1 Analog Four - Midi sync questions/issues (Logic DAW) Posted by waffl /12/28 00:13 Hello, I am a bit new to all this so apologies if this is a simple question. I am trying to sync my Analog Four (OS 1.0.2) to Logic, but every time I do, it seems to be playing at a very irregular tempo compared to the metronome or anything else in Logic, if not twice as fast. (actually tapped it out, it is playing at about 150bpm instead of 120 when synced. Also happens in Live - On Mac, ) It is connected via USB. The only other audio device is a Scarlett 8i6 audio card which does have midi but I don't see why it would be transmitting anything that could interfere, also connected via USB. (edit: Also unplugged the audio card, so it is the -sole- device connected and it still happens) Here are my Logic Settings: On my Analog Four Global Midi Settings, I have under Midi Sync: Clock Receive Clock Send Transport Receive Transport Send Port Config: Turbo Speed Out Port Func - Midi Thru Port Func - Midi Input From - USB Output To - Disabled Output CH - Auto CH Param Output - NRPN... (is the rest relevant?) Any help sorting this would be greatly appreciated as I basically can't record anything until I get this sync figured out! Posted by accannis /01/02 05:24 Hi waffl - I am seeing the same problem. It looks to me like the Analog Four is summing the external midi clock with its own internal clock. I can't seem to figure out a way to make it take just the external clock. Maybe a bug? Posted by Dr.Eger /01/02 06:27 I had the same problem, but it synced fine via MIDI instead of USB. Set transmit to your Audio interface and select Transmit MTC and Transmit MMC... I have mine set up all via Midi MonoMachine into MD into Analog Four and it syncs fine here. No problems with recording and all that jazz either in sync with other material. I can sync a modular, but not an Elektron synth? Hm. Synth modules are made by people in their basements, this is supposed to be a big compay. I guess I'm just upset because it's my first Elektron piece and everybody raves about them and here I am with a $1200 toy because I can't actually record it. :angry: Posted by BroMontana /01/19 12:02 So, I got mine working with MIDI, somewhat. It sometimes starts putting out some sort of audio pulse if I use my controller, but I'll figure that out. It's still not ok for me because I already have 5 MIDI outs going so I had to unplug another synth, I'd really like to see MIDI over USB work like advertised. It's been measured, it's not hard to find. Maybe your unit is faulty? There seems to have been a few faulty units with the A4, which is definitely NOT acceptable, but you can get it replaced. I have no issues syncing the A4 to Ableton, have not tried Logic, since I find Logic terrible when it comes to handling sync. I like Ableton's way of giving you a different MIDI delay setting for each machine you're sending clock to, and allowing you to set such delay time in real - time while you're playing metronomes. Ableton kicks Logic's a$$ in that department, but regardless, you should be able to get reasonably tight sync going with Logic (although I still don't believe that is the software to use if you want to sync multiple hardware synths, since you don't get separate delay adjustments for each synth). We need to know which interface you're using, how it's connected to your computer, etc. Or, if like you say, you've been syncing hardware for years, you must be well aware that there are devices that help you achieve tight sync between hardware and software, since this is ALWAYS an issue, at some point or other. Look into Innerclock's Sync - Lock for a start. That is the device I use in the studio, and since I started using it about 5 years ago, I have never looked back. It is the backbone of my set up, without it, everything falls apart, with it, ALL my hardware is tightly synced to my DAW, it's unreal. If you are serious about hardware and software integration, you owe it to yourself to check out ways to achieve perfect, jitter free sync, regardless of your DAW. There are other devices the the Sync Lock, I don't work for Innerclock, do a bit of research :) Cheers! Posted by SecretMusic /01/19 21:25

5 As a side note, USB sync on the A4 is dodgy at the moment, have you tried syncing with MIDI? That would be the first step. Remember, this machine is pretty much still in beta. Do I like that fact? Certainly not! I have identified several issues with the A4, some are serious, and that, indeed makes the product not quite what it is advertized to be. It is, however, getting fixed and updated. It has become a bit of a habit for Elektron to release unfinished product, but be patient, it will get sorted, if there is an issue with syncing over USB. It works fine over MIDI in Logic, w/ the usual sync issues, but I can deal with those. The USB, however, is about 1000x beyond the usual sync issues. It seems as if the A4 is changing it's time signature or it's even just playing at random. If I wanted to use MIDI, I wouldn't care, but one of the selling points on the A4 was the MIDI over USB option. It does not work. That's all I'm saying and all I'm asking for is a fix or notification of Elektron's awareness. I want all my gear hooked up at once, I don't enjoy slowing down my creative process by unplugging MIDI cables and replugging them. I have used up all my MIDI ports and don't want to buy a MIDI hub just to use something that was advertised to not require that. See my point? I appreciate your last post, though. It's helpful to know that they just release stuff before it's done. Of course, that's a horribe, horibble thing, but whatever, it at least let's puts me more at ease (in some ways at least). I am, on the contrary, trying my best to promote the machines, as well as constructive criticism, and keep it somewhat light hearted. It's probably a tough balance to achieve. As much as i love Elektron's gear, and try to promote it (take a look at my YouTube channel), I am also very much able to pinpoint the flaws, and talk about them. But, I try to take those things with a grain of salt, as it is, in the end, debating about expensive machines that make weird bleeping noises. It's not that serious now, is it? Sorry if I didn't understand your complaint. And I agree completely, USB SHOULD work, however, it doesn't, for now. DIN sync doesn't work either, and I have complained about it at length. What i CAN say, though, it that I have no doubt it will get sorted. It's too bad that hardware is getting released in an unfinished state, but, as it has been pointed out, these machines are complex pieces of hardware, and sometimes it takes a bit of time, and stress testing to get them in full functional order. I had an Octatrack the first day they came out, and let me tell you, it was a total mess!! I'm afraid I cannot help you more regarding the USB issue, other than suggest you write to Elektron, stating your issues, your setup etc. Then be patient, and use MIDI for now, if you can deal with cables etc. I always have a few Thru boxes lying around, you can get one of those for cheap and split some MIDI from somewhere? 7 For sure, man. Thanks for your feedback and response. I agree, it's a stupid thing to get worked up about, haha. I'm not super pissed about the USB issue, I just lately have been noticing that most of the gear and software I buy, does not work 100%, so it does anger me when I get another issue. I usually stress myself out for a long time before making a purchase and review all the pros and cons, so when one of the pros turns into a con, it flips my whole process on it's head. That's really all it is and I should probably stop expecting fully functional products these days. It seems to be a rarity. I'm fine with MIDI at the moment (it's not like I actually use all my gear at once anyways). I am going to look into a sync box actually, because it may be a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion!
