,600 and won approval for installation in standard category aircraft. Safe Flight SCx is designed to both warn the pilot of dangerous conditions, and also find the optimal angle of attack to maximize efficiency in any phase of flight. Propeller vision: A research team in Germany captured the first digital images of a propeller blade in flight, a feat once believed impossible because of rotational forces that exceed 20 G.

Laser gun for aircraft: Granted, it is unlikely that the laser turret being developed by Lockheed Martin, the U.S. Air Force, and the University of Notre Dame will ever be an option on a general aviation aircraft, but you have to admit it s pretty cool that the developers used a Falcon 10 to test a laser turret. Laser defense for aircraft: Another kind of laserone developed for boardroom presentations and astronomy has bedeviled pilots in recent years, with potential for disaster if a beam blinds a flight crew at the wrong moment. A research team in Canada is closing in on a practical solution, a thin film applied to goggles or an entire windshield that blocks the beam but allows other kinds of light to pass through. In-flight recharging: Battery capacity remains the biggest obstacle standing in the way of electric power for general aviation aircraft. Chip Yates (who has set several world records for electric-powered flight) plans to fly across the Atlantic Ocean on battery power, using current battery technology. Solar power: Aviation was built on pioneers willing to risk it all for greatness, and the Solar Impulse team is cut from the same cloth. Solar Impulse 2 made its maiden flight in June, a two-hour sortie that was the first in a series of test flights that will test and prepare the revolutionary aircraft (powered entirely by the sun) for circumnavigation in Flying slower: While aviation has long celebrated speed, engineers are working on new strategies for flying slower. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) are preparing to test new strategies for slow flight in a wind tunnel. First, they had to fly an Airbus A320 into the stall regime (a decidedly atypical mission for a large transport aircraft). The goal here is to make future aircraft that operate more quietly, and from shorter runways.for more information and further details see: Video/All-News/2014/December/29/Top-Tech-of Pinconning Sport Pilots winter party It was a great party, 38 adults attended the Pinconning winter party, $66 was the 50 /50 Pay out, Big thanks to Tim Stewert for donating it back to the club for the spring party!! $300 in door prizes was won by 30 people, we wanted to tell everyone that did not make it we missed you and hope to see you next month at the monthly meeting or at the MULA annual winter party. We will have a couple speakers $300 in door prizes and we invite ANY aviator to come. So please pass the word. The Lapeer safety seminar AND wings program sponsored event will be march 28 in Lapeer at the airport this event is FREE and offers several topics to sit in on it starts at 10 am and lunch will be provided by the local FBO it will finish by 3 pm. This next safety tip is of great use to lower slower pilots, it gives us a heads up as to where the hevier stuff is coming from as they approach an airport. te.htm Malcolm & Jeanne Brubaker Michigan Sport Pilot Repair LSRM-A, PPC, WS Aviation Scholarships Our EAA Chapter 1093 will, again, be awarding Aviation Scholarships in These Scholarships are to provide financial assistance and moral support to a deserving person who is seeking aviation education such as flight training, A&P certification, etc. Any Chapter member may nominate anyone who they think deserves one of these Scholarships. The deadline for nominating these individuals will be March 31, These nominating forms are available on the bulletin board at our EAA Building and are also attached to this Newsletter. Our Scholarship committee is: Dot Hornsby, Chair, Jack Hallett, and Pete Swan. Preference will be given to the student taking flying lessons if applicants are of equal qualifications. Two references are required (these forms are part of the application packet). Applications are available at the Midland Area Community Foundation, 76 Ashman Circle, Midland, MI. or online at Midlandfoundation.org.

Young Eagles Update In spite of the cold weather and the snow, we had a very brave Young Eagle and a pilot who took off: We need help finding a 'derelict' airplane!! The Midland Area Community Discovery Area (MCADA) is looking for a (cheap-donated) old plane that can be safely modified to be placed in this area for visitors to experience being close to a 'real airplane' and also being able to sit in it. Do any you have any leads on such an airplane? If so please contact the Chair of this committee: John Abbott - jacksbird@charter.net or Chris Anderson at andersonflyer95@gmail.com. Thanks! Dot The wisdom of pilots on flying (Received from Stan Jensen) Pilots are people who drive airplanes for other people who can't fly. Passengers are people who say they fly, but really just ride. Fighter Pilots are steely eyed, weapons systems managers who kill bad people and break things. However, they can also be very charming and personable. The average fighter pilot, despite sometimes having a swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring. (However, these feelings don't involve anyone else). Flying is a hard way to earn an easy living. Both optimists and pessimists contribute to society. The optimist invents the airplane; the pessimist, the parachute. Death is just nature's way of telling you to watch your airspeed. As a pilot only two bad things can happen to you (and one of them will): a. One day you will walk out to the aircraft, knowing it is your last flight. b. One day you will walk out to the aircraft, not knowing it is your last flight. There are rules and there are laws: The rules are made by men who think that they know how to fly your airplane better than you. The laws (of physics) were ordained by God. You can and sometimes should suspend the rules, but you can never suspend the laws. About Rules: a. The rules are a good place to hide if you don't have a better idea and the talent to execute it. b. If you deviate from a rule, it must be a flawless performance (e.g., if you fly under a bridge, don't hit the bridge.) Before each flight, make sure that your bladder is empty and your fuel tanks are full. He who demands everything that his aircraft can give him is a pilot; he who demands one iota more is a fool. There are certain aircraft sounds that can only be heard at night and over the ocean. Most of them are scary. The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits. "If the Wright brothers were alive today, Wilbur would have to fire Orville to reduce costs."

In the Alaskan bush, I'd rather have a two-hour bladder and three hours of gas than vice versa. An old pilot is one who can remember when flying was dangerous and sex was safe. Airlines have really changed; now a flight attendant can get a pilot pregnant. I've flown in both pilot seats. Can someone tell me why the other one is always occupied by an idiot? And my favorite; You have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming a pilot. You can't do both. Engineer helps build Santa a better sleigh A bit late for this year s Christmas; Santa's oldfashioned carriage-style sleigh may have done the trick in the past, but redesigning Santa's sleigh for aerodynamic efficiency is urgently required. Under the current design the reindeer would have to work extremely hard to pull those clunky sleighs through the air. A team of fluid engineers from the software firm ANSYS analyzed the aerodynamics of Kris Kringle's ride and created one that had less drag, which means less work for those tired reindeer. It remains to be seen if next year s ride will be more efficient. You can check the improved new design here EAA 1093 Board Meeting Minutes December 18, 2014 President Mike Woodley called meeting to order at 6:03 pm.
