Over 50s _Over50sOmnibus_Transcript_Kingston_Tp02 00:00:33:00 Ros Simmonds, I m 57 and I m a hairstylist 00:05:00:00 In general, what does being over 50 mean to you? Being old. Yeah I don t really know. I ve never really thought about it. You don t sort of think about your age. You just carry on as usual and don t really think about the numbers. 00:05:27:00 My name is Pushparnanthan. I am 75 years old and my occupation I m a retired schoolteacher. 00:12:19:00 Live is slowing down. If you re young, you can be active and travel a lot. I used to travel a lot. Every year we went away frequently. As schoolteachers we got holidays, which we used to travel a lot. But now my travel has been restricted, because of poorer health. 00:12:50:00 Denise Wilkinson, 66, and I m retired. 00:19:27:00 Aches and pains. Mobility s not very good as you can see. Trying to lose weight when I can t exercise. I try and get out as much as possible. 00:20:14:00

My names Betty Brockbank. My age - I m 74 and I was a nurse 00:26:59:00 Grandchildren. Certainly at 65 I worked until I was 65. More time to do photography and gardening and things like that. And my bus pass. 00:27:23: _Over50s Omnibus_Transcripts_Ewell_Tp 03 00:37 Name Susan Nelson Age 61 Occupation Retired 05:14 Well it means 51 plus, nothing else 05:26 Do you think it s affected your life in any being over 50 or is the way people treat you any different? No I don t feel any different at all 05:38 Name Winifred Age 79 Occupation Retired 20:28 Id like to be 50 again, well over 50 s ok, its when you get to 70 you start to think oh what s the point, your husband s gone, you re on your own not likely to meet anybody

else, not that you d want to! So 50 s fine, my daughters are 50 both of them, 50 and 51 I had them quickly and they re as happy as anything 21:11 Do you think there are any positives to being your age, over 50? Yeah your more confident, when you re younger you get taken in on different things but when you re over 50 you know a lot more than you knew before you were 50 so you re wiser 21:34 Name Ken Age 52 Occupation Construction manager 29:48 Again it s not something I really think about because I am over 50, there s nothing I can do about it its just aging, natural progression so you just go along 30:10 Name Pearl Age 65 Occupation Part time bookkeeper 35:30 Nothing its just another number, I carry on my life as I want to it doesn t make any difference not at all. 35:47 Name Stephen Age 64 Occupation Retired

41:38 What does being over 50 mean to you and what are your biggest fears your future? I don t know, health is everything in life what ever age you are, so if you ve got your health you re ¾ of the way there. 42:17 Over 50s Omnibus_14347_Kingston_Tp04 00:01:27 Right, my name is Sue and I m 54 and I m a Duty Manager. 00:07:25 I feel like 20. No I don t feel over 50 and I think really if I can just carry on feeling healthy and pretend that I m not over 50 then life should be a lot easier. 00:07:47 Chris Kelly, 60 and on a career break but I m an I.T. Manager normally. 00:14:24 Old age I think, number one. I hadn t thought about the question, I don t think it actually means a lot to me. I mean I ve experience since I took my career break a sense of people thinking I m being farmed out and oh he s an old fuddy duddy now, but I think people over 50 still have a great, have lots of experience and can add value to the market place and it s going, I think for many people they will struggle being over 50, especially with the level of unemployment we have and obviously the youngsters coming through the pipeline eager to get a job and to prove themselves, so. 00:15:13 Janet Bolt, 67, retired.

00:20:43 I suppose I d say it gives you more freedom, I don t know, it s not very nice getting older, no. 00:21:03 My names Ken Brown, I m 55 and I m a solicitor by profession. 00:26:17 Well actually I ve just given up my job, so I actually think that I m just starting, people say oh have you retired and I say no I ve just started. I ve now got a point where I feel confident in myself, it s taken a long time, I m a late starter and I actually feel that after 50 then there s all sorts of things, you ve got that maturity and knowledge and maybe you ve learnt actually what you want to do rather than all the things that you had to do. So it s a new beginning I think. 00:26:53 I m, well my name is Jean Lambert, I m retired and my age, that s a tricky one, I m :33:22 Over 50. Having Grandchildren, being free to do exactly what I want. Not so many worries. Stand up for yourself more, all along that line really. 00:35:57 Jan Man, 70, retired. 00:38:54 Freedom. Cheap travel on the transport systems. It s great. Have time to go to concerts

and theatre things like that in the daytime. 00:39:13 David Evans. Coming up to 70 in two weeks time and I m retired You re nearer the end of your life. Your mortality starts to hit you a certain age when you retire because you know your relatives have passed on your friends have started to pass. Really you start to realise especially at 70 that there s a big difference between 69 and 70. It doesn t sound much but it s the psychological change and you start to think hang on I m moving into my autumn years and one foot in the winter years. It s a bit pessimistic but you start to think it Yes my name is Arlene Dignin I m an administrator and I m Well being over 50 depends on the situation if you re in good health then you re onto a winner if you ve got money your on another winner and if you have a family then you might even have grandchildren or you might have a partner so I think being over 50 especially if you re a woman can be a really good deal because the nagging mother in law has gone, the children have hopefully have flown the nest if you haven t left it too late to start and you actually start thinking you know what I m going to have time for myself now and be an artist so I think over 50 can be good years so long as you re healthy you ve got a bit of money and you have a family you re doing alright _Over50sOmnibus_Transcript_Kingston_Tp05 00:00:48:00

Can I start off by asking for your name, age and occupation? I m a housewife my name is Elaine Turnball. I m :06:19:00 Nothing. Except the body s a bit stiffer. The brain still works. Nothing at all. 00:06:33:00 Can I start off by asking for your name, age and occupation please? Tom Cook. I m 62 and I m an accountant. 00:13:16:00 Wonderful. Heading towards retirement. Having brought the family a good bit of the way up. Having the mortgage paid off. That s the thing and I ll be able to travel later on so now the age I am, I hope to retire in the next few years. Give up work, travel a bit, and write a bit. 00:13:51:00 Can I start off by asking for your name, age and occupation? Tom Stubbs, I m 56. I m a retired volunteer. 00:19:46:00 It means that it s the most contented time of your life. You ve done the things you wanted to do when you were younger. You ve got still just about enough health and energy to enjoy yourself. Its actually, if you can afford it, a very good age to retire. I don t know how I ll feel when I m 60 but the 50 s have been pretty good really. 00:20:15:00 Can I start off by asking for your name, age and occupation? My name is Veronica Suckling. I m 70 and I m sort of semi-retired.

00:26:26:00 I ve never found it a big deal actually. I suppose if you re healthy and lead an active lifestyle and you ve got a lot of interests and things I don t think age is a major item really. I think a lot of it is in the mind. 00:26:52:00 Can I start off by asking for your name, age and occupation? Duncan Borrowman, 52 and I m a Political Advisor. 00:35:40:00 No different to being over 40 really. 00:35:50:00 Could you explain a little bit more please? It doesn t make any difference at all. I do much the same things as I ve done a long time. Yeah. 00:36:01:00 Can I start off by asking for your name, age and occupation? William Baron, 56 and I m voluntary worker. 00:43:18:00 Forgetting to count. I don t know. I think you still enjoy life. I think you see things differently. You have a different perspective. Not being too fussed about career and that, seen all that. Didn t really work anyway so doing something else. I think its really just enjoying life, that s the key. Not just for yourself but your sense of purpose and for other people as well. 00:43:58:00 Over 50s Omnibus_14347_Manchester_25/06/12_Tp06

0.30. Well retired, aged 71, that s where you re supposed to say no, you re not!? My name? Anne Flood. Mrs. Anne Flood Well I don t know. I just think it s the people, the friends you meet in your life when you get older. Over 60s, when I joined it was the over 55 club. I walked in and I said well, where is she? My best friend is 92 and she still wants to go on holiday but we can t do holidays anymore because of his medical condition. It s just the nice people. That s what s most important in your life really. It s nothing to do with money. You re never in debt. It s the people as you get older, such lovely people Yes my name is Steve Cook. I m 60 years old and I m director of Peace Parade International. 11:43 Not being under 50, it s not really an issue for me, I just don t think about it. You can actually ask what does 60 mean to me, because I was 60 this year! It doesn t mean a great deal in terms of having a problem with it I m just me as I always was. I don t actually consider age, I leave that down to other people to whether they want to have a go at me to use age, to have a go at me about it, in fun obviously, but to me it means nothing at all, I m just who I always was 12:22. Janet Hadfield, over 60, pensioner 18:49

Aches and pains and not much fun! Wearing glasses, I ve just got to wear. No, I wouldn t recommend it being over 50 at all! 19:11 Liz Grey, 61, secretary. 24:46 Getting old, yeah getting old isn t it yeah, what does it mean? I don t really know. You re as young as you feel and the scary thing is when you re walking up the street and I see this person in the mirror and I think who s that? and it s me! But that s not me, because it s not me inside, but it is me outside and it s not very nice getting old. Sometimes I cant do things that I used to do which frustrates me, but you just have to accept it, get on with it, do what you can when you can I do a lot of walking, I like to walk and I could do 12 / 15 miles without even looking, now 10 miles and I m thinking, I ve had enough now and if I go for a week, spent a week walking 10 miles every day I know that I ve done it, whereas 10 years ago I wouldn t bat an eyelid, that s all part of getting old isn t it. Just have to keep doing it! Keep doing it, don t stop. 25:57 I retired, Marie Brian, 65 35:50 Do you know something its come round that quick that you don t really think about it I know I didn t because after 21 the years just seem to fly and when you re working as well you re that busy that you don t have time to think about the years. I didn t feel any different, I mean even now I don t feel any different even though I m a pensioner I get up and do the same things and go out everyday, yes I m older but I don t feel any different for it

36:27 My name s Michael Fielding, retired and 53 41:09 Over 50 means to me less angst of youth really if I hadn t done anything by my age, then I m not going to, I can lead a more relaxed way of life really there are a lot of positive things but the downside is getting older and health issues 41:31 Paul, 55, Labourer 47:10 I don t like but there s not a lot you can do about it you ve just got to plod on 47:23 How is it different? You know you re getting older don t you; your bones start going more eventually, need to keep yourself a fit as you can it s all you can do really 47:41 Over 50s Omnibus_14347_Manchester_Tp07 01:13:04 Can I start off by asking your name, age, and occupation? Sonia Mollino, Catering assistant. 04:41:07 Uh, a bit wiser. My life experience.

05:17:05 Can I just start off by asking your name, age, and occupation please? I m Anne Carlan, I m 73, and I m retired now. 11:20:06 Over 50? I felt alright at 50. Not at :37:13 Do you think there are any disadvantages to being over 50? I think there is because you don t get the same choice in clothes and things that you did when you re that bit younger. They cater more for younger people. And then as you steadily get older you find there's less choice in anything. Very little choice. Nowadays you don t get treated with the respect I treated my elders kind of thing. 12:14:05 Can I start off by asking your name, age, and occupation? Right, I'm Winifred Seary. I'm 61 and I'm retired. 17:20:06 In general, what does being over 50 mean to you? Freedom. The kids are gone; we can do what we like basically! 17:34:22 Can I get your name, age, and occupation, please? I'm 55, my name is Mike Bradley, and I'm a clinical psychologist. 22:26:19 Just generally, what does it mean to you to be over 50? Depressing. 22:42:09 Can you please tell me your name, age, and occupation please? Yeah, my names Sue Castille, I'm 60, and I work as sales in a shop.

29:15:22 Generally, what does being over 50 mean to you? Nothing. Doesn t give me any advantages anyway, except if I'm running for the bus the driver might stop. More so than he did when I was :34:20 Can I just start with your name, age, and occupation please? Retired, Tom Iddich is my name. I'm 75 going on :50:24 In general what does being over 50 mean to you? Freedom. The kids are grown up you get an immense sense of freedom and offloading responsibility you can now think I can do what I want to do. And what money I've got is fore me to go and enjoy myself and I start having holidays I've never had before. 35:16:16 Can I start off by asking for your name, age, and occupation? My names John White, I'm 56 and I'm the landlord of a pub. 39:29:18 In general what does being over 50 mean to you? I don t know you tend to think about life a bit more, and what s going to happen to you in the future. And you don t get embarrassed that s the one thing I've found is you don t care about anything anymore. 39:48:11 Can I start by asking your name, age, and occupation? My name is Alison Clayburn, I'm 51 years old. And I'm a civil servant. 44:50:16

It s awful I hate it. It means I'm getting old its horrible, you cant get nice clothes and when you put them on you don t look the same in them and so, no, id rather be younger I suppose just look forward to retirement. 45:16:04 Can I start by asking your name, age, and occupation please? Elaine Hosey, I'm 65 and I'm a part time secretary. 49:05:03 I don t particularly like it but I can relax a bit more. Haven t got as much responsibility because I've paid things off. The mortgage is paid off and everything. 49:23:19 Over 50s Omnibus_14347_Manchester_25/06/12_Tp03 00:33:16 Can I start by asking your name, age, and occupation? My name is Peter Kirkpatrick, my age is 64, and my occupation is a trainer. 05:02:06 Being over 50? You go to the toilet more! You have lots of good memories, over 50 s good. I'm 65 now. 05:27:11 Can I start off by asking your name, age, and occupation? Judy Miller, I'm 60, and I'm a legal secretary. 10:08:16 I don t believe it for a start. When did that happen?

I don t know I think I'm a bit more relaxed, a bit more laid back about things. I think you realise that what you think is important when you're younger isn t really important. It isn t. It s family. You know, as long as your family are all right, that s the main thing. 10:33:05 Can I start with your name, age, and occupation please? John McGoldrick, security advisor at a hospital. I'm age 54 14:57:22 It means good god how do I get to here, because the last time I bat an eyelid its uncanny how I got here. Yeah but you feel good, and you keep looking forward don t you. 15:11:20
