3 Chapter 21 of The Kenyons of Cattaraugus County, NY Mathew S. Kinyon Brother of Madison S. Kinyon Richard L. Kenyon 32 Almond Tree Lane, Irvine, CA Jan 28, 2013 Of the five of the nine sons of John S. Kinyon and Susan Sheldon that can be identified, Mathew S. Kinyon is the one about whom we know the least. He was born about 1823 in DeRuyter, Madison Co, NY. He died between 1876 (when he and wife Nancy sold land in Doniphan Co, KS), and 1880 when Nancy Kenyon was listed as widowed in the census for White Cloud, Doniphan Co, KS. Neither Matthew nor Nancy was found in Doniphan Co cemetery records. We have no idea what happened to his children. Matthew switched the spelling of his surname from Kinyon to Kenyon after moving away from his brothers. It is likely that Matthew moved with his parents to Cattaraugus Co, NY by The first documented appearance of Mathew is when he was enumerated in the 1850 census living in Humphrey, Cattaraugus Co, NY. Matthew and his brother Nelson S. Kinyon were living in the home of James Kinyon, who is likely to be an uncle (see Chapter 2, James Kinyon). About 1854, both Mathew and his brother Nelson moved west to Newton Township, Jasper County, Iowa. Mathew bought land there on Oct 26, He sold this land to his brother Nelson in Mathew left Iowa, and moved west to Kansas. About 1860, he married his first wife, whose name is unknown. She was deceased by They had one child: 1. Matthew S. Kenyon [Jr], b about 1861 in KS. Died after Matthew s second marriage was about 1864 to Nancy (maiden name unknown). She was born about 1850 in North Carolina. She had been previously married to a Mr. Stanley by whom she had a daughter, Rebecca Stanley, born about 1864 in KS, and died after There were three children from the marriage of Matthew and Nancy: 2. Martha A. Kenyon, b about 1867 in KS. Died after Mary E. Kenyon, b about 1868 in MO. Died after Ellen E. Kenyon, b about Apr 1870, MO. Died after Matthew S. Kinyon Page 1
4 Questions, Corrections and Additions I welcome questions, corrections and additions. I can be contacted at the or postal address at the top of page 1. Acknowledgement Thanks to Library district #1, Troy, KS, for searching their files and finding the 1876 land sale deed. Sources The identification of Mathew s parents is explained in Chapter 20, Identifying M. S. Kinyon s Brothers. Mathew is found in the census as follows: 1850 NY, Cattaraugus Co, Humphrey, p. 114, Matthew Kinyon, rooming with James Kinyon 1856 Iowa State Census, Jasper Co, Newton, p 354, family 296, Matthew Kinyon. Age 28, 2 yrs in state, laborer Not found 1865 KS State Census, Shawnee Co, Auburn, online at ancestry.com, family of Mathew S. Kenyon, widowed MO, Andrew Co, Lincoln, p. 220B, family of Matthew S. Kenyon KS, Doniphan Co, White Cloud, p. 498C, family of Matthew Kenyon. The Matthew Kinyon/Kenyon of NY and IA was identified as the Matthew Kenyon of MO and KS by virtue of being illiterate and born in NY. Matthew s purchase and sale of land in Iowa is from: Miles White to Matthew S. Kinyon, Oct 26, 1854, IA, Jasper Co IA deeds 5:372. E! of SE " of Sect. 36, T81 N R19. Mathew S. Kinyon to Silvester S. Kenyon, Jun 18, 1855, Jasper Co Deeds 5:364. This is the same land Mathew purchased from Miles White in The deed has an affidavit by his brother M. S. Kinyon written vertically in the left margin, and dated March 3, 1892, only a few months before he died: "... the name appearing Kenyon sometimes is simply a clerical error and should always be Kinyon." In 1876 Matthew and Nancy Kenyon sell land in Doniphan Co, KS, according to the files of Library Distric5t #, Troy, KS. The children of Matthew were identified from the census. Daughter Rebecca is listed as Rebecca Kenyon in the 1865 KS census, but is more precisely identified as Rebecca Stanley in the 1880 Federal census. Matthew Kinyon is the only one of the five known sons of John S. Kinyon for which there is absolutely nothing in the family history collection from the estate of 21 Matthew S. Kinyon Page 2
5 Madison S. Kinyon. After about 1860, when Matthew left Jasper Co, IA, contact with him would have been lost. Matthew was illiterate, so it is very unlikely that any letters were exchanged. Matthew is identified as a son of John S. Kinyon in chapter 2, Identifying M. S. Kinyon s brothers. Aside from this, our information comes almost entirely from the census and a few deeds: 1850 NY Cattaraugus Co, Humphrey page 113, line 9. Mathew and Nelson Kinyon are living next to the family of James Kinyon (chapter 10) who is possibly Madison S. Kinyon s uncle (see Chapter 10, James Kinyon). Kinyon, Mathew, age 27, born in NY, Farmer, illiterate Kinyon, Nelson. Age 21, born in NY, Farmer 1854 Deed: Miles White to Matthew S. Kinyon, Oct 26, 1854, IA, Jasper Co IA deeds 5:372. E! of SE " of Sect. 36, T81 N R19.The following is from IA, Jasper Deeds, 5:372, FHL film NY Cattaraugus Co. Matthew Kinyon not listed 1855 IA Mathew S. Kinyon sold land in Jasper Co to his brother Silvester S. Kinyon on June 18, This is the same land Mathew purchased from Miles White in The deed has the very interesting feature of a affidavit by M. S. Kinyon written vertically in the left margin, and dated March 3, 1892, only a few months before he died on June 27. He gets the last word on the Kenyon/Kinyon controversy: "... the name appearing Kenyon sometimes is simply a clerical error and should always be Kinyon." The following is from IA, Jasper, Deeds 5:364 Mathew S. Kenyon to Silvester S. Kenyon, rec'd for recording Jun 19th AD 1835 [sic], FHL film I Mathew S. Kenyon Jasper County State of Iowa in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars in hand paid by Silvester S. Kenyon of Jasper County, State of Iowa do hereby sell and convey unto the said Silvester S. Kenyon the following described premises situated in the county of Jasper...the east half of the south east quarter of section no thirty six (36) in township no eighty one (81) north of range no nineteen (19) and west of the 3rd principal meridian, containing eighty (80) acres...in witness therefor I have hereunto set my hand and seal this eighteenth day of June AD 1835 [sic]. Mathew S. Kinyon The following was written in the left margin of the deed in very small print; some words were illegible: added for Record Mar 3rd 1892 at 4 O'clock J Cunningham Recorder State of Iowa Jasper County. I M. S. Kinyon being duly sworn depose and say that I personally knew Mathew S. Kenyon who on June 18th 1855 conveyed the E 1/2 SE 1/4 sec 36 Tp 81 Rg 19 to Silvester S. Kinyon and knew that he was a single man at said date. Also that S.S. Kenyon was the husband [of] Tenta Ann Kenyon to whom he on Feby 1862 conveyed the above described. Also that S. S. Kinyon was one and the same person as Silvester S. Kinyon who was acquired land on June Also the name appearing Kenyon sometimes is simply a clerical error and should always be Kinyon.
