This is meant as a how too upgrade from the existing Th9x Factory IRIS or IRIS+.

1 Taranis Plus. First thing that will save you a Ton of time, when you get to the point in this tutorial, when plugging in your Taranis, you will see on your local computer, Taranis, but you will also see an SD card from the Taranis, whatever sound file changes you make, or want, need to be loaded into the SOUNDS/EN Folder, there is also a system folder in that folder, those are for system sounds. You Must also Load the sound files to where you are working from, for example, if you are working from c:/desktop/taranis, that folder needs the sound files as well to test the file prior to uploading it to taranis. More on this later. This is meant as a how too upgrade from the existing Th9x Factory IRIS or IRIS+. The Taranis Plus, OpenTX Radio is a fully functional telemetry solution. If moving from IRIS, you will also need to purchase and install, the Ful-1 FrSky RS-232 Converter which will be installed using the S.Port of your DR4-II receiver. That will take another How Too Guide. If moving from IRIS+, you are good to go with regard to telemetry. This guide will not be all inclusive, but more so, some helpful steps as I see them as snag points, I ran into along the way. The first thing you will want to do, is install the battery in the Radio, mine came unplugged but in it s slot, and charge it Set up the date time etc, Battery range

2 Next, you will want to go through the various screens to set up the voltage for your radio pack, mine came set for 12 Volts, these radios work off a 7.2vdc pack, See the range above. Set your low battery alarm at 6.5 Volts, or higher if you like.

3 These are the various settings screens and should be set up to your liking with regard to color, sound, duration, haptic, etc. From here, you should download and install the latest firmware, which will also have the OpenTX companion, I work off a PC using windows, I m not aware of any Mac issues, or how to fix them, so please don t ask ;-) Download is here At this point is a good time to get the firmware loaded into the radio. To connect the radio to your computer, you will want to hold the lower trim buttons in and switch it on like the 2 screens below, you do not have to plug it in at the same time, holding the trims and switching on will get it in the mode, then you can just plug it in.

4 On the above screen check for updates and it will walk you through the update firmware process. Next, you want to edit settings

5 Very important to select the correct Radio type Also, create a folder on your desktop and name it Taranis Down at the bottom of this screen, point to that folder where is says SD structure path.

6 The above shows a find executable for google earth, not necessary, unless you want to look at the logs Taranis can create for your flights, but if you want it, show the program where you have google earth stored. This needs to be activated for each flight, I have not done it yet, but may do so and will add to the how to. The user splash screens, will be used if you want to edit the opentx screen when the radio starts, and this is the path it will be saved. Again, not important for radio setup. Once this loads, open up and create a new model. At this point is where you can download someone else s.eepe file for simplicity Click on file and go through their settings to keep what you want and change or discard what you don t.

7 Keep in mind, while the.eepe file is easy, there are draw backs, first, you must have the same sound files in the same places and use the same switches, or it s a waste of time, you will need to go through it anyway. I first use Ian s.eepe, but for those of you know don t know, Ian is a Britt, and they drive on the wrong side of the road over there, so, I needed to find another solution to his switches. I then looked at Dax s eepe file and his switches and they were more in-line with what I was looking to do and that was to keep much of the same placement as the Original IRIS and also keep it in line with the current IRIS + mode switches, to make the transfer to Taranis easy, if giving up my.eepe, but with a few adds and changes. So here we go, it s going to be a bumpy ride. (1) RTFM. (2) Once you decided that you RTFM and are still lost, continue with this guide. Not unlike our copters, look at this in these terms, you can make all the changes you want in companion, there is even a simulator at the bottom that pulls up the inputs and outputs to test changes you ve made, noting happens in the radio until you send it, but we ll get to that. At this point if you chose to use someone s.eepe file, you will basically need to work through their settings, I will upload the.eepe file that goes with this guide, and if you download and install it, as well as the sound file, there is really no reason the radio would not do exactly what mine does, the more you play with it, the more familiar you will be come, and changes to it won t seem so onerous.

8 Click General settings, that will bring you to this screen. This is basically the radio set-up screen, except in companion, Most important on this screen is: Stick mode and Default channel order. RTEA Means: Rudder, Throttle, Elevator, Aieleron The trainer tab is for setting up a trainer radio. Don t worry about calibrations, you can play with that later, or now, but I would suggest doing that for screen 8/8 on the radio, it pretty much leads you through the process Back to this screen click on your new model and this screen, and the bellow screen will pop up. This is basically where all the magic happens, here you can name your model select the model image etc feel free to copy these settings and if you need further explanation just ask. This page assumes you will want a timer, you can set the value to whatever you want. I ll go through the settings and what they mean real quick. Model: Obvious, Timer, Obvious, During the countdown, the radio will tell you, 1 Minute, 2 Minutes, 3 Minutes, etc. Throttle Source DUH, that s the throttle channel, Throttle warning, is when you turn your radio on and the throttle is not lowered, it will tell you.

9 Warnings, the radio will tell you when the switches are in the wrong position at start up. Internal Radio is a D-8 Start at 1 end at 8 Flight Modes Tabs, the next 6 screen shots are very similar, copy them exactly, and the screens that follow and it will start to make sense you can change flight modes from mine, but keep in mind that every change you make, will need to be made on several other screens. Disregard Flight mode Zero, I have RTL written in it, but it s not really a mode and has no function at this time. RTL is an actual mode on Flight mode 6. If you are using my.eepe file this will all be done for you, if you are plugging the information in, screen by screen, You will see Switch L1, L2, L3, those are referenced to logical switches that I will get to at a later screen shot. The Next 6 screen shots are if you are plugging in this info IF, you are changing from my flight modes, just make sure what you want, jives with Mission planner flight modes 1 thu 6, Top to Bottom, and then you will need to update the sound file to call out that mode when you are in it, I ll get to that later.

12 Next is the inputs screen, again, if you are using my.eepe, it will be done, if not, happy plugging.

13 Next is Mixes, using my.eepe no need to do anything, doing it on your own, this is what you will need, the is set up for 2 mode switches, SC & SD The left Switch controls voice volume. With the right switch on the side of the radio controlling gimbal and the SF switch for land. ( Back Left Long throw switch)

14 This is probably the most important screen to the radio, it s where you tell the radio what switches go where. But basically we are telling the Radio, L1 = SC^ and SD^ puts us in Stable mode. It will make sense if you look at the mixes page in conjunction.

15 Finally, the fun page. Special functions. Now we tell the Radio, Special Function 1 (SF1) Which is switch L1, when it s engaged, to Play Track stblzmd 1 time, and so on.

16 Now that, that s all done, time to load it to your Radio. Ok so that s pretty much all the screens you will need. However, very important, when selecting Tracks for sound, if you are not using my eepe. Upload the file you want to use to the Taranis via your computer, then type the track in exactly how it is on the file, it cannot be any longer the 8 characters, no spaces. When you close each screen, you will be asked to save as, this is where you will rename your own.eepe file. Save it on your desk top.
