Identifying the Parents of Mary Doherty, Interred in Calvary Cemetery, Tacoma, Washington, Sometimes we have no name; sometimes we have the wrong name; and sometimes there are too many individuals with the same name. The latter characterizes Irish research. Only by researching all individuals with the same name for both Mary and her father, Michael, and eliminating those who did not fit the evidence, was the correct Mary matched with the correct parents they were the last ancestors standing. In Calvary Cemetery in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington, a cemetery marker rests on the grave of Mary Doherty. The stone carver incised the stone with Mary Doherty, Our Beloved Mother, May 7, 1898 Dec 29, Adjacent is the cemetery marker of Daniel H. Doherty, born 1896, died Who were Mary s parents? And, where and when was Mary born? MARY DOHERTY Mary Doherty died 29 December According to her obituary (Attachment 1), her surviving siblings were Patrick Coyne of Seattle, John Coyne of Ireland and Nora Carney of New York. Her age was 53 at the time of her death (b. 1896, calculated.) Her husband, Daniel Doherty, had died the previous year. Mary was born in Ireland. 3 Mary Coyne and Daniel Doherty married in Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana, on 23 October On the license, Mary identified her parents as Mike Coyne and Mary (nee Kerrigan) Coyne. Mary was born in County Galway. She was 22 years old, placing her birth between 23 October 1895 and 23 October In 1920 the couple and their daughter, Mary, resided in Clancy, Montana, where Daniel was a silver miner. 5 Between 1927 and 1930, Daniel, Mary and their now four children moved from Montana to Seattle, Washington. 2 The obituary identified the siblings of Mary as Patrick (living in the US), John (living in Ireland) and Nora, married name Carney (living in New York.) 9 Birth order of the siblings is unknown. PATRICK COYNE, MARY S BROTHER Patrick N. Coyne was born approximately 1895 and died in Seattle, Washington, on 4 August His parents were Michael Coyne and Mary Kearga. 10 Patrick s obituary, a simple death listing, yields no additional clues. 11 The known presence of Patrick in the state of Washington in 1949 (year of Mary s death), the logical birth year, the exact match of the father s name, the exact match of the mother s given name and a close phonetic match of the mother s surname, indicates that Patrick N. Coyne, born approximately1895, was Mary s older brother. NORA COYNE, MARY S SISTER Nora Coyne married Patrick Carney on 26 October 1926 in the borough of Manhattan, New York City, New York. 12 In 1940, Nora and Patrick and their family were living in Manhattan. Nora was 38 years old (birth year by calculation: 1902.) 13 The marriage of Nora Coyne to a Carney, the location of the marriage consistent with the known presence of Nora in New York in 1949 as stated in Mary s obituary, and the logical birth year indicates that the Nora (Coyne) Carney, born approximately1902, was Mary s younger sister. The family structure appears like this: Mike Coyne m. Mary Kerrigan Patrick, b Mary, b m. Daniel Doherty John, b.?? Nora, b m. Patrick Carney John s birth year and his order in the family are unknown. RESEARCH IN IRELAND: MICHAEL COYNE FAMILY There are 116 Michael Coynes in County Galway in the 1911 census. Patrick s father, if married at age 25 and if Patrick were the first child, would have been born in 1870 or would be approximately 41 years old in If Michael was 60 at the time of Nora s birth and if Nora were the youngest child, then Michael would have been born in 1840 and been 71 at the time of the 1911 census. Therefore, the reasonable range of age of Michael Coyne, is between 41 and 71 at the time of the 1911 census. 3 Michael Coynes between the ages of 25 and 80 years of age comprised the first pool of candidates investigated. Each of these remaining Michaels was inspected for a wife named Mary and children named Patrick (b. c. 1895), Mary (b. c. 1896), Nora (b. c. 1902), and a John, birth order not known. 14 Only one family in Galway fit this familial composition. (See Table 1 comparing known information from the United States & Ireland.) Historically, the 1901 Irish census is considered less accurate than the 1911, particularly people s ages. Most people aged more than ten years between 1901 and It is certainly true for the adults in the Coyne family. 16 Cloghbrack and Clonbur are the more contemporary spellings and will be used unless specifically related to the 1901 census.

Michael Coyne and his wife, Mary, lived with Michael s parents, Martin and Mary, in Middle Cloghbrack, Clonbur, County Galway, a rural area of Ireland in 1901 and Bridget, Michael s sister, appeared in the 1901 census only. 17 In 1911 and at age 16, Mary could read and write and spoke both Irish and English. Her parents could not read or write but they both spoke Irish and English. Mary s grandparents could not read or write, and spoke only Irish. 18 Reading, writing and speaking English were considered important skills that opened up greater opportunities within Ireland. 19 With a match of children, approximate birth years and birth order, and a match of parent s names with no other family with this alignment, it is likely that this Michael Coyne and his wife, Mary of Middle Clogbrack are Mary s parents, and that their daughter, Mary, is Mary Coyne Doherty who is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Tacoma, Washington. However, this conclusion is valid only if Mary Coyne of Middle Clogbrack emigrated from this household in 1912 or IMMIGRATION OF THREE MARY COYNES Mary (nee Coyne) Doherty immigrated in 1912 or A search was conducted for Mary Coyne who emigrated approximately /- 2 years at age 17 or 18 from Ireland into New York, Boston or Philadelphia. Fifty-five Mary Coynes (various spellings were used) formed the original set of which 45 were eliminated because they were outside the birth range or not from Galway. In 1911, Mary, Bridget s mother, declares she has given birth to two children, one of whom is still living. MARY COYNE #1 & MARY COYNE #2 The clerk recording names on the passenger manifest aboard the SS Baltic crossed out the entry for Mary Coyne #2. In a review of the other pages of the same manifest, the names of all other residents of Clonbur, County Galway, including Patrick Coyne, Mary Drexler, Amy Corbett, Michael Duffy and Patrick Lyden, were also crossed out. Each of these Clonbur residents, including Mary Coyne, appeared on the passenger manifest of the SS Mauretania, which sailed the day before. 22 It is likely that Mary Coyne #2 is the same person as Mary Coyne #1. Many characteristics recorded on the two passenger manifests are the same or similar. Residents of Clonbur ticketed to sail on the SS Baltic all changed their tickets to sail instead on the SS Mauretania, including Mary. Kate/K. Kerrigan paid for Mary s passage in both records. Kate Kerrigan was recorded as a cousin on the SS Mauretania manifest. Kerrigan is the birth name of Mary Coyne s mother. The Townland of birth, Clonbur, was the same in both records. Patrick Coyne who sailed with Mary on the SS Mauretania identified his father as Andy Coyne and is not Mary s brother.

7 The SS Baltic passenger manifest recorded Mary s father s name as Mil (smudged and incomplete) Coyne and gave the location of residence of Cloghbrack, Clonbur. The SS Mauretania record disagreed with both of these entries. Mary #1 s last residence and name of relative was listed as do for the same as the above, referencing Anne Coyne. Anne Coyne s residence was recorded as Ballyveane in Clonbur and her mother (sic) as Andy Coyne. 23 The recorder s use of the do was a likely an expedient recording error. Mary Coyne #1 and Mary Coyne #2 were likely the same person. MARY COYNE #3 Mary Coyne #3 disembarked from the SS Merion on 18 May 1914, a year inconsistent with the known immigration information of Mary (nee Coyne) Doherty. 24 In addition, Mary #3 is two-years older. A likely candidate more closely aligned with known information about Mary Coyne #3 was recorded in the family of Michael and Julia Coyne who lived in Upper Cloghbrack in This Mary Coyne is slightly older than Mary (Coyne) Doherty. In 1911, the family composition of Mary #3 was: Michael Coyne, age 50 Julia Coyne, wife, age 30 Mary Coyne, daughter, age 17 Ellen Coyne, daughter, age 15 Bridget Coyne, daughter age 13 John Coyne, son, age 13 Nora Coyne, daughter, age 4 Sarah Coyne, daughter, age 1 Maggie Coyne, daughter, age 2 25 While this family is tantalizingly close to the same familial make up as Mary (nee Coyne) Doherty with siblings which include a John and a younger sister, Nora, the absence of a Patrick born in 1895 and a wife named Mary indicates that this is not the family of Mary (Coyne) Doherty. However, the large age gap in age between Michael and Julia, and the wide gap in ages between son John and daughter Nora (9 years gap) implies that Julia is a second marriage for Michael. This conclusion is borne out in an investigation of the 1901 census. In 1901, the family of Mary #3 resided in Upper Cloughbrack, Cloonbur, County Galway; Michael Coyne, head of family, age 40 Margaret Coyne, wife, age 38 Bridget Coyne, daughter, age 6 Mary Coyne, daughter, age 4 Ellen Coyne, daughter, age blank Bridget Coyne, Mother in law, age The tantalizingly close Coyne family of Upper Cloghbrack now seems quite remote. 8 is not Mary, Nora s age is five years younger than Nora (Coyne) Carney, and there is no Patrick in the family although he would have been 6 or 7 at the time of this enumeration. Mary Coyne #3 is not Mary (nee Coyne) Doherty. The conclusion is that Mary Coyne #1/#2 was likely Mary Coyne Doherty. The immigration date was consistent with United States records. The birth year was consistent with United States records. The names of the parents were the same. Ireland county of birth was the same and No evidence, which cannot be justified, conflicts with what is known of Mary (Coyne) Doherty, wife of Daniel Doherty. Mary #1/#2 was Mary Coyne Doherty and was the daughter of Michael and Mary Doherty of Middle Cloghbrack. Mary Coyne of Middle Cloghbrack emigrated from Ireland in June of 1913 with five Clonbur residents, all approximately her own age. 27 CONCLUSION In our search for Mary Coyne, we studied the family in the United States, finding the evidence needed to identify the siblings of Mary Coyne. Knowing the family structure, we narrowed the numbers of possible Michael Coynes and eliminated all but one family. We then identified possible Mary Coynes from the immigration databases and eliminated all but one immigrant who was consistent with the evidence gathered of the Irish and the United States family. The parents of Mary Coyne, who married Daniel Doherty in Silver Bow County, Montana, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Tacoma, Washington, were Michael and Mary (Kerrigan) Coyne of Middle Cloghbrack, Clonbur, County Galway, Ireland. Other questions were answered in the course of the investigation: Mary Coyne was likely born in Middle Cloghbrack. Mary Coyne was likely born on 7 May Mary Coyne immigrated in 7 June 1913 aboard the SS Mauretania with numerous other Clonbur residents after deciding not to sail aboard the SS Baltic for reasons unknown. Mary Coyne s residence at time of emigration was Middle Cloghbrack, Clonbur, County Galway, Ireland. Michael s parents and Mary s paternal grandparents were Martin and Mary ( --?--) Coyne. Three documents would further ground this proof argument and resolve remaining ambiguity: Mary (nee Coyne) Doherty s death certificate, her naturalization papers (if extant) and the birth record of Mary Coyne, 7 May 1896 in Clonbur, County Galway, Ireland. The process of elimination resulted in identification of the correct Coyne family and the correct immigrant from among many.
