COMPTON STAGE 10:00 AM Bluegrass Rangers The Bluegrass Rangers are a traditional bluegrass and oldtime fiddle band, originally forged from the crucible of the 2011 Delfest Academy.

The Rangers include Walker Magrath (fiddle), Shawn Twigg (five-string banjo), Aaron McConnell (guitar), Roy Weitzell (mandolin) and Roy Carls (bass and harmonica).

It broadcasts informational, educational and cultural programming 24 hours a day to the westernmost counties of Maryland and adjacent areas in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. COMPTON STAGE 10:00 AM Bluegrass Rangers The Bluegrass Rangers are a traditional bluegrass and oldtime fiddle band, originally forged from the crucible of the 2011 Delfest Academy. A seemingly misfit crew of pickers from the mountains of Maryland and West Virginia, the boys have settled into a groove they like to call, good barn pickin! The Rangers include Walker Magrath (fiddle), Shawn Twigg (five-string banjo), Aaron McConnell (guitar), Roy Weitzell (mandolin) and Roy Carls (bass and harmonica). 10:40 AM, 2:00 PM Highland Grass Highland Grass, a West Virginia-based band, is well-known around the Appalachian Mountain region and neighboring states for its harddriving, high-energy, traditional-style bluegrass and bluegrass gospel. Highland Grass is an acoustic five-piece band featuring banjo, fiddle, guitar and upright bass. At each show the band members will be found in constant motion around a single microphone, giving the audience tight harmonies and instrumental prowess the old-fashion way. 11:20 AM, 12:40 PM Lonesome Highway Based in Romney, W.Va., Lonesome Highway has been performing throughout the region for the last 15 years. Their superb solo and harmony singing accompanied by tight instrumentals and fresh new songwriting will leave you with an unforgettable bluegrass experience. The current show is high energy with a mix of moving ballads as well as some gospel and a great combination of original, traditional and contemporary material. Original members of the band, John Arnold (banjo) and Jimmy Kountz (mandolin), have been playing music together on and off for more than 20 years. Arnold is known for his timing, taste and drive on the banjo, while Kountz s vocals are some of the best in the business. Buddy Dunlap has been with the band since 2006 and is one of the youngest accomplished songwriters and guitar players on the circuit, taking third place at Merlefest in Mason Wright, arguably one of the finest young fiddlers in bluegrass today, joined LH in July of 2009, and Cody Brown, a tremendous bass player, joined the band in May

Dance and music styles represent the melting pot of cultural traditions in Appalachia and include old-time, bluegrass, traditional and contemporary clogging, flatfooting, body percussion, French Canadian step dance, waltz clog, square dancing and sean nos (old-style Irish percussive dance). 2:40 PM Grand Ole Ditch A home-brewed bluegrass band from Cumberland, Grand Ole Ditch is all about having some new fun with that old Appalachian sound. Featuring a serious lineup of musicians, including Dave Williams on the mandolin, Jacob Mathews on the upright bass, Jody Mosser on the Dobro, Ryan Hohing and Lucas Mathews on the guitars and Craig Miller on banjo, Grand Ole Ditch is quickly creating a strong following for itself in the mountain region and beyond. 3:20 PM Old Pitch With the Joe Duffey Dance Company The name Old Pitch is a friendly nod to the key of B. It is seldom used for Irish tunes today. But in this band, Kelly DeButts plays B as well as D pipes, and Jeff Thomas, inspired by the rich, mellow sound, custom-built a concertina in B, from which he squeezes an equally remarkable tone. When Pat Egan moved to Loudoun County, he started collaborating with Tabby Finch, and they quickly gained acclaim performing as a duo. DeButts and Finch have been with the Bog Wanderers for many years, and all three go way back with Thomas. For the last few years the four have pooled their talents as key players at the Round Hill Irish session. On stage they blend Egan s passionate singing with their unique instrumentals in a brilliant synergy. 9

SATURDAY COMPTON STAGE 4:00 PM Bear Hill Bluegrass Bear Hill Bluegrass is not your typical bluegrass band.

Bear Hill Bluegrass is friendly and down-home on stage, involving the audience with the band and songs throughout the show.

Ashby is joined by some the region s finest entertainers, delivering a quality and fast-moving show. Traditional and contemporary bluegrass genres are showcased during High Octane performances.

3 SATURDAY COMPTON STAGE 4:00 PM Bear Hill Bluegrass Bear Hill Bluegrass is not your typical bluegrass band. Even though they take pride in performing traditional bluegrass and gospel, they add just the right mix of classic country and comedy to please the audience and have fun. Bear Hill Bluegrass is friendly and down-home on stage, involving the audience with the band and songs throughout the show. 4:40 PM Marv Ashby and High Octane From the West Virginia Panhandle comes that hard-driving no holds barred bluegrass music courtesy of Marv Ashby and the High Octane band. Ashby is joined by some the region s finest entertainers, delivering a quality and fast-moving show. Traditional and contemporary bluegrass genres are showcased during High Octane performances. High Octane features Ashby s aggressive flatpicking style and straight-ahead vocal arrangements. Beardie powers the low end with percussive doghouse bass and brings to the show unique Beardie Tunes featuring traditional bluegrass vocal styling. Robbie Benzing rolls through the tunes with spot-on first-generation bluegrass drive and enthusiasm. 5:20 PM Community Hoedown With the Barnstormers The Barnstormers (Slim Harrison and Tom Jolin) perform concerts and residencies through Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. They performed recently at the Viljandi World Folk Fest in Estonia through grants from the Mid-Atlantic/Baltic Education and Commerce Organization, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the U.S. Embassy in Estonia. During residencies, Jolin leads students in making a hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, banjo and/or psaltery for the school, while Harrison teaches the music and dances for a final hoedown. The RockCandy Cloggers (Rock Howland and Candy Ranlet) often join the Barnstormers for festivals and school residencies, providing exciting clogging routines and teaching traditional clogging workshops. When not dancing, they join the band, adding a fullness that is perfect for concerts and dances. Howland and Harrison were recently awarded a Master-Apprentice Award from the Maryland Traditions Program of the Maryland State Arts Council. In 1889, the band became the Fourth Battalion Band at Camp Jackson, a component of the Maryland State Militia. Around the turn of the century, the band took an annual train trip to Luray, Va., for a performance in the caverns. After the Great War, many community bands faded into history, but the Arion Band flourished. Today, Arion Band members represent an intergenerational mix of male and female musicians, each member attracted to the band by his or her shared love of the music and the desire to perpetuate the longstanding tradition of the community band. Note: This text was adapted from text by Jay Stephens on the occasion of the Frostburg Arion Band s 125th Gala Anniversary Concert. 10:40 AM Jason Twigg and Fritz Kessler Jason Twigg and Fritz Kessler are a two-piece old-time string band from Frostburg, Md. These local musicians play classic fiddle tunes, breakdowns and waltzes. Their repertoire consists of tunes from the turn of the 20th century and earlier, focusing on melodic fiddle runs with the guitar added for a driving rhythm. Twigg, playing the fiddle for 10 years, credits Buddy Thomas, Tommy Jarrell and Rhys Jones as major influences on his playing style. Kessler started playing bluegrass banjo but is now also versatile on the guitar and mandolin. Fritz s influences are Norman and Nancy Blake, James Bryan, The Blue Sky Boys and Steve Huber. 11:20 AM Cory and Heather Wharton Cory and Heather Wharton give moving performances that blend bluegrass, country western and traditional folk music in a celebration of the area s unique mountain heritage. After spending time in Johnson City, Tenn., and soaking up the musical influences of that part of Appalachia, the duo has recently returned to Western Maryland. 11

The group brings three-part harmony alive. 1:20 PM Ray Owen A truly versatile performer, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and national recording artist, Ray Owen is an entertainer whose engaging vocal style and infectious blend of good time music and humor continue to captivate audiences across the country. Owen will use his stage time to pay tribute to Pete Seeger. 2:00 PM Michael and Carrie Kline Michael and Carrie Kline of Elkins, W.Va., weave southern mountain stories and folklore with spine-tingling harmonies on voice and guitar. To hear them and be invited to join in on a chorus is to be transported to a country church, a one-room school or mamaw s kitchen. The duo conveys those emotions and connections that really matter, time with family and friends, spiritual times, all wrapped in a patchwork quilt of vivid images. 2:40 PM Brad and Ken Kolodner Ken Kolodner (hammered dulcimer, fiddle and hammered mbira) and his son Brad Kolodner (banjo, banjola, fretless banjo, guitar and fiddle) have been performing together for the last three years and recently released Otter Creek, their first recording of Appalachian and original music. Just two months after the release, Otter Creek became the second-most-played instrumental recording on the international folk charts. 3:20 PM Twang! Formed in 2009, Twang! sings country-western music in the barbershop quartet style. Ranging from old-time favorites to today s radio hits, and including patriotic and religious numbers along with outlandishly funny jokes, banter and novelty numbers (some of them originals), their entertaining shows are appropriate for a wide range of sites, settings and scenarios. Scatton, Pottsville Republican/Herald SOWERS STAGE SATURDAY 4:40 PM Loretta Hummel and Robert Broadwater Local musician Loretta Hummel has been delighting regional audiences for many years. A resident near Frostburg, Hummel is a singer and acoustic songwriter who has recorded and released several music albums. An ordained music minister, she plays guitar and performs various country, gospel and bluegrass music in the tri-state area. Robert Broadwater hails from Lonaconing, Md. He plays traditional-style bluegrass on his fiddle. Hummel and Broadwater will perform her original songs and cover songs. 5:20 PM Sparky and Rhonda Rucker Sparky and Rhonda Rucker perform throughout the United States as well as overseas, singing songs and telling stories from the American folk tradition. Sparky has been performing for more than 40 years and is internationally recognized as a leading folklorist, musician, historian, storyteller and author. He accompanies himself with finger-style picking and bottleneck blues guitar, banjo and spoons. Rhonda is a musician, children s author, storyteller and songwriter. Her blues-style harmonica, piano, old-time banjo and bones add musical versatility to their performances. 15
