1 GROUP 1 Piggy Role Pretend you are Piggy, the outspoken, intellectual outsider. Audience Your audience includes your auntie as well as your family back home in England. example Greeting: Dear Diary, Closing: All my love, Piggy *Explain your line of thinking about the beast. *In your opinion, is there a beast? Why or why not? *How are the kids behaving on the island? How does that make you feel? *Also, identify your innermost fears about living on the island. Think about what scares you the most in light of Jack s ability to hunt and successfully kill a pig.

2 GROUP 2 Ralph Role Pretend you are Ralph, the mildly immature, inexperienced chief. Audience Your audience includes your father as well as the rest of your family back home in England. example Greeting: Dear Diary, Closing: All my love, Ralph *Complain about your duties as chief. *What annoys you? *What is important to you? *Emphasize what you want changed on the island. Also, explain your reasoning for wanting to step down from the position of chief. How might your decision impact others? Will your decision to step down help or hinder the rest of the boys?

3 GROUP 3 Jack Role Audience Format Pretend you are Jack, the proud, somewhat crazed hunter. Your audience includes your family back home in England. You will write a brief 4-5 sentence diary/journal entry (be sure to include the date, greeting, and a closing) detailing your experiences on the island based on Chapters 5 and 6. For example Greeting: Dear Diary, Closing: Sincerely, Jack *Explain your perception of Ralph s abilities as chief. *What does he do well, if anything? *In what areas is he weak? *What do you think about Ralph s rules? *How do you feel about the existence of the beast? *Identify your emotions as you walk away from the assembly (meeting) with your group of boys. Forecast your future plans as an up and coming leader. from chapters 5 and 6.

4 GROUP 4 Simon Role Audience Format Pretend you are Simon, the sympathetic, isolated boy who finds solace in open spaces. Your audience includes your family back home in England. You will write a brief 4-5 sentence diary/journal entry (be sure to include the date, greeting, and a closing) detailing your experiences on the island based on Chapters 5 and 6. For example Greeting: Dear Diary, Closing: Love Always, Simon *Explain why you wanted to go to your place in the middle of the night. *Explain your perceptions of the beast. What is it? *Why might this beast be detrimental to the rest of the boys on the island? *Identify your reasons why Ralph should continue being the chief. *What potential conflicts could arise if Ralph gives up this position? from chapters 5 and 6.
