3 Chapter 6 of The Kenyons of Cattaraugus County NY Remington and Thankful (Barber) Kinyon and their Kinyon/Kenyon ancestors Richard L. Kenyon rlkenyon@cox.net 32 Almond Tree Ln, Irvine CA August 15, 2009 Introduction Remington and Thankful (Barber) Kinyon were the parents of Merritt Kenyon, the subject of Chapter 5, Merritt and Lovisa Kenyon Remington Kinyon was born in Rhode Island in 1771, where he married Thankful Barber. They moved to Washington County circa 1795 and lived there the rest of their lives. Remington and Thankful raised nine children. Remington s father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather were all named John Kinyon. The first of these came from England and made his first documented appearance in Rhode Island in Remington s surname is spelled Kinyon in the original records, and this is not an error it was once the most common spelling. Genealogists generally standardize the spelling to Kenyon, to avoid confusion due to variant spellings. The family of Remington and Thankful (Barber) Kinyon Remington was born July 27, 1771 in Exeter, Washington Co, RI. He died at age 82 on April 21, 1854 in Granville, Washington Co, NY. He married Thankful Barber about Thankful was born about 1775 in Rhode Island, and died at about age 84 on June 6, 1859, in Granville, Washington Co, RI. There is a family tradition that she is descended from Lady Thankful and Lord Merritt. The family moved to Hartford, Washington Co, New York circa By 1810, they had moved to the town of Granville in the same County, where they remained. It appears that Remington's brothers Gardner, John, Zebulon and Freeman also moved to Washington Co at about the same time, as they are found in the town of Argyle in the 1800 census. Remington Kenyon was one of the original members of the Baptist Church of North Hebron, located not far from Remington s residence in Granville. Remington and Thankful are buried in the Tanner Cemetery in Granville. 6 Remington Kenyon Page 1

Nancy Named in Remington s will, but it seems likely that she was a granddaughter, the orphan of Remington s son Barber and wife Dency, and that Nancy was raised by Remington and Thankful. Kenyon Ancestors of Remington Kinyon FIRST GENERATION John Kenyon: John Kenyon was born about 1657 in England. His parents are unknown. His first documented appearance in Rhode Island is in a 1687 Kingstown tax record. He married a daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Sherman) Mumford whose given name is unknown. He had a farm in Kingstown on land that he received from his father-in-law Thomas Mumford. He made out his will June 12, 1732, and died shortly afterward in Westerly, Washington Co, RI. His will was proved June 26, The 1935 genealogy American Kenyons by Howard Kenyon erroneously claimed that John married Anna Mumford and was the son of a James Kenyon who was born in 1633 in England and who married May 2, 1654, Ester (daughter of John Smith). This has been conclusively proven wrong by recent research. See Chapter 24 for complete information. The children of John Kenyon are named in his will: John: b 1682, James: b , Enoch, Joseph, Samuel, David b 1693, Jonathan b Remington Kenyon Page 4

7 SECOND GENERATION John Kenyon Born at an unknown date. He died before June 1, 1747, in Charleston, Washington Co, Rhode Island. He was married July 1704 to Elizabeth Remington, daughter of John and Abigail (Richmond) Remington, born 1685 in Richmond, RI, and died July Children: John, Thomas, Sylvester, George, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Samuel, Abigail, and Benedict. THIRD GENERATION John Kenyon Born November 21, Died March 1747, in Charleston, Washington Co, RI. He married March 23, 1726/7 in South Kingston Mary Gardiner, born November 30, 1707, daughter of Nathaniel and Mary Gardiner. Children: Penelope, John, Remington, Mary, Dorcas, Hannah, Nathaniel, and Elizabeth. FOURTH GENERATION John Kenyon Born September 29, Died June 20, 1823 in Exeter, Washington Co, RI. 1 st marriage to Freelove Reynolds June 8, 1755 in Exeter. 2 nd marriage to Lydia Eanos. 3 rd marriage to Welthian Ann Mumford who was born April 20, 1749, and died February 11, She and her husband are buried in Exeter Historical Cemetery #68. Children by 1 st wife Freelove: Gardner, Mercy, and John. Children by 2 nd wife Lydia: Zebulon, Freelove, Freeman, Remington, and Lewis. Children by 3 rd wife Welthian: Joel, Haworth, Amos, Job Reynolds, Reynolds, Lydia, and Joseph Greene. 8 Sources Sources for John Kenyon #1: See Chapter 24, The First Kenyons in America Descendants of the first John Kenyon: Two genealogies trace the line of descent from the first John Kinyon in the U.S. down to Remington Kenyon. They are: American Kenyons by Howard Kenyon, Tuttle, VT, This is still the most comprehensive work on the early Kenyons, but does not reflect the research that has taken place since Ancestors and Descendants of William Browning Greene and Mary Hoxie Lewis and Allied Families by William E. Wright, Gateway Press, The book includes many Kenyons, including the line of descent to Remington. It is up-to-date, and well-documented. In the following paragraphs, these sources are abbreviated Kenyon and Wright, and we give the author s ID number for the person. This information has been supplemented by other sources, cited below. John Kenyon 2 nd generation: Wright KE4, Kenyon #11. Wife Elizabeth s parents are family RE2 in Wright. The birth date and place in Wright which Wright qualified as possibly was taken from Kenyon 1935 and was shown by Wood 2004 to not be possible. John Kenyon 3 rd generation: Wright KE10, Kenyon #111. Wife Mary Gardiner is included in Wright in Family GA6. John Kenyon 4 th Generation: Wright KE27, Kenyon #1111. Remington Kenyon 5 th Generation: Wright: son of KE27, Kenyon # Kenyon 1935 names Remington as a son of John Kenyon #1111, but has no information about him after he left RI. Wright gives the birth and death information. Wright obtained the death date for Remington, and dates for Thankful from The New England Shermans, Roy V. Sherman, p Sherman obtained his information from a Violette Magoon, a descendant of Remington s daughter Susanna who married Asa Strait. Violette was born in 1903 and living in Seattle, WA when she furnished the information to Sherman. However, the most complete genealogy for Remington is: Notes and data in Regard to Remington Kenyon of Granville, Washington County, NY, and Philip Sherman of Portsmouth, RI, anonymous typescript, undated, copy at Rhode Island Historical Society, call number V. F. Biog K375r. This is hereinafter abbreviated RIHS typescript. The sources on which the typescript is based include the will of Remington Kinyon, cemetery records, census records, and family records. In addition to a detailed account of Remington, it lists his descendants via Susanna and Asa Strait, down to Andre Dale Briggs, born January 17, 1963 in Marceline, MO. It is likely that Sherman s informant got her information from the same research that led to this typescript. Remington s ancestors are listed back to Philip Sherman, based on American Kenyons and the erroneous information therein that John Kenyon #11 married Anna Mumford. The family story of Thankful being descended from Lord Merritt is from the RIHS typescript. 6 Remington Kenyon Page 6

9 The birth of Remington is recorded in Births Marriages Deaths, Town of Exeter RI, p His death date is from the cemetery inscription. His wife s dates are from the cemetery inscription. The date of marriage is estimated from the date of birth of their first child. The date of moving to NY is based on the date and place of birth of Susanna (1793 RI) and the appearance of Remington in Washington Co in the 1800 census. Remington s being an original member of the Baptist Church in North Hebron, is from History of Washington County, New York, 1878, Chapter on Hebron Churches, p Remington and Thankful s cemetery data is from Barbara Anderson of the Washington Co, NY, Historical Society, and is based on her reading of the surviving stones in May 1992, supplemented by two previous records: 1) Mildred Mattison, Granville, Washington Co, NY Cemeteries, undated, FHL book A1 #33, and 2) Anon, Miscellaneous Washington County Cemeteries, FHL , #2. The same Cemetery has also been called the Farmer s Yard Cemetery and the Brown Cemetery. Tanner Cemetery is reached by driving 3.7 miles on Route 149 from the intersection with Route 22. Turn south on Searls Road and drive 0.8 miles to Taylor Hill Road. Turn right and drive 0.7 miles to Brown s Lane. The stone wall around the cemetery can be seen at this point up behind a brick house and barn. Children of Remington and Thankful Kenyon The children are based on the will of Remington Kinyon, Washington County, NY, Will Book F, p , signed May 7, 1850, proved July 31, Except for Susanna, the place of birth is the residence of their parents reported in the census, which was Queensbury in 1800 and Granville 1810 through 1850, both in Washington Co, NY. Susanna: Named in will: my daughter Susan the wife of Asa Straight. Census: 1850 OH, Medina Co, Litchfield, p. 443, family of Asa Strait. The gravestones were read and photographed by Margaret Gunn and posted on findagrave.com. Dates and children are from Theodore Lazell, Henry Straight of Portsmouth Rhode Island, copy at FHL. Lazell s death year of 1870 for Susan has been corrected to 1869 based on a clear photo of her gravestone inscription. Biographical details and death of Jane are from Pioneer History of Medina County, N. B. Northrop, 1861, p. 162 and 164. Barber: Named in will: my son Barber Kinyon now deceased. Also names Barber s son Henry Kinyon. Children s names and wife s given name from RIHS typescript. Barber s dates are from cemetery data posted by Marylin Kenyon on findagrave.com, citing Peggy Jenks, descendant of Henry and Wata (Briggs) Rice. Wife present in 1830, but missing in 1840 census NY, Washington Co, Granville p Levi s death date and cemetery is given in the RIHS typescript, but apparently the stone has not survived. Lydia: Named in will: my daughter Lydia the wife of Hosea Straight. They moved to Dodge Co, WI, per RIHS typescript. The additional details are from Theodore Lazell, Henry Straight of Portsmouth Rhode Island, copy at FHL. Although it states that Hosea died in Ashippun Twp., Dodge Co, WI, and his estate was probated there, the family is last found in the 1850 census in NY Wayne Co, Williamson, p Birth years from age in this census. Note that Lydia s brother Remington also lived in Williamson, Wayne Co. 6 Remington Kenyon Page 7

10 Thankful: Named in will: my daughter Thankful the wife of Philander Waller. Dates from census: 1850 NY, Washington Co, Hartford, p. 254; 1860 same location p.113; 1870 same location p. 343, indexed as Muller; 1880 same location, p 268B, living with son Merritt and family. Remington: Named in will as my son Remington Kinyon. Dates from gravestone inscriptions (Ridge Chapel Cemetery Records, Wayne Co, NY, Genweb). Birth year from gravestone; agrees with 1850 census. Appears with his family in the census as follows (location always Williamson, Wayne Co, NY): 1850 p. 142; 1860 p. 0 (indexed as Kayon); 1870 p. 541 (Indexed as Kingon); 1880 p 502C (indexed as Rumington Kenyon). His son Merrit appears with his family in the same place in 1900, p. 10A. Remington s obituary: Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, Nov 3, 1891: Born Sep 10, 1808 [sic]; died last Saturday at home of son Merrit. Cemetery record for Remington and wife: Ridge Chapel Cemetery, Williamson, Wayne Co, NY, online at Wayne Co GenWeb. Joel: Named in will: my son Joel is now dead leaving children two of whom now survive. Birth date from age in 1830 census, NY, Washington Co, Granville, p Wife s name Julia and son Joel from RIHS typescript. Birth year of Julia and Joel from census, 1850 NY, Washington Co, Granville p. 315, indexed as Kingon. Merritt: Named in will as my son Merritt. See the separate chapter Merritt and Lovisa (Fuller) Kenyon. Isaac: Named in will: my son Isaac Kinyon. Wife s name from RIHS manuscript and census. Birth dates from Census: 1850 NY, Washington Co, Granville, p. 317, living with wife in the residence of his parents, indexed as Kingon. Isaac s death date and cemetery from RIHS typescript and Tanner Cemetery inscriptions. Eleanor/Ellen: Named in will: my daughter Ellen, wife of Erastus Clark. Birth years from census, 1850 NY, Washington Co, Granville, p Death dates from Tanner cemetery inscriptions. Nancy: Named in will as my daughter Nancy. No husband is mentioned. The RIHS typescript gives Nancy s husband as Erastus Clark, but this is contradicted by the will and by the census, both of which show that Erastus Clark married Nancy s sister Eleanor. A Nancy, dau. of Barber is listed as a grandchild in the RIHS typescript. Two sons of Barber are also listed: Levi (died Feb 8, 1840) and Henry. Barber Kinyon last appears in the 1840 census living next to or with his parents. Barber has a son age years old (Henry) and a daughter age years (Nancy) and no wife. His wife apparently died sometime after the 1830 census. Barber himself died prior to the 1850 will, leaving Nancy an orphan. Given these facts, it would appear that Nancy was raised by Remington and Thankful after the death of her mother, or at least after Barber died. Remington and Thankful might have considered Barber s daughter Nancy as their daughter, or they could have adopted her. Nancy was not found in the 1850 census for Washington County, but this is inconclusive. Appendix 1 6 Remington Kenyon Page 8
