The association provides broad influence and a full range of services satisfying the needs and concerns of its members, partners and the industry, thereby improving the quality of construction and protecting the public interest. A small sample of the activities we address on a daily basis includes Alabama AGC staff and leadership diligently serving the membership s interests and needs through advocacy and liaisons with state agencies, the Alabama Legislature, Congress and other federal agencies. 4 Meet the Class of 2018 Culley Allgood, 36 Culley Allgood is an assistant area manager for Bayou Concrete LLC in Theodore. Allgood began working for Bayou Concrete in 2007 after graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi. He started off in the company s quality assurance program, where he worked on many projects, including the Ocean Springs and Biloxi Bridge. Allgood previously worked as the company s operations manager, before being promoted to assistant area manager in January, Justin Allred, 35 Justin Allred is a project executive for BL Harbert International in Birmingham. Allred joined the company in 2005 as a project manager and has since managed more than $420 million in construction projects. Allred has worked on several of the nation s most important military bases, as well as some of the company s most highprofile projects, such as the Airbus facility and Mercedes-Benz Body Shop expansion. Brad Avery, 39 Brad Avery is a senior vice president for Rives Construction Co. in Birmingham. During Avery s 15 years with Rives Construction, the company has seen significant growth. His dedication and leadership skills have played a large part in Rives success. He has been a leader of many of the company s projects, including numerous automotive facilities such as Mercedes-Benz of Birmingham, Cahaba Brewing, Regions Bank and Virginia College. Mac Caddell, 38 Mac Caddell is the executive vice president of Caddell Construction Co. in Montgomery. Caddell has been a key factor in the company s success and growth over the past 15 years. His résumé includes an $11 billion project portfolio, made up of projects around the United States and across five continents. He is an active member of his community and currently serves as chairman of the AGC s Naval Facilities Engineering Command Committee. John Corbell, 38 John Corbell, P.E., is an engineering manager for OMI Inc. in Huntsville. Corbell has assisted the construction industry by serving in construction and engineering associations. In 2011, Corbell received the North Alabama ASCE Engineer of the Year. His project portfolio includes multiple downtown Huntsville developments, Grissom High School, Lee High School, Zierdt Road improvements and Milton Frank Stadium improvements. Derak Davis, 36 Derak Davis is an assistant superintendent for Forsyth Building Co. Inc. in Anniston. Davis began working in the commercial construction industry only a year ago and has accomplished a great amount in this time. He began as a carpenter before being promoted to an assistant superintendent, and is now training to be a superintendent. 7 Jay Davison, 35 Jay Davidson is a CEI project manager for Thompson Engineering in Mobile. Davison joined the company in 2006 as an engineering intern, and after proving his commitment and capability, he was promoted to his current position. As CEI Project Manager, he is responsible for the project management of all construction engineering and inspection work for the company s transportation projects. Justin Dean, 36 Justin Dean is a managing partner for Clements Dean Building Co. in Wilsonville. Dean graduated from Auburn University in 2006 with a bachelor s degree in biomedical sciences and a master s degree in business administration and has been rising in the ranks of Clements Dean ever since. Dean has served as a superintendent, project manager and estimator before being named managing partner in Richard Deas, 39 Richard Deas is an estimator and project manager for Cunningham Delaney Construction LLC in Magnolia Springs. Before he joined Cunningham Delaney Construction, Deas worked as an estimator and project manager for Ben M. Radcliff Contractor Inc. in Mobile, where he began his involvement with AGC. He was elected to the Mobile Section AGC Board of Directors and now serves as vice president. AGC of alabama 40 under 40 Derek Dexter, 39 Derek Dexter is a chief preconstruction manager for Brasfield & Gorrie in Birmingham. Dexter manages estimates for the company s infrastructure, power and utilities divisions. In addition to leading teams of estimators, he works with diverse subcontractors and suppliers to create successful projects with clients, including the Alabama Department of Transportation, Birmingham Water Works and other municipalities across the Southeast. Outside of work, Dexter is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Association of Cost Engineers. Kevin Garrison, 39 Kevin Garrison is a shareholder and attorney at Baker Donelson in Birmingham. Garrison has built a thriving legal practice as the only attorney in the state of Alabama accredited by the U.S Green Building Council as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional for Building Design & Construction. Garrison concentrates his practice in construction litigation, representing owners, contractors, subcontractors and suppliers in all aspects of construction disputes. 9 Rafael Juan RJ Gonzales III, 38 Rafael Juan RJ Gonzales III, P.E., is a department manager for Southern Earth Sciences Inc. in Mobile. Gonzales has been with the company since 2002, and after continuous hard work and dedication, he was promoted to construction material department manager in He oversees the entire department s operation of 18 field and laboratory technicians and office staff. He also has served as SESI s project engineer on hundreds of projects, most notably the ThyssenKrupp Steel Mill Project. In addition to his career achievements, he has been an active member of AGC since 2002, as well as the Construction Leadership Council. Cory Holcomb, 31 Cory Holcomb is a project manager and vice president for SJ&L Inc. in Mobile. Since joining the company in 2012, Holcomb has proved to be a tremendous asset to the business. He has worked tirelessly to insure that estimates, billings and all associated papers are in order and exceed the expectations of clients. Holcomb plays a key role in the company and continuously performs his upper management duties in an exceptional manner. Greg Hovater, 35 Greg Hovater is the vice president of H&N Construction Inc. in Florence. After graduating from Auburn University in 2005, Hovater began working in the construction industry as a project engineer with Hardin Construction in Atlanta. He later returned to his hometown of Florence to join H&N Construction. Hovater s involvement with Alabama AGC includes having served as president of the Shoals Section. Ben Jones, 35 Ben Jones is a project manager and secretary/treasurer for Whaley Construction Co. Inc. in Troy. Jones has AGC of alabama 40 under 40 been the project manager for numerous multimillion-dollar projects during his time at Whaley Construction. He has the ability to take on an immense amount of work under pressure and is willing to take on whatever task and responsibility needed to complete a project. Jones is also involved in his community and received the Leadership Pike certificate from the Pike County Chamber of Commerce. Amber Kinney, 37 Amber Kinney is a human resources director and EEO officer for Dunn Construction Co. in Birmingham. Active with many committees and associations, she served previously as president of the Greater Birmingham Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction. 10 Kyle Maddox, 31 Kyle Maddox is president of Virginia Wrecking Co. Inc. in Daphne. Maddox understands the importance of safety, as he is committed to growing a company with safety and environmental training. Virginia Wrecking Co. Inc. has been awarded the AGC Safety Award eight times since Maddox has been with the company. Maddox is currently a member of the Mobile AGC board of directors and the National Demolition board of directors, and he is chairman of the National Demolition Association safety committee. Barkley Mallette, 29 Barkley Mallette is a project manager and treasurer for WAR Construction Inc. in Tuscaloosa. Mallette has served as a senior project manager on many projects, including several large fraternity and sorority houses at the University of Alabama, and the structural stabilization of the historic Peter Bryce Mental Hospital. In addition to his work, he is an active AGC member and a founding board member of Alabama AGC West Section Construction Leadership Council. Mallette has held many positions as a member of Alabama AGC s West Section, and is currently incoming president. Joe McAbee, 30 Joe McAbee is a project manager assistant for McAbee Construction Inc. in Tuscaloosa. McAbee is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law and has been a member of the Alabama Bar since He joined McAbee Construction in 2015, and has worked in almost every area of the company, including managing payroll and working as a part of the HR, AR, workforce development, billing, negotiation and jobsite supervision teams. Anne McCarley, 36 Anne McCarley is an executive construction underwriter for Hartford Bond in Birmingham. McCarley has spent 11 years as a surety underwriter with a sole focus on the construction industry. 11 AGC of alabama 40 under 40 to her work, she has actively participated in several construction-related organizations including Alabama AGC and the Alabama Surety Association, where she served as secretary in 2010, vice president in 2011 and president in 2012, and has been on the board of directors since Sam McCaskey, 31 Sam McCaskey is an operations manager for Pate Landscape Co. Inc. in Montgomery. McCaskey has worked at Pate Landscape for three years, demonstrating his leadership skills throughout his time with the company. He is an active member of AGC. Ryan McClendon, 39 Ryan McClendon is vice president of J. Smith Lanier & Co. in Birmingham. McClendon joined the company after graduating from Auburn University in 2002, with a specialization in property and casualty insurance and surety bonds. McClendon co-developed and presented A Practical Study of Contractor Surety Bonds, a program designed for the Auburn University School of Building Science contracting business class. He also is a multi-year recipient of the Excellence in Surety Bond Promotion, an honor awarded by the Surety Information Office in Washington, D.C. 12 Josh McElhenney, 37 Josh McElhenney is the president and owner of McElhenney Construction in Mobile. Before establishing his company, McElhenney worked for Alabama Department of Transportation as a civil engineer and later joined John G. Walton Construction Co., where he worked for seven years. In 2013 he formed McElhenney Construction, a heavy highway company. In addition to his business, he is involved with several organizations. In 2015, he served as chairman of the Mobile Section AGC s Construction Leadership Council. He also serves on the Mobile Section AGC board of directors, and currently serves as president of the Mobile County Road Builders Association. Wesley Middleton, 39 Wesley Middleton is a project manager for Rob Middleton Construction LLC in Mobile. After studying new technology and its benefits, Middleton successfully converted the company s entire commercial division to intelligent equipment. He also is the company s subject matter expert in construction modeling and layout. Middleton has accomplished all of this with less than three years of experience in the construction business, making his achievements even more impressive. Gaines Moorer, 33 Gaines Moorer is the vice president of Lakeview Risk Partners in Birmingham. Moorer has served the construction and real estate industries for more than 10 years. He has experience working with clients as an advisor for insurance, surety and risk management throughout all segments of the construction and real estate industry. Ross Moyer, 28 Ross Moyer is a safety and compliance manager for White-Spunner Construction Inc. in Mobile. At a young age, Moyer has accomplished great success when it comes to safety and awareness. He was named Alabama Safety Director of the Year in 2017 and Mobile Area Safety Leader of the Year in Moyer personally performs safety audits multiple times a month for each of the company s jobsites across the Southeast and beyond. He leads meetings to educate workers on the jobsite about safety and awareness and administers safety training programs and evaluations to company employees. Brian Cole Nelson, 24 Brian Nelson is a project manager for Martin & Cobey Construction Co. Inc. in Athens. Nelson graduated from Auburn University with a degree in building sciences and has utilized his education to effectively manage commercial and industrial construction projects. He also has been instrumental in the development of new software systems that Martin & Cobey has patented and implemented. 14 Bret Paulk, 38 Bret Paulk is a project manager and estimator for H. O. Weaver and Sons Inc. in Mobile. Paulk is a 2004 civil engineering graduate of the University of South Alabama and is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Alabama. Paulk is involved with multiple organizations and has served on the AGC-sponsored Young Constructors Forum steering committee for many years. In addition, he has been actively involved with the Mobile County Roadbuilders Association for many years and currently serves as a general contractors director and a member of the liaison committee. Jesse Lee Ray, 38 Jesse Lee Ray is the president of Coats Electric Co. in Florence. After graduating from Central High School, Ray immediately began working for Coats Electric. Seventeen years later, he purchased the company and now serves as the president. Stephen Riley, 34 Stephen Riley is an operations manager for BL Harbert International in Birmingham. In Riley s nine years with the company, he has moved up from an assistant project manager to an operations manager in the commercial division. He has managed more than $450 million in construction projects, and under his leadership the commercial division has seen a 100 percent increase in revenue. Riley has been an active member of the AGC Construction Leadership Council since Seth Smith, 38 Seth Smith is vice president of construction operations for Rolin Construction Inc. in Atmore. Smith graduated from Auburn University with a degree in building sciences and has had close to 20 years of experience in the field. He is a respected member of the Rolin Executive Team and serves as a mentor to the project managers, estimators and superintendents who serve under him. 17 Shaun Stapleton, 34 Shaun Stapleton is a project manager and senior estimator at John G. Walton Construction Co. Inc. in Mobile. Stapleton graduated from Auburn University in 2007 with a degree in building sciences. He has quickly adapted to the highway construction business, and has shown exceptional work ethic, diligence and leadership. Stapleton is very active in the Alabama AGC and the Mobile Construction Leadership Council. Patrick Swann, 34 Patrick Swann is a pipe fabrication manager for McAbee Construction Inc. in Tuscaloosa. Swann was previously an assistant project manager and then a project manager for the company before being promoted to his current position. He is a member of the Chi Epsilon Engineering Honor Society, the National Society of Professional Engineers and in 2017 received professional mentor recognition from the University of Alabama College of Engineering. Brad Tew, 35 Brad Tew is a senior project manager for Brasfield & Gorrie in Birmingham. Tew has quickly risen through the ranks at Brasfield & Gorrie, managing 15 projects that are worth a combined total of $340 million in his 11 years with the company. He also plays a key leadership role in the company, serving on the healthcare business development committee and the recruiting and steering committee. Tew is impacting the construction profession through his involvement and leadership in AGC, and is currently serving as president of Alabama AGC Construction Leadership Council. Cory Varden, 36 Cory Varden is a project manager for Rives Construction Co. in Birmingham. His projects include the Historic Federal Reserve Building in downtown Birmingham, High Point Climbing & Fitness, the Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing Center and Hand Arendall. 19 Joshua Wilburn Katie Voss, 34 Katie Voss is a corporate risk manager for Brasfield & Gorrie in Birmingham. Voss work ethic, thoroughness and can-do attitude have allowed her to become a vital member of the Brasfield & Gorrie leadership team. She is currently managing a team of eight. Outside of work, she is on the supervisory committee for America s First Federal Credit Union and is involved in various nonprofit organizations. Adam J. White, 33 Adam White is an attorney at Emmanuel Sheppard & Condon in Pensacola, Florida. White is a young but experienced construction lawyer and has served on the Young Lawyers Board of Governors for the Florida Bar for the past several years. He has developed a special expertise in the area of insurance law and regularly provides legal advice to general contractor and subcontractor clients, many of whom are based in Alabama. Joshua Wilburn, 37 Josh Wilburn is a project manager for Johnson Contractors Inc. in Muscle Shoals. Wilburn graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. in building construction. He has extensive experience in both industrial and commercial construction work, as a construction manager, project coordinator, cost estimator and project manager. 20 AGC of alabama 40 under 40 Virnetta Woodbury Zack Young Virnetta Woodbury, 36 Virnetta Woodbury is a project manager for Brasfield & Gorrie in Birmingham. Beyond her work as a project manager, Woodbury is the 2018 president of the Greater Birmingham Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction, and in 2017 was the National NAWIC Member of the Year. She has promoted and championed women in construction and works as a mentor for young women in the industry. Zack Young, 39 Zack Young is an operations manager for S&ME Inc., in Huntsville. Young served as a project manager and department manager at the company before being promoted to his current position in Young serves as president of the board for the Huntsville Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute.
