2 Brothers, 2006 has been an eventful year in the life and history of Alpha Kappa Chapter. Among all the positives it was also unfortunately marked by the death of Brother R. Dan Culp, AKSN99. Dan Culp will forever be remembered as one of the Giants of Alpha Kappa Chapter. All who knew him, or knew of his loyalty, dedication and love for the fraternity owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for his unfailing service for some 50 years as an undergraduate and alumnus. Thanks to the leadership of Brothers Max Gregory, Brent Hurd, and the participation of several others the R. Dan Culp Leadership Scholarship fund has already exceeded the $25,000 minimum to qualify as an officially endowed scholarship of the university. Brothers, Another semester has come and gone and now summer is upon us. I know for all the brothers summer is a time to relax and take a break from our schoolwork, but we will all miss our friends until the fall. This spring has been another great semester for the Alpha Kappa Chapter. In February we had nine brothers attend the leadership seminar, which took place in Nashville, Tennessee. That weekend was a very enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone. We had the chance the meet several other AGRs from across the nation and take part in several beneficial workshops. Our Alumni President s Report I encourage all Alpha Kappa members to contribute to this scholarship fund in honor of Dan s life and service. The 2006 edition of the Alpha Kappa Directory is being dedicated in honor of Brother R. Dan Culp. Your association is in a sound financial position. Maintaining a strong financial base through annual alumni voluntary dues and gifts to the capital account sets us apart from other fraternities on campus and greatly enhances our reputation and credibility with UT administrators. I cannot over emphasize the importance of maintaining a good relationship with university administration in a time when the Greek system generally is being critically evaluated. I want to especially commend our chapter advisers, Bobby Simpson, Charles Noble Ruler s Report chapter was also fortunate enough to perform the initiation ceremony at the conference. The Pink Rose formal is always the highlight of the spring semester. This year our chapter traveled to Charleston, South Carolina and spent two nights at the Holiday Inn on the beach. Despite the weather, the brothers enjoyed sight seeing in downtown Charleston and our dinner at Anson s restaurant. In April, our chapter participated in Carnicus with the ladies of Phi Mu. We performed a humorous skit titled Frat Raiders which placed us fifth overall in the competition. Mudbowl is also another event Hall, and Joe Harrison for the tremendous contribution they are making as they communicate and work with UT administrators. I want to especially thank Bobby Simpson for his work in putting together and submitting an excellent Alpha Kappa application to the national fraternity to compete for the 2006 Outstanding Alumni Corporation award. Because of Bobby s good work, I think we will compete very well for the national recognition. Maintaining an up-to-date alumni directory is an important function of our association. I hope you will enjoy this new edition and use it to stay in touch. Dan Wheeler, AKSN 227 that everyone looks forward too each year. This year we had a great turnout and were able to raise a significant amount of money for the American Diabetes Association. After Mudbowl, our brothers enjoyed Nashville Star s Jared Ashley who performed for us at the New Amsterdam. The summer will be over before we know it and we will all be ready for another great semester at I hope everyone has a great rest of the summer and we look forward to seeing you at Homecoming in the fall. Wesley Keele, AKSN 984 University News Dr. H. Charles Goan, AKSN 220, is currently serving as Interim Dean of UT Extension. For many years, Goan worked as the State Poultry Specialist for UT Extension, and more recently served as Head for the Department of Food Science and Technology. We are very proud of Dr. Goan, and the outstanding job that he is doing for the people of Tennessee. Be sure and check us out at our Alpha Kappa web site at
3 As many of you already know Dan Culp, AKSN 99, passed away on March 5, Alpha Kappa will miss him immensely. He contributed in many ways and will always be remembered. The following articles are the memories shared by brothers of Dan, and his major contributions. Introducing the Yard-Dog I met Dan Culp in the fall of 1949 when he entered Donelson High School in middle Tennessee as a freshman. I was a junior at that time and our paths crossed many times. We were both on the football team but neither of us was a star. Dan s family farm was about ten miles from our family farm. One of the specialty items from the Culp farm was peanuts, something not grown in Donelson. From this crop Dan obtained the nickname Peanut. The Dan I met then and the one I visited two days prior to his untimely passing were the same. As Dan graduated high school in 1953, I had been at UT two years and was a member of AGR. I convinced Dan that he needed to become an AGR and drove him to Knoxville in May of The following day it was necessary for me to report to Ft. Jackson, South Carolina and a two-year stint in the Army. Clarence Barbee was going to be at UT during the summer and agreed to look after Dan. That s how an unbelievable epic began. Somewhere along the way, the nickname Peanut changed to Yard-Dog. The name was significant enough to Dan that he signed all artwork as such. He had inherited his mother s artistic ability. Dan and I both chose real estate as a career but never strayed from our rural backgrounds. In 1964, when I became a licensed real estate salesman, my first customers were Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Culp, Dan s parents. My first sale was the Culp family farm. With Dan, what you see is what you get. He was always planning new schemes and had a vision for new ideas. He had the ability to follow through and perfect all of his many projects. All AGRs in the past and the future owe him a debt of gratitude for service to the fraternity. Brent Hurd, AKSN 78 Remembering Dan Culp A Little Brother Remembered On the 8th day of July in 1964, R. Dan Culp signed a contract with the university as President of Alpha Gamma Rho Tennessee Alumni Building Association, he took a great leap of faith, which was to characterize his performance for years to come. When the Yale Avenue Urban Renewal Project became a reality, Dan saw a need for a place for fraternity houses and quickly went into a sales mode and persuaded Dr. Andy Holt and others that a fraternity row would be a good thing for the university and the fraternity houses that were scattered over the west end of the campus. Dan was finishing houses as an undergraduate as I was in law school, and when he graduated he went into residential real estate sales with Prewitt Realty Company. His goal was commercial real estate development, and we connected on a piece of commercial property at interchange 60 at Sweetwater, in which I had an interest through a condemnation case, and Dan sold 2.5 acres for $80,000, which at that time was a fantastic price. With this experience he was willing to tackle a big project and without any possibility of personal gain, he set out to sell the university on the fraternity row project. He had the courage to believe, Alpha Gamma Rho might be able to participate in the project, even though we had only a few alumni (less than 150) and none had been out of college long enough to have any cash in the bank above next month s mortgage payment. He signed a contract with UT, depositing $5,000 cash and agreed to pay an additional $10,000 when an architect was appointed with $8,000 more to be deposited for house furnishings and equipment. In a later supplemental agreement the cost of the house was set at approximately $85,000. On June 17, 1965, a further amendment set the cost at approximately $130,000, with $15,000 having been paid and leaving a balance of $11,000 to be raised from contributions. Dan managed to sell our old house at 1613 West Clinch for a $10,000 profit and with some early contributions the $15,000 had been paid. We then set out to raise the remaining $11,000 by personal contributions. I took on the job as campaign chairman and Dan undertook the job of dealing with the brothers that might be able to make larger contributions. It was a tough job and $100 was a big contribution, and it was usually done in payments. We had a high percentage of alumni contribute and finally came up with $10,000. I contributed the cost of printing and mailing a brochure, since we had no seed money for expenses. Dan and Dr. Bill Cole signed a personal note for the last $1,000. Not only did Dan conceive of the project but he also spent countless hours to make it work, and over the past 40 plus years his zeal never waned. Alpha Kappa owes a great debt of gratitude to R. Dan Culp. He provided an outstanding example of courage, vision, leadership and plain hard work that gives meaning to the term to make better men. It has been a matter of great personal pride over the years to be able to say that Yard-Dog was my little brother. J. Lewis Kinnard, AKSN 37
4 My Memory of Dan Culp After graduation in 1957, I left Tennessee and lived away for 41 years. During that time, my family and I made annual trips home and would normally visit Dan to catch up on AGR news. He kept up on the latest news from the undergraduates, told us who had been back for Homecoming and the happenings of our fellow alumni. During the summer of 2002, we moved back to Knoxville and I immediately called Dan. That call was the beginning of a very special relationship, which left me with many happy memories. Dan had begun to experience health problems and wanted someone to help him maintain the fraternity house. During that fall and the following winter, we covered every inch of the house, met with contractors and vendors who did work at the house and met with UT administrators. Those meetings often started with his explaining to them that they were incompetent, lazy and otherwise worthless. This I learned was a routine enjoyed by all. I remember one meeting ending with a UT Vice President threatening to call the campus cops to search Dan to find what he had stolen while in his office. These were fun meetings that displayed the respect and admiration everyone had for Dan. Everyone knew he loved AGR and the University of Tennessee. They also knew he led with his heart, was true to his word and took as well as he gave. Over the next year, Dan turned more of the housework over to me but was always a phone call away with sound advice. Since then, we have completed four large jobs and the contractors he used have submitted the lowest bids and have done good work. Their respect for Dan is apparent. Over the past few weeks, I have talked with most of them and they share our loss of a brother. He was the cement that held Alpha Kappa together for a lot of years. He took calculated risks, they had a way of working out to our advantage. His goal was that Alpha Kappa set the standard for all fraternities on the Knoxville campus. Less than 48 hours before his death he, once again, told me his image for the fraternity. He wanted the house to present an image of quality to match the quality of our brothers. He envisioned a dining room where parents, university officials and other visitors would be pleased to eat and socialize. Most of all, he wanted Alpha Kappa to continue producing campus and community leaders, men who would contribute toward a bright future for Tennessee. In short, he loved his brothers. Following Dan s death, I overheard a leading Knoxville businessman make this statement. He said we have lost the developer who set the standard for area development. He was honest, honorable, generous and a great friend. We have lost a brother. One who was steadfast, faithful and taught us how to be brothers. He worked to make us better men. Joe Harrison, AKSN 111 The R. Dan Culp AGR Leadership Scholarship No one in Alpha Kappa Chapter was more devoted and committed than Dan Yard-Dog Culp. From the mid 1950s until the day he died, Culp s thoughts were on Alpha Kappa and how to make it better and to keep it the top fraternity on the UT campus. Culp believed Alpha Kappa s success on campus was highly correlated to leadership by individual brothers. That is the reason the Culp scholarship is being designated to leadership or as the Yard-Dog would say the BMOC. Important Dates I recall in 1997 when we were honoring our past Noble Rulers, Culp stood before our group asking for money to support one of our collegiate brothers who was running for a campus office. In passing the hat, along with Culp s donation, we secured several hundred dollars. That was the way Culp thought and that is why this Culp Scholarship will be directed to that collegiate brother who, in fact, is Big Man On Campus, and whose reputation reverberates throughout the UT campus. If you wish to support the scholarship, your checks should be made out to University of Tennessee, and designated to the Dan Culp Scholarship. Send your checks to Max E. 5 Spontaneous Support for Dan Culp s Scholarship On the eve of our 2006 Founders Day at Brother Jody Harrison s country club, a unique happening was experienced. About 6:30 p.m. during our social hour, one of our brothers handed me a check, stating, This gift is to initiate the Dan Culp scholarship About 9:00 p.m., after concluding a social hour of great brotherhood and an excellent dinner, I stood and said, I wish to offer a toast to the Yard- Dog the number one Alpha Kappa Chapter member in AGR. My wife here will serve as our secretary and will be taking down names of brothers who will join our initiator of the Dan Culp Scholarship. I offer the first $1,000, now who will be next? My wife could hardly keep pace with the tremendous response. In less than five minutes, we had $14,000 to kick off the Dan Culp scholarship!! Tee Culp, sitting across from me, looked surprised, but it did not surprise me because I know the respect and honor of how the brothers feel about Dan. Since that night, we have continued to receive major gifts from those I contacted who I believed to be especially close to Culp. In fact, I felt that I was obligated to contact certain individuals first to provide that opportunity before we opened it to our general membership to respond. A scholarship at UT must have at least $25,000 to be endowed. I believe that we will substantially exceed that amount for Culp. UT allows 5 percent of our principal to be offered as a scholarship each year. For example, if we have $40,000 in our scholarship fund, we can give a deserving collegiate brother a $2,000 scholarship. All collegiate brothers from the 1950s until 2006 remember Dan Culp. He was always around the house in his concern to keep it up and in assisting the undergraduate chapter in anyway he could. I have said on several occasions that this is the easiest fund raising I have done for Alpha Kappa. In fact, it s more like offering the opportunity to brothers to respond and they have responded accordingly!! Max Gregory, AKSN 58 Glyn Ed Newton Named Alumnus of the Year Last spring, the undergraduate members of Alpha Kappa named Glyn Ed Newton, AKSN 206, the Alumnus of the Year. The undergraduates felt that this honor should be bestowed to Glyn Ed, due to his great support of Alpha Kappa. Along with dedicating much time and assistance to the new recruitment plan, Glyn Ed has also allowed many undergraduate members to participate in the Dale Carnegie Leadership course. This course and Glyn Ed s assistance has proved to be invaluable over the past few years. Glyn Ed also supports AGR in many other ways. He is currently Vice President of the Alpha Kappa Alumni Association, and has served as Regional Vice President of AGR, and on the AGR Educational Foundation Board. Glyn Ed has also spoke at Alpha Kappa Chapter Adviser Dr. Charles Hall, AKSN 628, presents Brother Newton with the Alumnus of the Year plaque at the Parent/Founders Day banquet. Crescent Publishing Service national workshops, national conventions, and leadership seminars for AGR. Glyn Ed graduated from UT in 1964 and received a bachelor s of science degree in animal science. While at UT, he served as noble ruler for Alpha Kappa, was very active in Block and Bridle, Ag Council, and the meat and livestock judging teams. He also served as editor of the Tennessee Farmer Magazine. Glyn Ed continues to uphold his agricultural background by maintaining a cattle herd and family farm for over 10 years. He also served on the Forestry and Wildlife committee and coordinated $200,000 of available scholarships. Alpha Kappa congratulates Glyn Ed Newton and encourages him to maintain the qualities that make him great. This issue of the Alpha Kappa Crescent was published through the Crescent Publishing Service (CPS). This is a special project of the AGR Home Office to assist chapters in improving communications with alumni. Chapters pay a small fee for the service, below the actual production cost, to encourage regular contact. This project is made possible by donations from alumni like you. Please consider contributing using the enclosed card.

7 I appreciate all who have donated to the Norman Willis Retirement Fund and hope that more will consider donating. Remember, I am only asking for $20 from 100 Alpha Kappa brothers. Through May, the following 15 brothers have raised $655: Scott Burton, Lake Elliott, Aaron Fisher, Steve Hamblen, Ben Harris, Jeffrey Hasty, John Hickman, Sam Hilton, Phillip Hodges, Willis Jepson, Jimmy Klotz, Tom Looney, Gentry McCreary, Jim Norman Willis Retirement Fund Morris and Jeremy Voigtmann. The goal is $2000 and we are not even halfway to the goal. To those of you that have given to the fund, thank you, and please spread the word to others that have not and encourage them to donate. To those of you who have not, please consider donating. Surely you can spare $20. My challenge to you is to have at least $1000 more submitted by Homecoming on September 23, which is when the undergraduate chapter will be defending their Homecoming Championship from last year. This is an opportunity to help out Norman and say thank you for his many years of service to Alpha Kappa.
