9 Chapter six Diary: Ralph Boy, it s been quite the day, and admittedly, I m a little angry This morning I woke up to Sam and Eric running down the mountain. Did they tend to the signal fire last night? No. No, they did not. Could we have been rescued. Certainly. I m pretty sure I heard fighter planes above me last night. I didn t want to wake up and check, because I was quite confident the signal fire was going and that if they were truly planes they would see the fire and come and rescue us. Now will we ever know? I don t know. Sam and Eric have been claiming to see the beast Quite absurdity, I say Or at least the beast is just a large, harmless animal. There isn t anything to be afraid of on the island. I think they are overreacting. And besides which, maybe their drama is just created as a way for them to cover up the fact that they were not tending the fire as they should have last night. I ve decided to call a meeting immediately. There are things to take care of. There needs to be serious on this island. If there is actually a beast, we need to find it. And I need to address the issue of tending to the fire, setting up huts, and the like. We need to be serious on the island

The Signal Fire Thesignalfireburnsonthemountain,andlateronthebeach,toattractthenoticeofpassingships thatmightbeabletorescuetheboys.asaresult,thesignalfirebecomesabarometeroftheboys connectiontocivilization.intheearlypartsofthenovel,thefactthattheboysmaintainthefireis asignthattheywanttoberescuedandreturntosociety.whenthefireburnsloworgoesout,we realizethattheboyshavelostsightoftheirdesiretoberescuedandhaveacceptedtheirsavage livesontheisland.thesignalfirethusfunctionsasakindofmeasurementofthestrengthofthe civilizedinstinctremainingontheisland.ironically,attheendofthenovel,afirefinallysummons ashiptotheisland,butnotthesignalfire.instead,itisthefireofsavagery theforestfirejack s gangstartsaspartofhisquesttohuntandkillralph.

RalphandPiggyontheotherhand,wanttotrytogetofftheislandbeforetheybecomelike Jack.TheywanttokeepafiregoingsothattheywilleventuallygetrescuedbyRalph sdad.even thoughtheythinktheyaregoingtogetrescued,theydon ttalkaboutralph sdadbecausenow theyjustwantanyonetorescuethem.beforetheycangetrescuedthough,ithinkjackwillhave killedthem.jackmightbetheonlyonetosurvivebecauseofhishuntingabilities.sobasicallyi predictthatthebookwillhaveahorribleendingandnotturnoutwellforallofthekidsstranded ontheisland.
